Becoming – Why Deion Sanders Left Jackson State | Dr. Umar Johnson Talks Deion Sanders Leaving the HBCU

In this episode of Becoming with Angelina Watkins, she highlights the interview with Dr. Umar Johnson on the Breakfast Club and his opinion on Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State to coach at the University of Colorado.

Dr. Umar Johnson was very clear and passionate about his thoughts on Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State. In his opinion, Deion abused, used and exploited the HBCU for his own selfish wants. Deion Sanders had an opportunity to start a movement that could revive and save many of the HBCUs that are struggling to stay open due to funding.

It is no question that Deion Sanders made a difference at Jackson State. He help the football team achieve and accomplish what they have never in history been able to accomplish. He opened the door for Jackson State to be a desirable collage for football recruits. He guided the school to an undefeated season for the 1st time in history. They won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships. But was there more for him to do for the HBCUs collectively?

As Dr. Umar Johnson points out, Deion Sanders could have started a movement that would draw other NFL greats to coach and other celebrities to pull their financial resources together to create a funding source for the HBCUs to thrive. Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State was selfish and he sold out for money.

Was it Deion Sanders duty to be the catalyst and spearhead a movement to save the HBCUs? Or was the HBCU a stepping stone for a much bigger plan that God is leading him to?

Listen and them comment below your thoughts? Was he wrong for leaving Jackson State to pursue his dreams?
