"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (John 1:1-2)

Throughout this passage in the book of John, he is talking to us about who Jesus is. One of his names in Scripture is the Word so John is letting us know that Jesus didn't just start existing in a manger in Bethlehem, He has existed all along. That's because Jesus is God! He wasn't created by the Father. He has always been the three persons of the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Spirit have always existed in perfect unity. They're eternally united and eternally distinct. When John says the Word was with God and the Word was God because he shows us the unity and the distinction. It can be challenging to try to understand the Trinity, but verses like this help us to see a little bit more about God and the more we learn about Him, the more we'll see that He's where the joy is!
