Carolyn Mussio is an teacher and school-based facilitator in the London, Ontario area. She has developed a special curiosity around how children learn mathematics and has turned to, among other people, Dr. Daniel Ansari to fuel some of that curiosity. She has some very poignant things to say about how the Centre for the Science of Learning might impact other educators in the field who look to research for more than just "the answers."
Dr. Barabara Fenesi's passion is rooted in understanding how the entire human organism (both the brain and the body) plays a role in student success. She draws on work from fields of psychology, education, health, neuroscience and kinesiology to identify intervention strategies that can promote cognitive function and mental health in typically developing children and youth, and in those facing academic challenges (e.g., students with ADHD).
Dr. Fenesi's work combines both laboratory and classroom research to translate basic science into applied settings. She uses a range of techniques including cognitive and behavioural testing, and neuroimaging to identify strategies that help students better focus their attention and consequently perform better academically.
Dr. Perry Klein works in the area of cognition and instruction, teaching courses on the psychology of learning, teaching and intervention for diverse students, including students with exceptionalities.
Dr. Klein's research focuses on the psychology of writing instruction. The questions that I investigate include: How can students use writing as a tool for learning about content area subjects? How can we teach writing effectively? How can we support and intervene with struggling writers and prevent writing difficulties?
Dr. Emma Duerden is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education and a supervisor for graduate students in the School and Applied Child Psychology program. Her research program focuses on the impact of early adversity on cognitive ability in infants and school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder or who are born very preterm.
The Centre for the Science of Learning officially opened on October 4, 2019. Dr. Daniel Willingham (University of Virginia) was invited to give the keynote address. In his talk, Dr. Willingham speaks about the dynamic intersection between science, research and education practice.
