Welcome to Episode 57 of Building My Legacy.

The ninth of our 10-part series on resilience, this podcast looks at how easy it is – in times of uncertainty and stress – to become a complaining employee. In fact, research shows that most people complain once a minute during a typical conversation. It can be something as simple as complaining about a long line in the grocery store, but it’s a habit many of us find hard to break.

Our goal in this series with resilience expert Kate Fitzsimons has been to help you feel a little bit calmer, a little bit more in control when things aren’t going as you planned. That’s so important today as we face the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To help you avoid becoming a pessimistic, negative person who complains too much and begins to drain the team’s energy and creativity, Kate applies her 3Rs of resilience – recognize, reflect and redirect. She shows you how to overcome those ANTS – automatic negative thoughts – so that you can be the person you want to be on the job and in your personal life as you build your legacy.

So if you want to know:

– The importance of separating circumstances from your own negative thoughts
– How to redirect your thoughts to the opposite when you’re tempted to complain
– About focusing on what you want and like – rather than what’s going wrong
– How to “hack” your brain so you think about the solution rather than the problem

About Kate Fitzsimons

Named one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence in 2016, Kate Fitzsimons is an international speaker, certified life coach & director of the Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation – a charity established in honor of her sister Nicole who died in an accident in Thailand in 2012.

Determined to save others from a similar tragic fate, Kate left her corporate career in 2013 to dedicate herself to educating young people about the importance of travel safety. Through her eye-opening presentation at high schools, Kate drives home to students the devastating consequences of risk-taking overseas – a message so powerful that she is now supported by the Australian government and major corporations.

Inspired to help others thrive through adversity, Kate’s presentations to students around the world and her popular podcast show, ”Okay. Now What?” help high school and college students develop “response-ability” – the ability to choose their response to any situation based on their perspective of it. Kate’s passion is to provide inspiration and practical advice to help you overcome even the most traumatic experiences. She knows if she can do it, anyone can.
