Senegal's Eastern Promise - No Longer Naive w/Ibrahim Mustapha

19 JAN 2022 · This week I was delighted to be joined by Ibrahim Mustapha author of "No Longer Naive - African Football's Growing Impact at the World Cup" on the show. We focused on the remarkable story of Senegal's run at the 2002 World Cup, which included the memorable opening game victory of France. We spoke about the journey of the time, harmful stereotypes about African players and when an African team will go to the next stage of the competition. We also spoke a little about the African Cup of Nations, which is currently exciting fans at the moment. If you are further interested in the subject, definitely check out Ibrahim's book, which is well worth reading. And again thanks to him for sparing the time to join the podcast.

29 DEC 2021 · Back again for a second year! We gathered the regular crew for the second annual Christmas Quiz, as Rob, Lion, Colbyn and Scottish Alex battled it out to win the prized Christmas gnome. Alex found his most difficult brain teasers, with questions such as the ones below answered: - In 2005, a sunday league match between Peterborough North End and Royal Mail AYL was abandoned, as the referee left the field. What caused the ref to go? - Which Political leader did Diego Maradona famously have a tattoo of on his left leg? - 1970’s Zaire dead ball specialist Mafuila Mavuba had a strange ritual before taking a free kick - what was it? Thank you to everybody who listened in the past year, and we look forward to hopefully entertaining you in 2022!

Seán McCabe - World football's first Climate Justice Officer

16 AUG 2021 · An exciting and thought provoking conversation for you on our newest podcast. In January this year Bohemian FC in Ireland made news around the world when they appointed Seán McCabe as the world's first climate justice officer at a football club. Having worked with climate issues for close to a decade, the partnership with the fan owned club with the aim to incorporate more climate focused policies into the club's plans. In a conversation that had the failed super league in mind, we talked about what it means for a community focused club to take the lead on this issue, the banter which followed his appointment, and Seán's hopes for what football can do to tackle the coming climate crisis. A fascinating conversation which tackled everything from the decline of trade union support to what football club's can do in their communities. We really enjoyed covering this topic with Seán and hope you do too. Film Club - United Passions Review - The worst movie ever made?

15 JUL 2021 · In a lighter episode, we sat down with the guys from the Field of Screens pod to discuss the infamous FIFA propaganda film, United Passions. Recorded on the Monday of the ill fated SuperLeague attempt, we looked for some beauty in the story of a few men, who's only dream was that the whole world would play football by the same rules and regulations. Seriously. We discussed what exactly they were trying to achieve with this project, how Tim Roth got Sepp Blatter's walk down and whether commercial deals are in fact the most exciting aspect of the beautiful game. On this journey there were laughs aplenty along with a lot of pain as we tried to understand this ridiculous film. If you have enjoyed any of our shows remember to leave us an iTunes review or share the podcast on social media.
