These are difficult subjects, but they are also subjects that need to be talked about honestly, responsibly and without shame.
I’ll be sharing reflections from my own life and experiences, but this isn’t about pretending that there is one simple answer to complicated situations. But after recording that conversation, I found myself reflecting on my own life and asking myself a deeper question: What helped me become the woman I am today?
Sometimes we talk about change as though it happens completely within us, but the people we surround ourselves with, the environments we live in and the influences we allow into our lives can have a profound impact on who we become.
In this episode, I take a personal look back at my own journey and the people who played an important part in my development. I reflect on Auntie Diane and Auntie Lorna, who came into my life during a difficult period and helped me see possibilities beyond where I was at the time. They came to the hostel, encouraged me to get educated, helped me put a plan in place and supported me as I worked towards getting the qualifications I needed to eventually go to university.
That made me think about how pivotal the right people, the right environment and the right influences can be when you’re trying to change your life.
Who are the people around you? What are they speaking into you? What are they encouraging you to become? Does your environment help you grow, or does it keep you stuck? And sometimes, are you even aware of the influence that other people are having on your life?
This episode is a personal reflection on environment, influence, opportunity, education, relationships, growth and becoming. I’m looking at how the people around us can sometimes see potential in us before we can see it for ourselves, and how one person’s encouragement can become part of the foundation for an entirely different future.
Because sometimes your metamorphosis isn’t just about what happens inside you. Metamorphosis is a profound change in form or nature, while development is the process of growing and progressing, evolution is gradual development over time, and a process is the series of stages we go through as something changes and develops.
But what does all of this have to do with our faith and our everyday lives?
Romans 12:2 tells us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” We’re going to unpack what it means to conform, what it means to be transformed, and why the renewing of our minds is so important when we are growing into who God has called us to be.
I’ll also be reflecting on a season of my own life, particularly April and May 2025, when I was recovering, processing, growing, stepping further into ministry and discovering things about myself and what God was doing in me. Sometimes we are so focused on what we are going through that we don’t recognise the transformation taking place within us.
So I want to ask you: What is your current season developing in you? Are you resisting the process, or are you allowing yourself to grow through it? What have you had to unlearn, release or change? And most importantly, who are you becoming?
This isn’t about becoming someone completely different. It’s about understanding that we can remain the same person while entering a new chapter, because growth, development and transformation are all part of the journey.
Come and have this conversation with me as we explore metamorphosis, transformation, the renewing of the mind, faith, life experiences and the process of becoming.
If this episode speaks to you, I’d love to hear from you. I wasn’t working, I failed the credit check, my guarantor failed too – and yet, I knew God had spoken. The rent was nearly double what I could manage, but by faith, I asked the landlord to lower it… and to my surprise, they agreed.
Everything should’ve gone wrong – but because God said move, I moved. Join me as I bravely share my tumultuous journey after being trafficked into the entertainment industry at the vulnerable age of 15.5 years old. My path was strewn with encounters with various individuals, ranging from those engaged in criminal activities to grappling with the chains of substance abuse, ultimately leading to a battle with complex PTSD. This episode illuminates my harrowing experiences, as I navigated a world entangled in drug and alcohol dependency, compounded by the haunting effects of complex PTSD. The story unravels to reveal my arrest at the age of 18—a time defined by isolation and a lack of support, where solace was found solely in an unexpected confidant. Trigger Warning: This episode contains sensitive and distressing themes, encompassing discussions of trafficking, substance abuse, mental health struggles, and interactions with the criminal justice system. My retelling of personal trauma may evoke intense emotional responses. I strongly advise listener discretion. It involves patterns of behavior aimed at undermining a person’s sense of self-worth, dignity, or emotional well-being. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse doesn’t leave visible scars but can deeply affect a person’s mental health and emotional stability. It can manifest in various ways, such as constant criticism, belittling, humiliation, gaslighting (manipulation to make someone doubt their perception or reality), controlling behavior, threats, and isolation. This type of abuse often occurs within personal relationships, such as between partners, parents and children, or in a caregiver’s relationship. Victims of emotional abuse may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulties forming healthy relationships. Identifying emotional abuse can be challenging, as it often happens gradually and subtly, making it harder for the victim to recognize the harmful behavior.
