THE LEGEND OF SIGRID THE HAUGHTY

Thus doth the ancient history of the Slavs entwine with the tempestuous fates of the Kings of the North. 'Tis a tale of Sigrid, the haughty daughter of Duke Mieszko, who loved freedom above all else. The proud princess, ere she became wife and mother of kings, did spurn the wooing of greedy men, treating them to cruel fire. By the name of Sigrid Storråda, that is, the Haughty, did they then proclaim her.

This woman did hold fidelity to her forebears higher than foreign crowns and gold. When the King of the Norwegians, Olaf, durst raise his hand against Piast blood and struck her across the face, he knew not at all that this blow would swiftly return unto him as a doomful wave.

Sigrid did strike a wise alliance with the Danish ruler Sven, that in a great sea battle she might send her foe unto the murky depths. Yet this tale is not merely of bloody vengeance, but a teaching of cool reason. For the princess did bring peace unto distant lands, made the laws as one, and gave bread unto orphans. Ere the lord of the underworld descended into the realm of Navia, he walked upon the earth in human guise. Tall and dark was he, and his eyes shone like deep wells. The beasts straightway sensed his power and bowed their heads in humility. And whosoever refused the will of the underworld lord lost far more than he would have willed.

There lived in those days a young shepherd, Borut. A grievous sickness consumed his mother, and a small herd of cows was his only wealth. Old folk in the Bulgarian Pirin Mountains say that ere the first human paths were trodden there, a strange and wondrous heavy river flowed in the valley. The mysterious, ancient Lamia dwelt there. Old folk say that every river and old mill had its hidden master. Thus it was ages ago in a certain mill. Above the swift current stood a wooden structure whose wheel turned by day and by night. Howbeit, one wondrous thing gave the miller no peace. When the moon shone bright, the mill wheel would suddenly halt without any cause.

The water flowed swiftly, yet the great machine kept silence, as though bewitched by evil intent. Upon the wet planks of the pier, the master found strange frog-like footprints that vanished into the depths. This was no human doing! That selfsame night, the miller kept a lonely vigil at the doorway. Whereupon, from the black depths, a wet, greenish figure emerged, its hair tangled with river weed. Olden shepherds do say that ere man did plow the first field, the wild mountains held their lord. And his name was Zmey, who hailed straight from the misty peaks of the Rhodopes. Know ye then a creature that possessed two visages, altogether unalike. Yet he sought neither gold nor bloody sacrifice.

In days of yore, when the oaks did rustle upon the marches of Wagria, folk whispered in dread that 'twas a realm closed unto liars. 'Twas there that Prove, the judge of the gods, did wield his might. There are ancient mysteries in this world, hidden by the whispering wildwood. When trees yet had names, the mighty goddess Mokosh did weave the fates of the earth. In days of yore, when the world did awaken from fierce chaos, the first wondrous radiance flared within the forge of Svarog. From this uncommon heat was born a mighty god with a heart as burning as life itself. Dazhbog. A youth who brought unto the tribes of men the promise of a bright day.

Great Svarog did forge a starry shield from a meteorite, which did blind the demons of the night. Yet the earth was still barren. Dazhbog, lord of the sun, set forth then into the depths of the wildwood. There he waged a stern battle with the Primeval Aurochs and ended this strife in victory. From the beast's flesh sprang forth straightway the first golden grain, and from its horn flowed mead and bounty unto men.

At the last, the god received a heavenly chariot and twain fiery steeds. Without fear he harnessed these beasts and ordained the first course of the year. Today doth Dazhbog traverse the heavens each day, bearing hope unto mankind. This Slavic tale doth unveil the wisdom of bygone ages. When fear and darkness lay upon homesteads, Kresnik alone, the god of fire, bringeth salvation. With a spear he smiteth night monsters and can melt the fierce hail. This forgotten mythology of the southern Slavs concealeth eternal truths of the struggle between light and darkness. And it discovereth the mystery of why to this day the St. John's fire burneth upon the hills.

Once upon a time Slavic fields bore golden grain, and fat herds grazed safely in the valleys. The peasants knew no harsh hunger, and their life flowed in great peace. 'Twas then she wandered through villages and across the field-boundaries. Not in the bright day, but at dusk, when human thought groweth frail. This is Misery (Beda). The demon of destitution, who stood at the threshold and waited. And whosoever invited her with lamentation, grumbling, or a covetous gaze upon another's goods, into their chamber she entered without knocking.

THE LEGEND OF PLANETNIK

When the green wilderness of Kurpie throbbed with life, the azure waves concealed great wealth. Fish were plentiful, and the people dwelt in prosperity. Yet man quickly forgetteth humility. Pride blinded the hearts of the ancient Kurpians. Then did the ancient Planetnik, the mighty ruler of clouds and weather, draw near over the woodlands. Ill-treated by the folk, he repaid them most cruelly.

Give ear then, how Planetnik, wearied by his strife with deceitful sky serpents, sought rest in the land of Kurpie. He yearned to taste the coolness beside the pure waters, yet human insolence reft him of his peace. The Storyteller Małgorzata telleth how the lord of clouds felt scorn, and how his wrath shook the earth. Neither drums, wooden horns, nor the sweet honey of the beekeepers could appease him.

The great cloud-master took the azure waters and bore them far unto the north. There, where Masuria gleameth today. In Kurpie he left naught but sand, dunes, and dry pine woodlands. Know thee that, as Slavic legends proclaim, this is the very reason why there be no lakes in Kurpie. And the custom of setting bread in the window during a tempest doth stem from this.

Dost thou think that Świętopełk built Gdańsk? Legends proclaim it was otherwise, and in older times. The mystery of Gdańsk's beginnings is concealed within this ancient tale, which taketh its origin from a wondrous dream of Prince Mieszko I.

Let us journey back to the ages when the history of Poland was born, and the first Piasts united the Slavic tribes. Minstrels sang in those days of the great waters. Yet the mighty chieftain Mieszko, son of Siemomysł, alone turned his gaze unto the north. He swiftly grasped that a true empire must found its might upon the land and the salt depths of the Baltic Sea.

There, where the rivers Motława and Vistula join their currents, the prince and his retinue fell asleep upon bear skins. In the night, a prophetic dream visited the prince. A dream of a great stronghold full of riches. He beheld bellied ships and men paying for wares with a strange ore. It was no gold, but gleaming amber.

At dawn, Mieszko thrust his sword into the sand and proclaimed that the gate of his realm should arise here. Thus telleth the legend of the beginnings of the stronghold that changed our Polish history. The ancient stronghold, which was named Gyddanyzc. And Mieszko's son, the valiant Bolesław the Brave, raised a mighty fortress here, which in time they began to call the Golden City.

Journey in thy mind to ages past, unto the dark Valley of the Three Winds. There thou shalt meet the craftsman Bartholomew, who was led to ruin by his eternal putting off of deeds until the morrow. For in his cottage dwelt an imp. A spiteful creature of Slavic myths, that feedeth upon human neglect and delay.

This olden tale from ancient Slavic days layeth bare the painful truth of putting off one's toil for later. The youth of today knoweth this all too well. In times of yore, it was no different. Wherefore did little Johny strike terror into the whole village, and was he truly a son of demons? The elders say that in the Valley of Mist the sun riseth otherwise, and the river whispereth the names of those who have departed. 'Twas there the legend of the changeling was born.
