  • Youth Radio - Saori Weaving Prue Simmons

11 MAR 2017 · Kaylee, Miani and Shehan chat with zoologist turned spinner and weaver Prue Simmons, who roams the country teaching a very special type of traditional Japanese craft called #Saori #weaving. Whilst exploring the remote areas of Japan in 2007, Prue stumbled upon a village devoted to traditional Japanese handicrafts in the mountains of Honshu. Learning the Japanese art of Saori weaving and natural dye techniques, Prue remained in the mountains under the tutelage of Toyomi Harada, a renowned Saori weaver. Saori is a form of freestyle weaving, encouraging creativity and expression in a textile form. In Japanese, the ‘Sa-’ comes from the Zen word ‘sai’ meaning individuality and the ‘-ori’ the word for weaving. Prue went on the create 'Dyeing To Weave' - a registered global SAORI studio which is a place of beautiful, handcrafted and sustainable textiles. Using the wonderful technique of SAORI weaving, a freestyle form of contemporary weaving from Japan, as well as natural fibre and natural, eco-friendly dyes, Prue Simmons creates amazing pieces for clothing and soft furnishings as well as running numerous workshops around Victoria and interstate. http://www.dyeingtoweave.com.au/ http://whitestonefarm.com.au/ Follow us on https://www.facebook.com/SwitchOnYourRadio/ https://www.facebook.com/musicmattersradio/ https://www.facebook.com/funkykidsradio/ https://twitter.com/SBNyouthmedia https://twitter.com/Funkykidsradio Catch Primary Perspectives live Mondays 6-7pmAEST streaming from www.3wbc.org.au and streaming Tuesdays 4-5pm www.3mdr.com You can support our youth media charity simply by purchasing the Music Matters IOA Charity Album, which is available from http://www.cbbaby.com/cd/musicmattersinternationa - every purchase is going towards helping support important youth initiatives including young people in need.
