MAN’S TRADITIONS

How did man-made holidays
become a part of God's ways?
What does Christ being raised
from the dead
have in common with bunnies
and Easter eggs?

Beautiful colored eggs we hide,
Some with hidden treats inside!
If Jesus walked the earth today,
What would He do? What would He say?

Are we firmly locked in man's traditions?
Who made these a part of the Christian religion?
Is this a tare sown among the wheat?
Has the church been careful about what she eats?

Do we judge the things we hear and see,
or do we accept things as the way it should be?
Do we imitate what we've seen and heard
without thoroughly examining it with God's word?

A seed of tradition planted in our minds,
Grows deeper and deeper over time.
Do we know the history of what we believe?
Do we truly understand the things we've received?

"My mother and father are both Democrats;
So am I and that's the end of that!"
"My family has done this for generations!
Why must you start a confrontation?"

Just because it's been done for years,
Just because it sounds good to our ears,
Just because it's a beautiful sight,
Doesn't make it perfect and right!

"What would Jesus do?" we say.
What a popular, cute cliché!
"Jesus is Lord of my life,
After my parents, job, friends, and wife!"

God or man? Which do you choose?
Which would you rather keep than lose?
If something we like offends the Lord,
Do we cut it off with our spiritual sword?
The offering of a true sacrifice
requires the death of something nice;
the thing we consider number one,
the thing we consider exciting and fun.

It could be just about anything;
your money, your time, or ability to sing.
Your child, shopping, your beautiful home;
God wants the things in your comfort zone.

"Greater love has no man than to lay
down his life for his Friend."
This includes the tradition of men
and anything that hinders or offends.

"Happy Easter! Merry Christmas!'
These holiday greetings are instilled in us.
We were taught to say them years ago,
Most never question the status quo.

Can you handle what people think about you
when you choose to do what God wants
you to do?
Not just anybody off the streets,
but those with whom we sleep and eat?

Those with whom we work and play;
The folk we interact with everyday.
It's a challenging thing for most to do;
This walk is reserved for the remnant few.
