Today is 15 Sept, Tuesday. My name is Rishika Sharma. I am a student of Postgraduate diploma in sustainability management at IIFM Bhopal. Today in our podcast series, a step towards a sustainable future we are going to talk about the significance of PES that is payment for ecosystem services in community led restoration practices.

Local communities of farmers and tribal groups play a critical and significant role in conserving local agro-biodiversity in and around localities of their natural habitat, and those are the main people that are directly affected by climate change through desertification and land degradation. In a true sense, these green businesses have immense potential to conserve and restore the local ecosystem through various set activities that will ultimately heal our earth. These types of conservation activities, involved local communities need our support.

Without any incentives and extra benefits, local communities of farmers and tribals have a limited number of resources to invest their time and money required to restore the ecosystem completely. To overcome these berries, there is an urgent and emerging need in India to develop a strategic roadmap and financial framework for the “Payment/Incentives for Ecosystem Services” that will support these communities to do their conservation activities. Payment for Ecosystem services is an innovative approach that combined packages/schemes provided by the Government, private organization and sometimes by the public to support these local communities or farmers for the adoption of sustainable practices in their working area (agriculture, agroforestry, fisheries, water conservation, beekeeping, etc.). PES is only applicable to some particular practices that preserve, support, and benefit all the “services” provided by the environment, such as clean water, air, biodiversity, healthy soil, etc. This initiative will also motivate these local communities to engage actively in more restoration activities. Through PES, we can achieve mutually beneficial environmental and economic targets in a more sustainable manner.

That is the need of the hour to develop a national-level policy and framework on PES for the sustainable use of our natural resources. The government needs to strengthen the agriculture and allied sector through strong capacity building of local communities for the betterment of the environment and the planet. This will ultimately need money. PES is an extremely powerful and strong strategy that has the higher-level potential to generate more revenue at a bigger level if applied systematically at the country level. The time is now to take some serious action because it might be our last call to do something that matters.

I hope you like the idea of pes. We will talk about the some other innovative topic next week. Till then goodbye and take care of yourself and our planet.
