'Tis a tale of Sigrid, the haughty daughter of Duke Mieszko, who loved freedom above all else. The proud princess, ere she became wife and mother of kings, did spurn the wooing of greedy men, treating them to cruel fire. By the name of Sigrid Storråda, that is, the Haughty, did they then proclaim her.

This woman did hold fidelity to her forebears higher than foreign crowns and gold. When the King of the Norwegians, Olaf, durst raise his hand against Piast blood and struck her across the face, he knew not at all that this blow would swiftly return unto him as a doomful wave.

Sigrid did strike a wise alliance with the Danish ruler Sven, that in a great sea battle she might send her foe unto the murky depths. Yet this tale is not merely of bloody vengeance, but a teaching of cool reason. For the princess did bring peace unto distant lands, made the laws as one, and gave bread unto orphans. For what is justice, when it heedeth not mercy? Hearken how the mighty god Svetovit was born anew from human suffering.

The mighty god Svetovit did once gaze upon the world with but a single visage. Tillers from the east prayed for a bountiful harvest, whilst soothsayers from the west sought a clear omen in the wake of fires. A single gaze could not encompass so many opposing paths.

Hearken unto the tale that the storyteller Małgorzata doth recount this day. Know ye what difference doth part the idol of Zbruch, called Światowid, from the primeval lord of the heavens. Uncover the mystery of how the four faces came to be: War, Harvest, Prophecy, and Destiny. Feel the wisdom of the forebears' faiths, that thou mightest grasp which of the faces doth hold our entire world in check unto this very day.

00:00 Of the idol of Światowid and the god Svetovit
00:51 How four folk came unto the temple
01:47 Of the omen of the steed, sword, and carven horn
02:41 When the god's visage split unto the four winds
03:02 Of the faces of War, Harvest, and the Soothsayer
04:09 How the face of Destiny came to be
04:50 Of peace and the desires of mortal men

#Svetovit #SlavicPantheon #SlavicLegends

– – – – –

🎼 music: Angevin - Thatched Villagers
🎻 composer: Kevin MacLeod
📄 Creative Commons 4.0 license
🔗 source: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200110
🛠️ editing & production: Bartłomiej Dwornik

– – – – –

The Slavic Legends podcast

Our voices ye hear are but echoes, crafted by a machine. Old folk in the Bulgarian Pirin Mountains say that ere the first human paths were trodden there, a strange and wondrous heavy river flowed in the valley. The mysterious, ancient Lamia dwelt there. Above, she resembled a maiden, but from the waist down her body was covered in dire, scaly coils.

The Lamias, demons known unto the South Slavs, seldom sought strife with man. Yet this lady of the White River possessed a wondrous, magnetic power. Whosoever halted but once by her stream lost his heart for daily toil and could no longer dwell among human kind. Peasants returned from the forest depths utterly changed, sunk in silence or seeing things hidden from the sight of others.

Hearken, then, unto the Storyteller Małgorzata and know why the terrified villagers gathered at dawn and marched to the waters, bearing sharp iron and destructive fire. How they sought to drive the lady of the waters from her ancient domain. Understanding not that the eternal order of the world cannot be broken so easily.

00:00 Of the White River flowing amidst the Pirin Mountains
00:37 How the lady of serpent body emerged from the depths
01:33 Of the strange slowing of time
02:15 When she began to shatter the order of the peasants
02:55 How at dawn they set forth with fire and iron
04:06 Of the dire rift in the earth and the river's breath
05:08 Of the great lesson that remained in the valley

#Lamia #SlavicDemons #SlavicLegends

– – – – –

🎼 music: Angevin - Thatched Villagers
🎻 composer: Kevin MacLeod
📄 Creative Commons 4.0 license
🔗 source: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200110
🛠️ editing & production: Bartłomiej Dwornik

– – – – –

The Slavic Legends podcast

Our voices ye hear are but echoes, crafted by a machine. Then must the wise woman perform her rites. She must cast mugwort and juniper into the fire, and drive away the evil powers with the smoke. Thus begins the wondrous rite of rodovyny.

Rodovyny is an ancient rite, which doth tightly bind the kin. The Rozhanitsy and the god Rod do arrive in silence, to write the child's fate and ward it against the mamuny.

On the seventh day, the sacred bath of the newborn came to pass. Then must the wise woman perform her rites. She must cast mugwort and juniper into the fire, and drive away the evil powers with the smoke. Thus begins the wondrous rite of rodovyny.

Rodovyny is an ancient rite, which doth tightly bind the kin. The father wraps the threshold in red wool, whilst at midnight bread, honey, and milk are set upon the table. The Rozhanitsy and the god Rod do arrive in silence, to write the child's fate and ward it against the mamuny.

On the seventh day, the sacred bath of the newborn came to pass. Into the water went chamomile, oak leaves, a silver coin, and an egg for the vigor of life. 'Twas pure magic and the wisdom of nature, which our forefathers did fiercely revere.

Listen well, as the storyteller Małgorzata doth speak of olden traditions. Of reverence for one's roots, the secrets of the Slavic chamber, and customs of centuries past. When trees yet had names, the mighty goddess Mokosh did weave the fates of the earth. Side by side there grew two neighbors. The proud aspen did prize her beauty and lofty stature. The humble hazel kept close unto the earth, giving shade unto wanderers. When a stern tempest drew near, the time of trial had come.

Why doth the aspen tremble in dread, whilst the hazel is never struck by lightning? Listen well, how pride doth bring forth everlasting doom. A mother did once flee into the wilderness before a storm, clasping a defenseless babe unto her breast. The haughty tree cast the mother out, fearing for its fair leaves. Only the humble neighbor, the hazel, opened its arms, forming a living shelter. It fed the woman with nuts and rustled a lullaby.

The mighty Mokosh beheld this, and for all ages she decreed the fate of both trees.

For its selfishness and pride, the aspen was punished with eternal dread. It doth tremble without end unto this day, even when the wind falls dead away. She bestowed a blessing upon the goodly hazel, that no lightning bolt should ever strike it. Listen well, as the storyteller Małgorzata doth speak of the secrets of the wilderness, and of how Slavic myths did condemn a heart devoid of mercy.

00:00 Of the ancient grove and the dominion of Mokosh
00:41 How the great mother did weigh the hearts of trees
01:27 Of the prideful aspen and the humble hazel
02:16 A stern tempest brought forth the time of trial
03:01 How the haughty tree did spurn the pleas
03:48 Of the goddess's wrath and the everlasting trembling
04:34 A blessing for the faithful hazel

#Aspen #Hazel #SlavicMythology #SlavicLegends

– – – – –

🎼 music: Angevin - Thatched Villagers
🎻 composer: Kevin MacLeod
📄 Creative Commons 4.0 license
🔗 source: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200110
🛠️ editing & production: Bartłomiej Dwornik

– – – – –

The Slavic Legends podcast

Our voices ye hear are but echoes, crafted by a machine. Ere the first men came unto the river Nysa, a hidden life did throb beneath the layer of clay. Ancient, little creatures did dwell there. Mysterious beings, that heard the growing of roots and felt the trembling of pure water. They guarded the earthly order with devotion, lest the dampness should ruin the woods.

The folk of yore by the Nysa swiftly grasped that they were not alone in the wilderness. Tools left behind did shift their place of their own accord, and the dead fire smoldered pale in the night. One time they understood why. From out the thick darkness came little, stout figures. Subterranean beings, that desired neither mortal dwellings nor gold. They demanded naught but a morsel of sustenance and holy silence. Thus was born a pact that none ever set down in writing. Whoso gave them bread in silence, his earth was lighter to dig, and his toil went briskly. Yet woe betide them who brought great clamor and pride unto these parts!

This legend of the dwarves of Gubin, enshrouded in the gloom of ages, doth bring to mind the ancient beliefs of the Slavs. And they do hide the great wisdom of our forebears. With a spear he smiteth night monsters and can melt the fierce hail. This forgotten mythology of the southern Slavs concealeth eternal truths of the struggle between light and darkness. And it discovereth the mystery of why to this day the St. John's fire burneth upon the hills.

Once upon a time Slavic fields bore golden grain, and fat herds grazed safely in the valleys. The peasants knew no harsh hunger, and their life flowed in great peace. But unexpectedly the eternal night arrived, refusing to recede. From the dense gloom crawled forth the creatures of the night. These monsters drank blood and milk from the cattle, leaving the beasts without strength. The cruel serpentine demon took the shepherds' breath away in sleep, and from the black clouds struck Hala, mistress of storms and hail. The severe frost broke the crops, and rivers swelled destroying human property. The terrified people had already lost all hope.

Then did the elders kindle the holy pyre upon the highest hill. From the great fire stepped forth the defender. Mighty Kresnik, god of fire. His eyes were bright as the summer sun, and upon his brow he bore the sign of the flame. Bend then your ear to our audio drama, which revealeth these ancient deeds. Legends proclaim it was otherwise, and in older times. The mystery of Gdańsk's beginnings is concealed within this ancient tale, which taketh its origin from a wondrous dream of Prince Mieszko I.

Let us journey back to the ages when the history of Poland was born, and the first Piasts united the Slavic tribes. Minstrels sang in those days of the great waters. Yet the mighty chieftain Mieszko, son of Siemomysł, alone turned his gaze unto the north. It was no gold, but gleaming amber.

At dawn, Mieszko thrust his sword into the sand and proclaimed that the gate of his realm should arise here. The Storyteller Małgorzata shall bear us back to the days when the veil to the netherworld was exceedingly thin. How this wondrous creature, suspended betwixt life and death, sought not blood. He was in desperate need of human salvation.

Only young Dobrochna had within her courage enough to conquer the fear. A forgotten, nameless grave upon the edge of the meadow she found. She cleansed the earth and laid flowers upon it. Then she beheld a shadow woven of light, which bowed its head in thanks and departed in peace.

00:00 A word of the vampire, neither spirit nor man
00:32 How the Lusatian village lay amidst the fog
01:12 When a wondrous transfiguration of the night came to pass
02:02 Valiant Dobrochna standeth before the phantom
02:57 The seeking of the grave in the forgotten wilderness
03:48 The revealing of the truth before the peasants in the village
04:40 How living lights brought back quiet peace

#Vampire #SlavicDemons #SlavicBestiary #SlavicLegends

– – – – –

🎼 music: Angevin - Thatched Villagers
🎻 composer: Kevin MacLeod
📄 Creative Commons 4.0 license
🔗 source: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200110
🛠️ editing & production: Bartłomiej Dwornik

– – – – –

The Slavic Legends podcast

Our voices ye hear are but echoes, crafted by a machine. In this episode of the Slavic Legends podcast, we shall journey unto the days when the wise ruler Grakch held sway over the folk. 'Twas in his time that a dreadful monster devoured living offerings every seven days, sending pale terror upon the whole land, from which even the fowls of the air fled.

When the monster breathed its last, the true evil did but awaken to life. Ancient Slavic mythology teacheth us that this is no mere merry fable. It is a merciless tale of lust, the throne, and the darkness that teareth into the soul.

Ye shall understand wherefore one of the brothers raised iron against his own blood, yearning to keep his father's throne solely for himself. False tears of mourning and the lie of the dragon striking before its death deceived the heart of Grakch for a brief time. By his doing, the silvery fish in the rivers perished in silence, and the lush rushes turned into gray slime, dragging down all that dared draw near unto the shore.

Yet there arose a fisherman with a heart harder than granite, who felt no dread of the darkness. He challenged the lord of destruction and made a wager of life and death, having naught left to lose. With his courage and valor he won the favor of the gods, who bestowed their aid upon him, that he might accomplish the impossible task. And so it came to pass. A voice from the heavens proclaimed then that this land should forever belong unto the hero, and the river gleamed once more with pure silver.

Thus doth Slavic mythology conceal truths of the birth of places that to this day bear the names of their deliverers. The tale with which Storyteller Małgorzata regaleth thee today in the Slavic Legends podcast showeth that even when the world turneth into a mire, one righteous man may bring back the sun. Wherefore this place called Kisielice became a safe stronghold, and how the echo of an ancient oath still carrieth across the waves.

00:00 How Patollo assailed the living in Pomesania
00:42 Of the river that breathed sour slime and death
02:08 The valiant fisherman setteth forth into the embrace of the Lord of the Dead
02:52 The grim pact with the deity and a step into the boggy abyss
04:17 The wrath of Perkun and the golden axe cast from the heavens
05:38 The thunderous voice from the clouds and the undoing of the evil curse
06:48 Of noble Kisielice and the eternal watch of the Gardęga

#Kisielice #Patollo #SlavicPantheon #SlavicLegends

– – – – –

🎼 music: Angevin - Thatched Villagers
🎻 composer: Kevin MacLeod
📄 Creative Commons 4.0 license
🔗 source: incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200110
🛠️ editing & production: Bartłomiej Dwornik

– – – – –

The Slavic Legends podcast

Our voices ye hear are but echoes, crafted by a machine.

Our Slavic forefathers handed down a kindred tale. Of Perunik, the son of Perun himself and the Lady of Rain, Perperuna. When the shadows of Veles, lord of the underworld, began to stir trouble in the hearts of men, Perunik descended from the heavens. His sword Samosiecz knew no mercy for falsehood and treason.

Ancient Slavic mythology teacheth that wherever the son of fire passed, there the earth became fruitful, the rivers pure, and the rule just. 'Tis a dynamic tale of the strife betwixt good and evil, which showeth how great a power truth holdeth in a world overcome by chaos. Ye shall learn wherefore the gods turned their faces away, when men began to call upon foreign names and forgot their own roots.

Where doth this golden-fiery weapon hide today? Perunik returned unto the divine peak unto his father, yet his heritage abideth still in the whispers of the wind. Listen then to the tale of honor and the price of oblivion.
