Jimmy Barrett and Shara Fryer take you through the stories that matter on the morning of 07/08/2019, including: A CNN poll released last week found that 57 percent of Americans said that the government should not enact a program, such as Medicare for All, that would completely eliminate private health insurance, compared to 37 percent of those who said that they should scrap private health insurance, and six percent of those polled who had no opinion. Further, only 31 percent of Democrats said that a national program should completely replace health insurance, while 48 percent, or nearly a majority of Democrats, said that a national health insurance program should not completely replace insurance. A third of Americans say they’ve cut spending in the last year, and that percentage is about the same no matter the demographic, according to the Invest in You Spending Survey released on Monday. Reasons for spending less ranged from a loss of household income and new debt to fear of recession, job loss or large medical bills from an unexpected illness or injury. Twice as many Democrats as Republicans said they’d cut their spending due to anxiety over the economy. The fears come as the U.S. broke its record for time without an economic recession. We’re into the 121st consecutive month of gross domestic product (GDP) growth since the 2008 recession. 2020 Dems face prospect of being cut from debates. More than half of the Democratic presidential hopefuls who participated in the last round of debates could find themselves on the sidelines for the next forum. Contenders will have to meet tougher requirements to participate in the Fall debates.
