As we continue to branch out into the different nooks of the sports video production world, I was incredibly excited to learn more about this one in particular: Motion Design.  In my opinion, if want to make any production look larger than life, incredible motion graphics can take it there. From SportsCenter to the NBA Finals, Philipp Bichsel is undoubtedly one of the top talents out there when it comes to motion design in the sports broadcast space. If you take one look at his body of work it’s clear that Philipp is on another level. And he has the accolades to back it up, with awards under his belt for his work on the NBA Finals, USA Soccer, and ESPN Monday Night Football graphics packages.  Our conversation was valuable in both professional and life advice. 12 MAY 2020 · Avalon Koenig is a content creator who specializes in run-and-gun style videos.  Despite getting into the sports video production world with hardly any experience and very little guidance, she was able to grow her skills rapidly through hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. The grind she’s put in is indicative of her passion, which jumps out in this interview. Avalon is an artist, who is in this craft because video is her medium of choice. After starting out as the sole video person for the entire athletic department at the University of San Diego, she moved on to the creative agency Fresh Tape Media. Here she’s had the opportunity to create content for some of the biggest events in sports, including the Super Bowl, College Football Playoffs, MLB All-Star Games, and Pro Bowl Riding World Championships.  In today’s episode Avalon shared with us her career journey. She’s had quite the ride, from her early days making GoPro videos of her rowing team to nearly getting stomped on by a bull at the PBR World Finals. 5 MAY 2020 · Today’s guest is content creator Josh Lavallee. Josh has groomed himself into the industry primarily as a freelance sports photographer over the last 8 years.  During that span he’s worked with the MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS, NASCAR and dozens of NCAA schools. Josh provides images of game action for social media and public relation releases, for teams such as the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, and Anaheim Ducks.  After working for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a contractor for all of spring training, he was offered a full time job with their creative staff at the start of this season.In today’s episode Josh dives into how his career in the sports production world got started. John currently works as a Broadcast Producer & Editor at Crimson Tide Productions and has over 15 years of experience in video production and marketing combined. John also works as a Technical Director & Director for live-venue productions at Alabama, working on content for Football, Men's & Women's Basketball, Baseball, and Softball. He is a producer, editor & videographer for game highlights, intro videos, recruiting videos and student athlete features. In today’s episode John speaks all about his sports video production journey, as well as sharing many useful tips and strategies he has learned along the way. John takes us through his role in Alabama and shares how he overcomes his struggles that fall in his path. John’s the executive producer of the online Emmy award winning web series “Pride On Ice”, and shares his stories from his experience filming and traveling with the Golden Gophers Hockey team. This episode goes deep into the world of video editing and post production workflow. He walked us step-by-step through several different types of productions he works on and how he turn around an edit efficiently and effectively.

21 APR 2020 · Today’s guest, like most of us, is a hyphen in the industry. Logan Beerman does work both as a freelance replay operator as well as a creative shooter and editor.  One of Logan’s recurring gigs is with the US Soccer Federation, where he’s had the privilege of traveling the world, including to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.  While being embedded with the US Women’s National Team during their World Cup run is the biggest highlight of his career so far, Logan is caught in a crossroads between creative production and live broadcast production. He’s drawn to the team aspect of a live broadcast and the feeling as “your adrenaline gets going just like it would before you play a big game.” In addition to his freelance gigs, he recently completed his first passion project with his production company, Bazooka Entertainment.By using what was available to him in college, he now has had a very successful career and explains how he chose his career path, along with the struggles that came with it. In this episode, Logan speaks about the learning opportunities that led him to where he is today.  A theme throughout this episode is to always keep working at getting better in every aspect of life, but also focusing on what you're good at while working towards a career.  Logan definitely takes an athlete’s approach to sports video production, and offers great insight for other sports creatives who grew up competing in the games they loved.Show Notes

14 APR 2020 · Today’s guest is the incredibly hard working and tenacious on-air talent personality, Camryn Irwin. Irwin has worked with multiple networks including Pac-12 Networks, Amazon Prime, and ESPN. Camryn is a former professional volleyball player who now tours with AVP Beach Volleyball as one of their broadcast hosts for their professional events.  From volleyball to basketball to robotics, she has become an expert in every event that she covers. In our conversation today, we looked at what goes into preparing for all the different events and types of productions she works on.  I also picked her brain about what crews can do to help talent such as herself excel in their roles.  For anyone aspiring to be on-camera one day, this episode lays out example after example for how to succeed in the field, and if you’re like me and are more likely to be in the production truck, I was sure to pull some helpful tips out of her for us as well. 7 APR 2020 · We are joined today by editor and creator, Scott Horvitz, from the new-age media company Overtime. Scott is a young professional with a variety of experience and incredible knack for creativity. After working with some high tech futuristic 360-degree Intel Technology at IU Athletics, Scott landed positions with the Saints and Pelicans, then The U before making his way to the Big Apple to join Overtime.  His path to this point is filled with great lessons for anyone just starting out or trying to make it in the competitive field of sports media.  We talked creative process, some of the people he draws inspiration from, and what he’s taken from each step in his career.  With both of us being editors, we got a little deep at times into techniques and organization, so if you edit your own videos at all, there are some great hacks in here!  Scott clearly has a passion for what he does and the creative ways to utilize technology, as is apparent in the content he puts out. He also does an amazing job at showcasing his variety of work in his showreels, so we went into his process for that, as well some other specific pieces he’s created.  Though he’s only been at Overtime a short time, we got to discuss a lot of what the company is working on currently, what their focus is, and what he’s cutting specifically.Click here for show notes

31 MAR 2020 · Today’s guest is Emmy Award Winning Content Creator Devin Dismang. Devin was formerly with the Golden State Warriors during their historic string of success from 2016-2019 as the Lead Coordinating Producer.  His rise to that position looked very different from most in that role, as he cut his teeth in the sports industry working on the game operations side. As with most successful people though, as he saw entertainment shifting from on court to on screen, he adapted and began learning new skills. 23 MAR 2020 · Our next guest on the show is NFL Network Producer Krystal Nungaray.  Krystal and I found our career callings together while in a high school news program called CHSTV. Unlike me though, she already knew then exactly where she wanted to work professionally: the NFL.
