En el marco de la Semana de la Nutrición en Roma 2026, los países miembros del GRULAC celebrarán un Panel Regional orientado a promover el intercambio de experiencias, enfoques innovadores y buenas prácticas sobre nutrición y sistemas agroalimentarios sostenibles en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC).

En primer lugar, los gobiernos participantes presentarán experiencias nacionales vinculadas a agricultura sensible a la nutrición, y sus conexiones con iniciativas nacionales en alimentación escolar, diversidad alimentaria, protección social, sistemas agroalimentarios territoriales, producción local y resiliencia climática, compartiendo políticas, instrumentos, lecciones aprendidas y resultados alcanzados en la integración de la nutrición dentro de sus estrategias de desarrollo sostenible y seguridad alimentaria.

En segundo lugar, el Panel facilitará un espacio de diálogo interactivo entre los países de la región y los representantes de gobiernos, organismos internacionales, instituciones financieras, academia, sociedad civil, movimientos sociales, redes juveniles, actores territoriales y otros socios estratégicos vinculados a la nutrición, la agricultura, la seguridad alimentaria y los sistemas agroalimentarios sostenibles, con el propósito de promover un espacio multisectorial de diálogo, intercambio de experiencias y construcción de alianzas orientadas a fortalecer la cooperación regional y las acciones conjuntas en materia de nutrición y desarrollo sostenible en América Latina y el Caribe, además de reflexionar sobre los desafíos comunes asociados a la malnutrición, las desigualdades territoriales, el acceso a dietas saludables y la sostenibilidad de los sistemas alimentarios, promoviendo enfoques más integrales vinculados a la producción, el territorio, la diversidad cultural y la resiliencia de las comunidades rurales.

By reducing production and transport costs, shortening supply chains, and creating predictable local demand through public procurement and social assistance programmes, they make nutritious foods more accessible and affordable. At the same time, they contribute to transform and strengthen local food systems.

The session examines how locally produced, fortified and nutrient‑dense foods can support the full nutrition continuum, from prevention to treatment, through a combination of market-based and programmatic platforms, including home‑grown school feeding, nutrition‑sensitive social protection, and humanitarian response.

Discussions will highlight how coordinated public‑private action can expand access to safe, nutritious foods while strengthening local food systems and building resilience to future shocks.

In a changing global context, dietary guidelines are increasingly expected to move beyond nutrient adequacy alone and adopt food‑system‑based approaches that consider nutritional value, health, sustainability, cultural relevance, and feasibility. This shift requires the integration of a wide array of data—from food availability, dietary patterns, nutrient composition and bioavailability, and environmental considerations to robust evidence on human nutrient requirements.

This 75‑minute thematic session will articulate the relevance of data in building a broader evidence landscape supporting the next generation of dietary guidelines. It will present the new FAO methodology for developing dietary guidelines considering food systems, the joint FAO–IAEA work on energy metabolism and protein digestibility assessment, highlighting how new empirical data, when curated in big databases, contribute to this goal, and showcase how Mexico has integrated its guidelines into regulatory frameworks. Rather than focusing on energy and protein in isolation, the session will consider how big data can aid dialogue on updating energy and protein requirements in tandem with the latest evidence, how the data can be interpreted alongside food‑system data to inform coherent, realistic, and context‑specific food systems‑based dietary guidelines, and how these can inform policy and regulations.

Particular attention will be given to the relevance of big data for low‑ and middle‑income countries, where dietary guidelines must respond simultaneously to malnutrition in all its forms, rapid dietary transitions, and evolving food systems.

By connecting data science with food‑system thinking and policy processes, the session will underscore the value of inter‑agency and multisectoral collaboration in delivering dietary guidelines that are evidence‑based, policy‑relevant, and fit for a changing world.

En el marco de la Semana de la Nutrición en Roma 2026, los países miembros del GRULAC celebrarán un Panel Regional orientado a promover el intercambio de experiencias, enfoques innovadores y buenas prácticas sobre nutrición y sistemas agroalimentarios sostenibles en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC).

En primer lugar, los gobiernos participantes presentarán experiencias nacionales vinculadas a agricultura sensible a la nutrición, y sus conexiones con iniciativas nacionales en alimentación escolar, diversidad alimentaria, protección social, sistemas agroalimentarios territoriales, producción local y resiliencia climática, compartiendo políticas, instrumentos, lecciones aprendidas y resultados alcanzados en la integración de la nutrición dentro de sus estrategias de desarrollo sostenible y seguridad alimentaria.

En segundo lugar, el Panel facilitará un espacio de diálogo interactivo entre los países de la región y los representantes de gobiernos, organismos internacionales, instituciones financieras, academia, sociedad civil, movimientos sociales, redes juveniles, actores territoriales y otros socios estratégicos vinculados a la nutrición, la agricultura, la seguridad alimentaria y los sistemas agroalimentarios sostenibles, con el propósito de promover un espacio multisectorial de diálogo, intercambio de experiencias y construcción de alianzas orientadas a fortalecer la cooperación regional y las acciones conjuntas en materia de nutrición y desarrollo sostenible en América Latina y el Caribe, además de reflexionar sobre los desafíos comunes asociados a la malnutrición, las desigualdades territoriales, el acceso a dietas saludables y la sostenibilidad de los sistemas alimentarios, promoviendo enfoques más integrales vinculados a la producción, el territorio, la diversidad cultural y la resiliencia de las comunidades rurales.

The IFAD/IFC event, Feeding Change, brought together leaders from development institutions, governments, financial institutions, and the private sector to explore how targeted investments can address malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The event was opened by IFAD president Alvaro Lario, emphasising how smallholder farmers and especially women, young people and indigenous peoples need to be at the heart of our investment strategies to truly defeat malnutrition and that integration across sectors is inevitable.

The two-part panel focused first on public sector approaches, with speakers from IFAD, AUDA-NEPAD, GAIN, and Wellspring Development highlighting how governments and development partners are catalysing nutrition-sensitive investments across agriculture, food systems and rural development. Insights into approaches, tools and models to screen assessments into SMEs achieving greater nutrition impact were shared as well, highlighting the importance of blended finance models ensuring private and public money are invested for nutritional impacts. IFAD further emphasized inclusive investment designs to reach vulnerable groups—especially smallholder farmers, women, and youth.

The second panel shifted to the private sector, where representatives from Volcafe, IFC, and GAFSP discussed how business incentives and blended finance can unlock greater nutrition impact. IFC's Adam Struve and GAFSP’s Niraj Shah underlined the business case for investing in nutrition, while Volcafe shared practical steps already taken in their value chains.

The session concluded with a call for stronger collaboration across sectors to scale nutrition financing and align public-private efforts for better and more impactful investments and consequently better outcomes.

Interventions from CSO, youth and academia, showed how agroecological practices could optimize diets and foster holistic approaches towards sustainable food value chains and improved nutrition. Evidence was shared that including the political and gender dimensions in agroecological programmes increases the likelihood of positive outcomes. It provided examples for the integration of agroecology principles into food security and nutrition national development plans, policies and strategies, articulating objectives and targets for enhanced impact. In a complex development landscape marked by the urgent need to mitigate environmental issues, greater efforts should be done to aim at producing healthy, safe and sustainable foods benefitting biodiversity, climate adaptation, and nutrition, so that both human and planetary health are not only conditions but also results of our joint efforts for sustainable and agroecological food systems transformation.
