There was no single Maya collapse and no single cause. Drought, warfare, political fragmentation, changing trade networks, pressure on food and water systems, and population movement affected different Maya regions in different ways.Archaeology, inscriptions, settlement evidence and climate records allow us to reconstruct parts of this story, but they also reveal its complexity. Monumental building declined and dynasties ended across many cities of the southern lowlands, while other Maya centres continued, adapted and reorganised. And the Maya did not disappear. Maya societies continued beyond the Classic period, and millions of Maya people remain part of living communities today. This episode keeps that continuity at the centre of the story rather than turning political and urban change into a myth of a vanished civilisation.Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. We also visit the famous consulting room and couch at Berggasse 19, where listening itself became the basis of a new kind of psychological treatment.
The story follows the publication of The Interpretation of Dreams, the growth of the psychoanalytic movement, Freud’s relationships and eventual breaks with Alfred Adler and Carl Jung, and the controversies that followed theories which challenged many of the assumptions of his age.
We then follow Freud through the difficult final period of his life — years of illness, the Nazi annexation of Austria, his escape from Vienna in 1938, and his last year in London, where his consulting room was reconstructed around the objects and books he had carried from his former home.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. We follow the Buddha’s life as carefully as the surviving evidence allows — from the Śākya world into which he was born, through his departure from household life, his years as a wandering renunciant, the extreme austerities he eventually abandoned, his awakening, and the long decades of teaching that followed.
Along the way, we explore some of the ideas at the heart of the Buddhist tradition: the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, craving, impermanence, non-self, karma and the possibility of liberation from suffering.
We also keep history and sacred biography clearly distinguished, allowing the traditional stories surrounding the Buddha’s life to remain part of the journey without presenting later devotional accounts as modern historical fact.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening.
There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to.
