The trail took us through desert scenery, dry arroyos, cactus, prickly pears, gnarly oaks and some interesting little evergreens, while the distant snow-covered mountains made a spectacular backdrop. We were gradually increasing our running time, and even at about 2,000 metres elevation I was feeling pretty good as we settled into the Jackal pace. Along the way we encountered dogs, cyclists, level crossings and plenty of curious sights, while I wrestled with the eight-minute video recording limit and tried to keep everything synchronized.
