Welcome back to the second episode of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology Podcast.

In this episode, we speak with Miss Rashmi Mathew, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She talked about her day to day life as a surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, her view on patient's education, and how does she keep productive. Miss Mathew is also passionate about medical education. As a medical educator, she involves in variety of teaching and educating next-generation medical/non-medical healthcare professions. She talked about what is important to herself being a medical educator, why connecting with students is important, her proudest moment as a medical educator, and her advice to other medical educators and medical students.

Miss Rashmi Mathew:

Miss Rashmi Mathew qualified with distinction from Guy’s Kings and St Thomas’ school of Medicine in 2003. She completed her 2-year fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2013 and joined the Glaucoma Consultant Faculty in 2013.

Miss Rashmi Mathew is also the Deputy Director for Undergraduate Education and New Consultant and Resident Leadership Training Lead at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Medical Education, Institute of Health Sciences Education, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University College London.

Rashmi has a keen interest in Glaucoma Patient Education and has been running Education events since 2011.

She has won many awards for her Education work:

- Finalist for the Leadership category at the Moorfields Stars awards, Apr 2019.
- Winner of Schwartz Community Award, 2019
- Winner of Aylward QIPP award, Moorfields Eye Hospital, 2017
- Winner of Audience Choice award, for my work on flipped classroom learning, UCLP education conference, 2017
- Winner of Excellence in Medical Education award (team category), UCL, 2016.
- Winner at UCL TiME Conference, Glaucoma Patient as Teacher Symposium, 2016.
- Winner of Academy of Medical Education award for my work of eye drop administration education for glaucoma patients, 2014.

Rashmi has a number of research interests, which include wound healing following glaucoma surgery, effect of cataract surgery on trabeculectomy surgery, utilization of big data in medical education, patient and public involvement in the medical curriculum. She is serves on the council for the Ophthalmology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit and the Medical Women’s Federation.

Mr Yuan Gao (host):
Yuan Gao is a postgraduate student studying ophthalmology at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He and other students from UCL Institute of Ophthalmology founded the first student-lead ophthalmology society, the UCL Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences Society in 2020. He graduated from optometry school in 2020. He initiated the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology podcast in March 2021. He is passionate about advanced practice in optometry, eye care transformation, and medical/optometry education. He believes a stronger bridge must be built between eye care professions. It will take the eye care service into the next level which will benefit billions of patients across the UK.
