Pope Francis has made peacemaking a central part of his ministry. Blessed are we who answer his call by making peace a priority—even when achieving it seems illusive or a downright pipedream. The example of a suffering Christ tells us we always have to try.

Yesterday’s observance of the International Day of Peace is a good place to start your personal peace project.

Remember that peace begins within—through prayer and meditation. I realize that takes commitment. But when we are grounded in God’s grace, we are capable of sharing a very great blessing. What comes next? If we want peace to take root, we have to practice reconciliation and forgiveness—over and over again.

The practice of peace can be hard at times. But our task is urgent. There is no alternative that heals, binds, or mends people back together again the way peacemaking does. Don’t worry about failing now and then. Just resolve to be a peacemaker and let God’s grace do the rest. Begin a peace project within your own family. Or with a friend or neighbor. The more we practice peacemaking, the more we will come to realize how important our mission is.

My friend, ultimately peace will come when we take the time to welcome Christ into our lives. I remember Paul’s words to the Colossians 3:15 and feel encouraged: “And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.”

Prayer for 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace
You walked on water and
calmed the storm with Your word
and after Your resurrection
You appeared to Your doubting,
fearful disciples with the greeting:
“Peace be with You!”

Pour forth that same peace
into my heart that I might learn
how to forgive and heal;
into my home so I might live
in harmony with my family
that together we might face
obstacles and challenges
confident You are with me.

May your peace, Lord, which
the world cannot give
overflow from my heart and home
to others that all might know
the glory to which you call us.

Amen.
