In this excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in studio by Khea and Cynthia Pollard, the mother-daughter owner duo of Cafe X: By Any Beans Necessary. Both Khea and Cynthia live their lives with an emphasis on the importance of giving back to the community. Their passion is driven by their pride in their identity as black women and the legacy of changemakers in their community who came before them.
Cafe X: By Any Beans Necessary is so much more than a coffee shop. It was designed as a co-operative to give others the opportunity to share in the ownership of the business. This particular co-op focuses on pushing boundaries and filling gaps in the community. Particularly they have a focus on providing opportunities for youth in the community. They frequently work with young people in their business as well as serve as mentors. As a business, they recognize the passion in the young people of today and their refusal to settle while pushing boundaries.
An excellent episode on community and improvement with Khea and Cynthia Pollard. Here are some other takeaways from the interview:
- The history of Cafe X both from Khea and Cynthia's separate and unique lived experience
- The reason behind the co-op and the goals they have for their work within the community
- What drives Khea and Cynthia in their mission
- The important and benefits of the non profit model for creating change
- The answers to the Rapid Fire questions!
A thought provoking interview from excellent gap minders who are constantly working to improve the lives of everyone in the community. Thank you, Khea and Cynthia, for your contributions in San Diego, and for joining us on The Gap Minders.
