    26 JAN 2023 · We’re back with another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps and Major League Soccer chat! The Whitecaps preseason is in full flow and the Spanish part of it has now wrapped up with a couple of games under their belt against good quality European opposition. We look at the two matches and performances, talk about the continuing transfer rumours, and chat with head coach Vanni Sartini about the team’s time in Spain, the Tai Baribo and Salif Sane transfer rumours, and the ‘Caps Leagues Cup draw. We have two feature interviews for you this episode. First up is 2022 draft pick Simon Becher, who recently signed his first MLS deal with the club. We chat about his year with WFC2, his goalscoring MLS debut, signing his first pro deal, and his hopes for the season ahead. We also chat with this year’s first round draft pick J.C. Ngando about his journey to Vancouver and hear from the Whitecaps’ Julian Gressel about his US national team call-up. All of this plus Fatt Father features in this episode’s Wavelength, we continue paying tribute to the legend that was Terry Hall, along with the recently passed Jay Briscoe and Anton Walkes, we find out if Simon Becher fancies a chocolate digestive, and take another trip in the 13th Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival.

  • Episode 544 – The AFTN Soccer Show (It Ain’t What You Do, It’s The Way That You Do It)

    19 JAN 2023 · We’re back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show as we chat Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver FC, Major League Soccer, and the Canadian Premier League. The Whitecaps are in Spain and getting set for the first of what is now going to be two preseason matches in Espana against European opposition. We look ahead to those games and chat about the new man in camp, Senegal international centre back, Salif Sane. Is there a real chance he could sign or is this just a win-win situation for both club and player? Would he need to be a DP if he did? And what about those injury concerns? We also look at some of the news coming out of Montreal as Kei Kamara looks to move on and they look to move on Kamal Miller. Could either or both end up in Vancouver? One man that was in Vancouver this past week was MLS Commissioner Don Garber. But why?! Turning our attention to the Canadian Premier league, we bring you a quick 2022 season in review, as we sum up each club’s year in one to three words, look at the demise of FC Edmonton and ahead to some future expansion plans, including a third team here in BC. This year sees Vancouver FC take to the pitch for their inaugural season. We look at their slow offseason build, chat with head coach Afshin Ghotbi, and hear from their first ever signing, goalkeeper Callum Irving. Vancouver Whitecaps 2023 preseason camp is underway and we’ve got your covered with all the news, rumours, and chat on this episode of the AFTN Soccer Show. We hear from head coach Vanni Sartini as he talks about the preseason ahead and getting the team ready for the tough season to come, where the ‘Caps will be fighting on four fronts. How many more players does he see coming, what will he do with the ones he has, where does new signing Mathias Laborda fit in, can the club avoid the Champions League hangover that many others suffer? We delve into all of that and more, including the search for a new shirt sponsor, plus we bring you two interviews with two of the new Canadian faces in the squad – defender Karifa Yao and forward Levonte Johnson. We chat about their journey to Vancouver, their careers so far, and their hopes for the season to come. Plus we find out the burning question – do either of them fancy a chocolate digestive?   • Episode 507 – The AFTN Soccer Show (CPL Is Back with special guests James Merriman, Alan Koch, and Martin Nash)

    11 APR 2022 · We’re back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show for your listening pleasure, and it’s a special Canadian Premier League themed show ahead of the new season that gets underway on Thursday. In this episode, we continue our chats with head coaches from around the league and bring you three feature interviews, from three teams with very different expectations this season. We kick things off with the champs, as we sit down with new Pacific FC head coach James Merriman to chat about defending their title, the comings and goings in an eventful offseason, fighting on three fronts, and more. It’s also been an eventful offseason for FC Edmonton, and not one you’d wish on any coach. With the team looking for new owners, the playing and management team decimated, and the league taking over the team and providing loan players, head coach Alan Koch has certainly had his work cut out for him. We chat with him about all the turmoil, building a squad, and what we can expect from the team this year both on and off the pitch. Continuing to move east, we end up at York United to chat with another new head coach, and a man we know very well here in Vancouver, Martin Nash. Nash has moved too York after three years as an assistant at Cavalry. Can he take the team forward after they reached the playoffs for the first time? What will a Martin Nash team look like on the pitch? And how has he found the adjustment to being the main man in the dugout? We talk about all of that and more. It’s been a week of joy for Canadian soccer, with the men’s national team all but booking a spot at this year’s World Cup in Qatar. We chat about the latest win in El Salvador, the job that John Herdman has done, how the rest of the year should look, and the team’s continuing rise in the FIFA rankings. It’s also been a busy week in Whitecapsland and we look at all the main stories from Brian White’s contract extension, to the signing of midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, to a couple of departures.     24 JAN 2022 · We’re back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show, your Vancouver Whitecaps and North American football podcast, and what a week it’s been. As the ‘Caps got their preseason camp underway, shock news emerged from Whitecapsland that Player of the Year Max Crepeau was being traded to LAFC. We break down the move and what it might mean for Vancouver, look at how $1 million in GAM might get spent, and try and make sense of a stacked forward line and how all the pieces might fall in. We’ve got three one-on-one interviews for you from the Whitecaps camp and we kick them off with a chat with trialist Kwame Awuah. The Canadian left back talks about heading to Vancouver looking to get a MLS deal, his three successful years at Forge FC, coming through the Sigma academy, and find out which current Whitecap used to be his roommate. Turning our attention to the other end of the pitch, we catch up with Theo Bair to chat about his loan spell in Norway, his growth, his ambitions, and battling for minutes back in Vancouver. Plus fellow striker David Egbo chats about his first year as a pro, his loan spell in Phoenix, finally getting into Vancouver, and his hopes for the season to come. BC is home to the new CPL champs Pacific FC and we look back at their season, and those of the other seven sides, in a season that saw a lot of ups and downs, drama, controversies, three managerial casualties, and some great football played. We chat about the high points for each team and look ahead to what they need to do to improve next season. Plus we look at the CPL coming to the lower mainland and where that fits in with the upcoming launch of League 1 BC. In a very honest and raw interview, Vanni talks about the season past, looks ahead to next year, and talks about what he learned about himself as a coach and as a person. There’s some interesting player chat and we talk about formations, the team’s identity, getting to the next level, and the pressure that comes with it all.
