Her involvement with Lift Orlando began during the organization’s earliest community meetings, where residents were invited to imagine what their neighborhood could become.

For Tangia, that vision became deeply personal. Her daughter Mimi, born prematurely and facing significant medical and developmental challenges, needed safe and accessible places to play and exercise. Yet the neighborhood park Tangia had loved as a child no longer provided what families like hers needed. That experience helped fuel Tangia’s advocacy for the transformation of Lake Lorna Doone Park into an inclusive community space where children with different abilities and needs could play safely.

Tangia also speaks candidly about the complexities of neighborhood revitalization and nonprofit community development. She and Keyania discuss why resident voices must remain central to community transformation, the importance of recognizing the people whose unpaid advocacy helped create change, concerns about displacement and development, and why meaningful partnerships require honesty and accountability alongside investment.

This conversation is a powerful look at grassroots leadership and the often-unseen people behind community transformation in Orlando.

In this episode:
• Tangia’s history in Orlando’s West Lakes community
• The transformation of Lake Lorna Doone Park
• Advocacy for children with disabilities and accessible recreation
• How Mimi inspired Tangia’s community involvement
• The unseen sacrifices behind grassroots advocacy
• Resident voices in neighborhood revitalization
• The relationship between residents, nonprofits, businesses, and community partners
• Why acknowledgment and accountability matter in community development
• Concerns about development, land, and preserving neighborhood legacy
• How one resident’s advocacy can impact generations of families

The Lift Effect, powered by Lift Orlando, shares the real people, real stories, and real impact behind the work of strengthening the historic neighborhoods surrounding Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

When we lift one, we lift all.

If this episode inspired you, don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and Share to help us spread stories of hope, leadership, and community transformation.

Learn more about Lift and the work being done at: liftorlando.org
----------------------------------
Podcast Produced by Hi Hello Labs: Website: https://www.hihellolabs.com/

The Lift Effect is powered by Lift Orlando, where residents, businesses, and community leaders come together to strengthen Orlando's historic neighborhoods.

Because every thriving community is built by people who choose to invest in one another.

If today's conversation inspired you, we'd love to invite you to be part of the story. In the Light of Giants

What does generational legacy look like when it becomes community action?

In this episode of The Lift Effect Podcast, host Keyania Johnson sits down with Imani Brooks, Event Facilities Manager at Lift Orlando and a third-generation resident of Orlando’s historic 32805 community, for a powerful conversation about community development, generational legacy, nonprofit leadership, motherhood, disability advocacy, access to resources, education, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Imani grew up surrounded by community leadership. Her grandfather, Rufus C. Brooks, was an educator, civil rights advocate, NAACP leader, and respected figure in Orlando whose commitment to service left a lasting impact on the community. Today, Imani is continuing that legacy while discovering what it means to build one of her own.

But her understanding of access and opportunity became deeply personal after the birth of her son, Xavier.

After experiencing serious complications shortly after birth, spending weeks in the NICU, and later receiving a cerebral palsy diagnosis, Xavier’s journey sent Imani into a world of specialists, therapies, education, early childhood resources, and advocacy. Through that experience, she saw firsthand how dramatically a child’s future can be shaped by access to the right resources, support systems, and people.

That experience now informs how she approaches her work with Lift Orlando and families throughout the community.

In this episode, Keyania and Imani discuss:
• Growing up as a third-generation resident of Orlando’s 32805 community
• The legacy of educator and civil rights advocate Rufus C.

Axiom Bank’s Goldwyn Avenue location occupies the same building once home to Washington Shores Savings and Loan, Florida’s first Black-owned financial institution, founded in 1963. They became a space for honest conversations, connection, stress relief, and support.

Today, the organization combines community cycling with mental health resources through its Cycle of Support program, which provides eligible participants with at least six weeks of free therapy.

Demetri and Kieron discuss the stigma that can still surround therapy, especially in communities where seeking mental health support has historically been misunderstood.
