An analysis by an UN-backed initiative that monitors food security says more than 350,000 people are living in famine conditions in Ethiopia.
The IPC’s analysis was conducted in northern Tigray, where war broke out in November, and neighbouring regions of Amhara and Afar between May and June this year.
The reports indicated that it is the highest number of people in IPC Phase Five since the 2011 famine in Somalia.
It added that the severe crisis results from the cascading effects of conflict, including population displacements, movement restrictions, limited humanitarian access, loss of harvest and livelihood assets, and dysfunctional or non-existent markets."
It said that as of May that 5.5 million people were facing high levels of acute food insecurity.
