THE VANISHING OF MARIE EMPRESS
Marie Ann Louisa Taylor — known to audiences as Marie Empress — was a rising star of the silent film era. Born in England, she built a successful career in music halls before crossing to American vaudeville and eventually the screen, where her dark beauty and natural charisma made her a consistent box office draw. In the fall of 1919, she sailed to England for personal appearances and film negotiations, then boarded the Cunard steamer Orduna on October 16 for her return to New York. On the evening of October 26, two and a half hours out of Halifax, her stewardess brought dinner to her stateroom and found her in good spirits. Marie ordered sandwiches for 9:30. When the stewardess returned at precisely that time, the room was empty. By morning, it was clear she had never come back — the bed unslept in, the sandwiches untouched, her trunks still aboard. No one had seen her leave. The porthole was locked from the inside and too small to climb through. The passageways and decks were brightly lit and crowded with passengers. How she vanished without a single witness remains unexplained. Whether she fell, jumped, or met with foul play was never determined. Marie Ann Louisa Taylor — known to audiences as Marie Empress — was a rising star of the silent film era. Born in England, she built a successful career in music halls before crossing to American vaudeville and eventually the screen, where her dark beauty and natural charisma made her a consistent box office draw. In the fall of 1919, she sailed to England for personal appearances and film negotiations, then boarded the Cunard steamer Orduna on October 16 for her return to New York. On the evening of October 26, two and a half hours out of Halifax, her stewardess brought dinner to her stateroom and found her in good spirits. Marie ordered sandwiches for 9:30. When the stewardess returned at precisely that time, the room was empty. By morning, it was clear she had never come back — the bed unslept in, the sandwiches untouched, her trunks still aboard. No one had seen her leave. The porthole was locked from the inside and too small to climb through. The passageways and decks were brightly lit and crowded with passengers. How she vanished without a single witness remains unexplained. Whether she fell, jumped, or met with foul play was never determined. The Together Place CBS Radio Mystery Theater — written by Elspeth Eric
Dr. Ed Leahy, the sole physician of the small town of Corbett, enlists his retired nurse Mary Mahaffey to help care for two unusual patients: Mrs. Craven, confined to bed with a thrombosis, and her daughter Rose, a withdrawn young woman of mysterious ailment. When Rose casually mentions a twin sister named Lily — a sister no one knew existed — the doctor and nurse are drawn into something far stranger than a routine house call.
Rose is utterly convinced that Lily is real, living in a realm she calls Kamaloka — the Together Place — a world adjoining our own where souls dwell between lives. She shares Lily's headaches, Lily's dreams, and eventually Lily's pregnancy. When Rose announces that Lily is gravely ill and near death, she herself takes to her bed and dies shortly after — her body wasting away as if in sympathy with her unseen twin.
The truth, known only to Dr. Leahy, is that Rose did have a twin. A second child was born the same night, deformed and sickly, who survived only an hour. Rose had carried the memory of that companion in the womb throughout her entire life — and in death, it seems, went searching for her.
With Rose gone, grief pulls Mrs. Craven toward the same fading. It falls to the remarkable Mary Mahaffey to bring her back — not through medicine, but through the philosophy of Paracelsus: faith, cheerful courage, and hope. The daughter's name was Donna. She was twenty-eight, in nursing school, sharing an apartment with her roommate Angie. And the doll — the doll was just a doll. At first.

Until Donna and Angie started coming home to find it… moved.

Sat up where it had been laid down. Standing where it had been sitting. Arms folded one day. Legs crossed the next. In rooms with the doors shut. In positions a stuffed doll cannot hold without falling over — kneeling. Standing on its own.

Then came the notes. Scraps of parchment paper neither woman owned, scrawled in a child's pencil. Help me. Help Lou— Lou being Angie's fiancé, who had recently moved in.

And then one day they came home and found the doll bleeding. A red splotch on the back of its hand. Three drops on its chest.

That's when they called a medium.

The medium told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a seven-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins, who had died on the property years before. Said she liked the women. Said she wanted to stay.

Donna and Angie — and this is the part that always stops me — said yes.

Lou said no. Lou had hated the doll from the start. And not long after the séance, Lou claimed the doll levitated onto his chest in the night and tried to strangle him.

Days later, he was in Donna's room when something invisible knocked him to the floor. When he stood up, there were seven scratches across his chest — four horizontal, three vertical. They looked more like burns than scratches. They healed in two days.

That's when Donna called a priest. The priest called Ed and Lorraine Warren. And the Warrens — the same investigators who walked into the Amityville house — took one look at Annabelle and said: that is not a little girl. That is something pretending to be one.

The Warrens took the doll home. Put her in a glass case in their occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Hung a sign: Warning: Positively Do Not Open.

And that should have been the end of it.

It wasn't.

A man came to the museum one afternoon. Stood in front of Annabelle's case. Laughed at her. Taunted her. Dared her to do her worst — through the glass, where she couldn't reach him.

Three hours later, he and his girlfriend wrapped their motorcycle around a tree.

He didn't survive.

And Annabelle — Annabelle is just one of them.

There's Robert, in Key West, given to a little boy by a Haitian servant who'd been fired for practicing voodoo in the family's garden. Robert who whispered back to the boy in a voice that wasn't the boy's own. Robert who neighbors swore they saw scurrying window to window when no one was home.

There's Letta — found under the floorboards of an abandoned house in Australia, like somebody had tried to seal him in. A man named Kerry Walton put him in his trunk to drive home, and on the way Kerry says he heard a voice from the back of the car. Letta me out.

There's Harold, sold on eBay, who reportedly killed two people within six months of arriving at his new owner's home.

There's Peggy — a doll so allegedly malevolent that people who watch her on YouTube report nausea, headaches, hallucinations. Reaching, somehow, through the screen.

The daughter's name was Donna. She was twenty-eight, in nursing school, sharing an apartment with her roommate Angie. And the doll — the doll was just a doll. At first.

Until Donna and Angie started coming home to find it… moved.

Sat up where it had been laid down. Standing where it had been sitting. Arms folded one day. Legs crossed the next. In rooms with the doors shut. In positions a stuffed doll cannot hold without falling over — kneeling. Standing on its own.

Then came the notes. Scraps of parchment paper neither woman owned, scrawled in a child's pencil. Help me. Help Lou— Lou being Angie's fiancé, who had recently moved in.

And then one day they came home and found the doll bleeding. A red splotch on the back of its hand. Three drops on its chest.

That's when they called a medium.

The medium told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a seven-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins, who had died on the property years before. Said she liked the women. Said she wanted to stay.

Donna and Angie — and this is the part that always stops me — said yes.

Lou said no. Lou had hated the doll from the start. And not long after the séance, Lou claimed the doll levitated onto his chest in the night and tried to strangle him.

Days later, he was in Donna's room when something invisible knocked him to the floor. When he stood up, there were seven scratches across his chest — four horizontal, three vertical. They looked more like burns than scratches. They healed in two days.

That's when Donna called a priest. The priest called Ed and Lorraine Warren. And the Warrens — the same investigators who walked into the Amityville house — took one look at Annabelle and said: that is not a little girl. That is something pretending to be one.

The Warrens took the doll home. Put her in a glass case in their occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Hung a sign: Warning: Positively Do Not Open.

And that should have been the end of it.

It wasn't.

A man came to the museum one afternoon. Stood in front of Annabelle's case. Laughed at her. Taunted her. Dared her to do her worst — through the glass, where she couldn't reach him.

Three hours later, he and his girlfriend wrapped their motorcycle around a tree.

He didn't survive.

And Annabelle — Annabelle is just one of them.

There's Robert, in Key West, given to a little boy by a Haitian servant who'd been fired for practicing voodoo in the family's garden. Robert who whispered back to the boy in a voice that wasn't the boy's own. Robert who neighbors swore they saw scurrying window to window when no one was home.

There's Letta — found under the floorboards of an abandoned house in Australia, like somebody had tried to seal him in. A man named Kerry Walton put him in his trunk to drive home, and on the way Kerry says he heard a voice from the back of the car. Letta me out.

There's Harold, sold on eBay, who reportedly killed two people within six months of arriving at his new owner's home.

There's Peggy — a doll so allegedly malevolent that people who watch her on YouTube report nausea, headaches, hallucinations. Reaching, somehow, through the screen.

And those are just the ones with names…

Synopsis

The chorus lands the thesis plainly. If we live by the rules Satan sets, we've already chosen the master we serve. This Incorruption release is a full rework of that original song — same lyric, same conviction, rebuilt in a hard rock style with a heavier sound and a harder edge than the acoustic version that sat on a cassette for decades.

She sets the library windows high so the light comes in without the damp, picks the oak for the ceiling beams, and gives every room the grace his money couldn't buy on its own, and the whole time she is building it for herself. On the night the work is finished he drives out to end things, tells her he never once said he loved her, and lays an envelope of cash on the table for services rendered. She won't touch it. She tells him the house belongs to her, that no other woman will ever sit in it without feeling like a trespasser, and that she'll be there forever, and then she asks him to leave because she has something to do. The watchman finds her at six the next morning, hanging from one of the beams she chose. The note she leaves promises that everything alive in her walked into that house at sunrise and stays.The house never opens again. A hundred years of paid grounds crews and heated empty rooms, a thousand acres and a private lake carried on the company books as an asset nobody will touch, because the men who own it know what the library did to the man who built it. She isn't grieving in there. She's keeping the place ready, she's counting the ones who share his name, and she has been hungry for a very long time.

Inspired by "The Avenging Ghost of Kitty Morgan" by CBS Radio Mystery Theater from August 4th, 1978, as heard in the Weird Darkness Retro Radio episode of the same title: https://weirddarkness.com/wdrr0760/She chose the oak for the beams and set the library windows high so the books would keep, and she believed every board of it was going to be hers. On the last night of the work the man who paid for it told her he had never said he loved her, put an envelope of cash on the table, and called it payment for the woman's touch she gave the place. She left the money where it sat. By six the next morning the watchman had found her under the beams she picked out herself, and the house has stood empty and heated and swept for a hundred years since, waiting on the rest of his family. SONG INSPIRATION: On a Thursday night in June of 1948, seventeen-year-old switchboard operator Mary Jane Reed went out on a first date with Stanley Skridla, a twenty-eight-year-old telephone lineman, and the two of them worked through the taverns of Oregon, Illinois. He was found the next morning in a ditch along the local lovers' lane, shot five times. She turned up five days later, two miles away, shot once in the head. Nobody was ever charged, and the case file emptied out somewhere in the decades after. When her brother finally got the grave opened fifty-seven years on, the forensic anthropologist his family hired reported that the skull in the casket had belonged to someone else. Hers has never been found. The roadhouse where the two of them spent that last evening is still pouring drinks, and the people who work there have plenty to say about the jukebox. He was found the next morning in a ditch along the local lovers' lane, shot five times. She turned up five days later, two miles away, shot once in the head. Nobody was ever charged, and the case file emptied out somewhere in the decades after. When her brother finally got the grave opened fifty-seven years on, the forensic anthropologist his family hired reported that the skull in the casket had belonged to someone else. SONG SYNOPSIS: Twenty years back, a boy stood on a weathered dock at Lake Weeping Tree while his uncle pointed at the water, and something rose from it and slipped under before anyone else turned to look. The uncle spent the rest of his life as the family punchline — the man who swore a monster lived in the lake — and took the ridicule to his grave. Now the boy is grown, tongs in hand at the family cookout, grilling burgers and franks at that same water's edge and watching every ripple. His brother rolls his eyes. His nephew Billy tugs at his shorts and asks what he really saw. He tells the boy about Cthulhu — the cosmic sleeper beneath the ocean, and the smaller thing that found a path inland to this lake — then holds a hot dog out over the surface. A tentacled face breaks the water without a sound, wraps a slick arm around Billy's hand, takes the hot dog, belches, and sinks back into the dark. Billy has his proof now. So does the man nobody believed. One day Billy will be the crazy uncle too, and he'll have earned it.

SONG SYNOPSIS: Twenty years back, a boy stood on a weathered dock at Lake Weeping Tree while his uncle pointed at the water, and something rose from it and slipped under before anyone else turned to look. The uncle spent the rest of his life as the family punchline — the man who swore a monster lived in the lake — and took the ridicule to his grave. Now the boy is grown, tongs in hand at the family cookout, grilling burgers and franks at that same water's edge and watching every ripple. His brother rolls his eyes. His nephew Billy tugs at his shorts and asks what he really saw. He tells the boy about Cthulhu — the cosmic sleeper beneath the ocean, and the smaller thing that found a path inland to this lake — then holds a hot dog out over the surface.
