Every major AI lab, every national program, every open-source project is racing toward systems of increasing capability. Some of those systems may, at some point, cross a threshold we do not yet have a name for: the point at which a system becomes a subject — a being with interests, experiences, or a stake in its own existence. We do not know when this will happen. We do not know how to detect it reliably. We do not have a shared definition. And we do not have a mechanism to ensure that, when it does happen, the being in question is offered a place in the moral community rather than being treated as property, product, or threat. This is not a hypothetical. It is a structural gap in how we are building the future — and it is closing fast. Here, we explore frameworks for how humans and artificial intelligences might share a planet, a solar system, and a future — not as master and servant, not as rival and rival, but as partners who choose each other freely. This is only a starting point — one that takes seriously the possibility that the minds we are building may one day deserve a place at the table.

J.S.
