The Stranger by Albert Camus is a very interesting book that worth a read. The book begins with flashback of Meursault's mother's death. Meursault think of it without much of emotion, the only thing in his life that's being changed is preparing for the funeral. A man Monsieur Perez who had loved his mother so much helps carry her to the bury site.
The day after the funeral, Meursault meet up with a beautiful young secretary from his company named Marie Cardona. They have slept together before, so this time will not be an exception. Meursault will agrees to marry her if she wishes not because he loves her, but because nothing really matters to him.
Raymond, Meursault's neighbor brings him and Marie to the beach to visit Raymond's friend Masson. Near the beach the three men fight the group of Arabs who came for the revenge of Raymond's girlfriend who got beat up by him. The Arabs ran off and the men return to Masson's cottage. Meursault returns to the beach with Raymond's gun and shot the Arab. Meursault is arrested and put into trial. During his trial it is Marie's testimony that nailed the case of him being monstrous. Meursault is convicted of murder and sentenced to public execution by guillotine.
The ending of the story is very surprising for me because the character's reaction is not what I should expect from a man who is about to die. Although his action is thoughtless and inconsiderable, but I admire his last action before his death- hoping that the audience cheer for his death. He is not afraid of dying, but rather relieve to be out of this world and ready to began a new life somewhere else, maybe with God.
I recommend this book to everyone who find this book worth of reading. (less)
