I think it bears mentioning that this film is incredibly faithful to the Medieval poem. We tend to think of the Medieval period as having been very "puritanical" and this is just a projection of our own society. Medieval literature is full of scandle and mystical representations as well as Christian overlays. One Cannot forget this comes from the time where Christianity is trying to replace the pagan aboriginal religions of the British Isles. The pagan religions and ideas didn't just fold up and leave town willingly. There was an age when those two cultures fought, mingled, bred, and finally bore a blended offspring. This poem is an example of that union.
