A cedar tree in front of the Brazos County courthouse since 1867...whose roots literally run back to at least 1841...is coming down.

County commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a recommendation from county judge Duane Peters after learning of additional damage to the tree during storms the last two weeks.

The county's historical commission will decide what happens to the tree.

The people in charge of the county's landscaping have collected more than 20 seedlings to plant in front of the courthouse and at other county owned property.
