A stern winter had bound the river Pisa in hard ice, and within the cottage of the old raftsman, the wind did but howl through the empty corners. The hardy fellow of Masuria had naught to put into his pot. Suddenly, a klobuk crept across the threshold. A beast as black as pitch, with eyes burning like coals! Listen well of this, why one ought make no pacts with a klobuk.

A tale we recount this day, of how the desires of mortal men did tear a mighty god asunder unto the four corners of the world. When four folk at the selfsame hour did beg for deliverance, when sword, horn, and white steed did tremble in the dark, the primeval Slavic heavens were cleft in twain! Hearken how the mighty god Svetovit was born anew from human suffering.

The mighty god Svetovit did once gaze upon the world with but a single visage. Unfathomable power he wielded, yet even the gods cannot answer every mortal cry. Once upon a time, four clans came unto the temple. Warriors from the north demanded bloody might, whilst elders from the south begged for blissful peace. Tillers from the east prayed for a bountiful harvest, whilst soothsayers from the west sought a clear omen in the wake of fires. A single gaze could not encompass so many opposing paths.

Hearken unto the tale that the storyteller Małgorzata doth recount this day. Know ye what difference doth part the idol of Zbruch, called Światowid, from the primeval lord of the heavens. Uncover the mystery of how the four faces came to be: War, Harvest, Prophecy, and Destiny. Whence came the household sprites? From a single scamp they descend. In ages past, when settlements stood closer to the dense forest than to reason, there lived a most nimble lad. He had two eyes sharp as coals, and a smile that ever heralded dire mischief.

Ere the lord of the underworld descended into the realm of Navia, he walked upon the earth in human guise. Tall and dark was he, and his eyes shone like deep wells. The beasts straightway sensed his power and bowed their heads in humility. And whosoever refused the will of the underworld lord lost far more than he would have willed.

Learn ye the secret of the White River and the demonic creature with the body of a serpent and a woman. Old folk say that every river and old mill had its hidden master. Thus it was ages ago in a certain mill. Above the swift current stood a wooden structure whose wheel turned by day and by night. Howbeit, one wondrous thing gave the miller no peace. When the moon shone bright, the mill wheel would suddenly halt without any cause.

The water flowed swiftly, yet the great machine kept silence, as though bewitched by evil intent. Upon the wet planks of the pier, the master found strange frog-like footprints that vanished into the depths. This was no human doing! Olden shepherds do say that ere man did plow the first field, the wild mountains held their lord. And his name was Zmey, who hailed straight from the misty peaks of the Rhodopes. In days of yore, when the oaks did rustle upon the marches of Wagria, folk whispered in dread that 'twas a realm closed unto liars. 'Twas there that Prove, the judge of the gods, did wield his might. Today, this ancient legend doth awaken anew. Ye shall come to know the tale of a feud over land betwixt the warrior Kate and the wise Mirona, who did listen unto the whispers of the earth.

The darksome oak grove doth guard the truth. The beliefs of the Polabian Slavs did show that there is no fleeing from the truth. The holy wildwood beholds every trespass, and the trees do guard laws older than the race of men.

There are ancient mysteries in this world, hidden by the whispering wildwood. When trees yet had names, the mighty goddess Mokosh did weave the fates of the earth. Side by side there grew two neighbors. The proud aspen did prize her beauty and lofty stature. The humble hazel kept close unto the earth, giving shade unto wanderers. When a stern tempest drew near, the time of trial had come.

Why doth the aspen tremble in dread, whilst the hazel is never struck by lightning? Listen well, how pride doth bring forth everlasting doom. THE LEGEND OF DAZHBOG

In days of yore, when the world did awaken from fierce chaos, the first wondrous radiance flared within the forge of Svarog. From this uncommon heat was born a mighty god with a heart as burning as life itself. Dazhbog. A youth who brought unto the tribes of men the promise of a bright day.

Great Svarog did forge a starry shield from a meteorite, which did blind the demons of the night. Yet the earth was still barren. Dazhbog, lord of the sun, set forth then into the depths of the wildwood. There he waged a stern battle with the Primeval Aurochs and ended this strife in victory. From the beast's flesh sprang forth straightway the first golden grain, and from its horn flowed mead and bounty unto men.

At the last, the god received a heavenly chariot and twain fiery steeds. Without fear he harnessed these beasts and ordained the first course of the year. Today doth Dazhbog traverse the heavens each day, bearing hope unto mankind. This Slavic tale doth unveil the wisdom of bygone ages. When fear and darkness lay upon homesteads, Kresnik alone, the god of fire, bringeth salvation. With a spear he smiteth night monsters and can melt the fierce hail. This forgotten mythology of the southern Slavs concealeth eternal truths of the struggle between light and darkness. And it discovereth the mystery of why to this day the St. John's fire burneth upon the hills.

Once upon a time Slavic fields bore golden grain, and fat herds grazed safely in the valleys. The peasants knew no harsh hunger, and their life flowed in great peace. But unexpectedly the eternal night arrived, refusing to recede. From the dense gloom crawled forth the creatures of the night. These monsters drank blood and milk from the cattle, leaving the beasts without strength. The cruel serpentine demon took the shepherds' breath away in sleep, and from the black clouds struck Hala, mistress of storms and hail. The severe frost broke the crops, and rivers swelled destroying human property. The terrified people had already lost all hope.

Then did the elders kindle the holy pyre upon the highest hill. From the great fire stepped forth the defender. Mighty Kresnik, god of fire. His eyes were bright as the summer sun, and upon his brow he bore the sign of the flame. Bend then your ear to our audio drama, which revealeth these ancient deeds. THE LEGEND OF MISERY (BEDA)

She appeared long ago, even in the days when smoke from hearths ascended by a straight path to the heavens, and men spake more with the earth than with one another. 'Twas then she wandered through villages and across the field-boundaries. Not in the bright day, but at dusk, when human thought groweth frail. This is Misery (Beda). The demon of destitution, who stood at the threshold and waited. And whosoever invited her with lamentation, grumbling, or a covetous gaze upon another's goods, into their chamber she entered without knocking.

She possessed not a single form. To some she appeared as a woman, withered and stooped, in ragged garb. To others as a wayside stone, some small beast, or another trifling object, so that it might intrigue a man and he would bear it across his threshold. As the ancient Slavic legend proclaimeth, wherever Misery tread, there the bread hardened, the grain rotted, and the hearts of men turned to stone.

When the green wilderness of Kurpie throbbed with life, the azure waves concealed great wealth. Fish were plentiful, and the people dwelt in prosperity. Yet man quickly forgetteth humility. Pride blinded the hearts of the ancient Kurpians. Then did the ancient Planetnik, the mighty ruler of clouds and weather, draw near over the woodlands. Ill-treated by the folk, he repaid them most cruelly.

Give ear then, how Planetnik, wearied by his strife with deceitful sky serpents, sought rest in the land of Kurpie. He yearned to taste the coolness beside the pure waters, yet human insolence reft him of his peace. The Storyteller Małgorzata telleth how the lord of clouds felt scorn, and how his wrath shook the earth. Neither drums, wooden horns, nor the sweet honey of the beekeepers could appease him.

THE LEGEND OF THE WAWEL DRAGON

Beneath the olden fable of the shoemaker and the monster lurketh a darkness of which few speak today. The malevolent god Patollo knew no mercy for the Baltic folk of Pomesania. By his doing, the silvery fish in the rivers perished in silence, and the lush rushes turned into gray slime, dragging down all that dared draw near unto the shore.

Yet there arose a fisherman with a heart harder than granite, who felt no dread of the darkness. He challenged the lord of destruction and made a wager of life and death, having naught left to lose. With his courage and valor he won the favor of the gods, who bestowed their aid upon him, that he might accomplish the impossible task. And so it came to pass. A voice from the heavens proclaimed then that this land should forever belong unto the hero, and the river gleamed once more with pure silver.

THE LEGEND OF THE DUNAJEC RIVER

When the grim Pieniny mountains were yet wreathed in thick mist, the local folk suffered sore poverty. Fertile land was scarce, and a mighty lake, known of old as the Great Water or the Dunaj, flooded the fairest valleys. In our Slavic Legends series, we unveil unto ye a tale of the forefathers, of how the legend of the Dunajec was born. A tale of man's struggle against hard, unyielding nature, which begrudged them bread.

Storyteller Małgorzata shall tell ye how King Boleslav the Brave himself stood upon the peak of Mount Gorc and took pity upon the fate of his people. Not with a sword against foreign hosts, but with wisdom and an axe against hard stone did he command them to march. Ye shall witness the superhuman toil of the peasants, who hewed the stone day and night, to free the great water from its snare and reclaim the earth for sowing. Yet when human arms failed of strength, and the mountains would not yield, a thing truly beyond grasping came to pass.

These wondrous Polish legends and folk beliefs carry a mighty weight of emotion. When the river Viadrus, known today as the Oder, flowed wild through the primeval forests, a legend was born of a place where the current suddenly turns back. 'Tis a tale of the settlement of Podlesie, where the water strikes the bank with such might, as if kneeling before an unseen power. 'Twas there, beneath that bend of the river, that Rokita made his dwelling. A water fiend and guardian of the marshes, who gathered drowners and horned brethren within his damp hollow.

We shall tell ye what the mysterious devil's pit is, and how ancient folk beliefs explained the ruinous power of the whirlpools. Rokita, that water demon, undermined the bank so deeply that the whole ridge, alongside his lair, might have collapsed into a dry crater. Ye shall learn the cunning of our forefathers, who not with the sword, but with wisdom and the toil of their own hands, casting up walls of sand, cut the fiend off from the life-giving dampness.

These tales of old reveal the moment when a thunderbolt struck the shore, and the river drew back, driving Rokita toward wilder depths. Thus doth ancient Slavic demonology weave itself into the history of the realm, showing how nature can alter her course in but an instant. Where darkness mingleth with slumbering phantoms, the Fever Demon hath her dwelling, a demon of sickness who sendeth fever and chills upon the folk. When the sun sinketh beneath the horizon, she deserteth her caverns and spreadeth through the settlements as a pale mist.
