Self driving cars in las vegas

Like driving with your grandfather, which is the entire point.

Since May 2018, Lyft and Aptiv have partnered to give self-driving rides across the Las Vegas strip randomly to those requesting a pickup through the ride share app. At any time, 30 of the white and black cars can be dispatched, pulling up with two people in the front seats acting as safety monitor and backup driver. We finally got one at 7:30 am this morning — a white BMW, that picked us up at the MGM Grand for a quick drive to the Mandalay Bay.

The car, while self-driving on public roads like the Las Vegas Strip, is driven manually on hotel properties. That meant as we swung out of the back ride share lot from the MGM Grand, and into a left turn on to South Las Vegas Blvd the car was in manual mode, with the driver's hands at 10 and 2, and her feet on the pedals.

• Alabama radio station...whoops

One Alabama radio station got a little ahead of itself late Monday night.

The Crimson Tide were defeated handily by Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game, but WJOX-94.5 FM in Birmingham ran a pre-recorded commercial from a Hoover-based Academy Sports + Outdoors store advertising Alabama national championship gear.


“What a great win over Clemson for the Crimson Tide. The sixth title in 10 years. Truly amazing. Title number seven for Nick Saban,” the commercial said. “We’re excited to celebrate this incredible victory with you.”


• Tuna sells for 3 million
The owner of a Japanese sushi restaurant chain on Saturday set a record by paying more than $3 million for a bluefin tuna in the year's first auction at Tokyo's new fish market, exceeding his own record price of 2013.

Kiyoshi Kimura, who owns the Sushizanmai chain, paid 333.6 million yen ($3.1 million) for the 278-kg (613-lb) fish caught off the coast of northern Japan's Aomori prefecture, or double what he had paid six years ago.

"The tuna looks so tasty and very fresh, but I think I did too much," Kimura told reporters outside the market later.
