We talk one of the most interesting characters in modern Olympic history Rulon Gardner. He is the subject of a fascinating Olympic Channel documentary “Rulon Gardner Won't Die.”

We see that he had a tough childhood as one of nine children with a loving family but he grew up on a farm working hard day in and day out.


As a young man he survived a number of close call accidents that might have killed him. But no matter how many times he got knocked down he always got up and did his best to work hard for his family. He attended the University of Nebraska where he would establish himself as a top notch college wrestler.


He was a long shot to make the 2000 Olympic team but he did win a slot and that led him to sudden stardom. The documentary retells the story of one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history, when Gardner defeated Russian legend Aleksandr Karelin to win a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling in the 2000 games in Sydney.


But there far more to the story and “Rulon Gardner Won't Die,” shows what sudden stardom can do both good and bad. But Gardner never gives up and to this day he remains an upbeat person.
