On this episode, KJ flies solo in remembering Harlan Ellison, writer of controversial science fiction, but also writer on Star Trek, Season 1 Episode 28; City on the Edge of Forever. Dr. McCoy is accidentally injected with a serum that causes paranoia, and beams himself to a nearby planet. Kirk, Spock and an away team chase after him, but not before he jumps through "The Guardian of Forever" a portal into earth history.
Immediately the away party finds themselves stranded without an Enterprise or a Federation of Planets. Kirk and Spock follow McCoy through the portal into Depression Era Earth where Kirk falls in love with a social worker (Joan Collins) who has to die to restore the future. A devastated Kirk along with a restored McCoy and Spock return through the portal to find things as they knew them.
This episode is one of the works that Harlan Ellison was most known for. A single episode that speaks of time travel, chaos theory, and quantum dimensions at a time where these were fledgling and new theories on the scientific horizon.
