(4:09) - Rejection or betrayal as a coping mechanism. - Finding middle ground in a dysfunctional family. - I think that there is validity to saying that a certain level of dysfunction isn't healthy for me. So I can associate with you right now. I don't choose to talk to you right now, I'm going to be taking a break from this relationship for a while. I actually believe that's really appropriate. If there's someone in your family who's such a severe alcoholic, or such a radical drug addict, that every single thing they do is self destructive to the level that you can't handle it. And it's affecting your mental and emotional well being or that of your children. You're definitely in the right to say I just can't handle this right now. Really, truly, it is not a problem to be self protective, or to protect one's own family unit.
