B.Subcategory: German-Style Schwarzbier
(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
Schwarzbier ("shvahrts-beer"), is simply German for black beer. It doesn't mean that it's necessarily heavy or light in body, although most examples tend to be lighter. Unlike Porters or Stouts and other dark beers, they are not overly bitter with the burnt and heavily roasted malt characteristics that these styles tend to depend on. Instead, hops are used to achieve a good portion of the bitterness. Smooth on the palate, soul lifting, and refreshing with a dry finish, Schwartzbiers make a great alternative for the winter months, especially when you're looking for a lighter beer, but one with depth of color and a bittersweet taste that might bring to mind coffee, cocoa, or licorice.

-Color – Very dark brown to black, with a pale-colored head.

-Clarity: Beer color may be too dark to perceive. When clarity is perceivable, chill haze should not be present

-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium malt aroma displays a mild roasted malt character. Malt sweetness is low to medium, and displays a mild roasted malt character without bitterness.

-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.

-Perceived Bitterness: Low to Medium

-Body: Low to Medium-Low

-ABV: 3.8%-4.9%

-Glassware: Pilsener Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass
