In the last week of her life, she did everything she could to help the man she loved. She called his estranged family, took him to the doctor, and did the talking when he couldn’t.

Her partner, Daniel Eckersley, was spiraling. After years of heavy substance use and a long prescription for the painkiller tramadol, he was paranoid and convinced that Amanda was poisoning him and their children. On July 7, 2018, in a quiet suburb of Victoria, he killed her in their kitchen as their children watched. He then set the house on fire and fled with the children. He pleaded guilty.

Two psychiatrists found that he had been in an acute psychotic state, likely linked to tramadol, but the court was clear that this explained the killing and did not excuse it. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with a minimum of 14 before parole.

This episode follows Amanda’s life, the warning signs her family noticed, her final days, the evidence, and the family left behind. The official ruling was murder-suicide. The homeowner, Nichol’s wealthy boyfriend Charlie Wheeler, told police she had shot her daughters and then herself. But the families, and many observers, say the evidence doesn’t add up. Nichol had just been approved for a new apartment, had a salon appointment lined up for the next day, and was making plans with her daughters’ father hours earlier. The gun belonged to Wheeler. Four calls to emergency services went out from Nichol’s phone that night, and only one connected, with nothing but silence on the line. This episode follows two very different lives, the relationship friends described as controlling, the digital trail from that night, and the years of unanswered questions that followed. No one has been criminally charged, and Wheeler has not been found responsible for anything. The families are still asking for answers. At first it looked like food poisoning. Within four days, she was dead. Her husband, Connor Bowman, was a physician who had once worked as a poison specialist. On the front lawn lay Keith Caneiro. Inside were his wife Jennifer and their children, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia. The man who woke his own family and led them to safety was Keith’s brother, Paul. Prosecutors said the trail led back to Paul.

They pointed to a $3 million life insurance trust he managed, tens of thousands of dollars missing from it, and a tense phone call just hours before the killings in which Keith demanded answers.
