What is the point of marriage in this increasingly throw away society where we feel encouraged to constantly chase the ideal? The answer is that it is tiring and ultimately unsatisfying to do so . The key to individual happiness is living in a happy relationship in a close functioning community. Humans left to their own devices naturally tend to chaos and therefore need guidance which is why in this society of infinite choice and freedom and forced equality of outcome instead of increased happiness we have worsening depression and suicide especially in females. Therefore society needs to encourage a mechanism of stable commited relationships but also have some measure of when a relationship is beyond salvation as being in an unhappy relationship is more toxic than living alone despite loneliness itself being severely harmful to mental and physical health. Nobody is perfect but if you can work with them then stick with them as that is the only way you will build something together. Not everyone wants a relationship or to get married or to have children and those people who are perhaps married to their careers deserve the freedom to follow their choices rather than being forced by societal expectations into relationships they will be no good at. As always it is not equality of outcome that is important but equality of opportunity so that people can follow what they are suited for.
