Trauma Informed, Recognizing Emotionally Unhealthy Behaviors Due to Trauma

In this episode of Becoming with Angelina Watkins, she gets into the topic of being trauma informed. She discusses:
•What is trauma?
•The importance of recognizing trauma
•What trauma residue looks like in your adulthood

It is important for those in the space of coaching, consulting, mentoring, ministry and other change agent roles to be trauma informed. Their behaviors are not always a result of being lazy, resistant, fear, or being hardheaded. There are people who genuinely want a better life, but they are struggling mentally and emotionally. The best they can do is take it day by day.

We have to recognize when people are pushing through the pain. They are pressing through and still showing up despite the distress in their lives. And they are chipping away at the things they need to do to be successful, but because they are not moving as fast as you think they should and executing the way you want we think they are full of excuses. We are not seeing there is a bigger issue at hand.

What it seems to be is not always what it is. Behaviors displayed mask a much more deeper issue, that at times, the person displaying the behavior may not even understand. The emotional root cause of the behavior must be uncovered so the cycle can be broken. The problem is that those in the change agent space don’t recognize we are dealing with trauma residue and/or they don’t know how to address it. And many times they can’t see your trauma because of their own trauma they haven’t dealt with.

Bottomline, people who serve people need to become more trauma informed. First address your past so you can then show up and help the people you serve.
