In this episode, we visit Kathy Grayson at The Hole in New York, the first and flagship location of the gallery she founded in June 2011.The gallery's opening was anything but smooth. The space had barely been renovated when a major rainstorm hit, sending water pouring into the gallery during the inaugural exhibition by FriendsWithYou. Despite the chaotic beginning, The Hole has grown into three galleries - two in New York and one in Los Angeles.
Kathy's journey into the art world began long before she became a gallerist. While still in college, she started an independent gallery project of her own at the college. It wasn't an easy path, but her persistence paid off. Her first exhibition consisted entirely of the email correspondence it had taken to organize the show. The project sparked controversy, and she was even reported for publishing private communications. Ultimately, the head of the museum defended the work, describing it as a piece of conceptual art, allowing Kathy to remain in college.
After graduating, she joined Deitch Projects as a receptionist and was eventually promoted. Immersed in New York's art scene, she spent her days working and her nights surrounded by artists, often arriving late to the office. Rather than being fired, those experiences eventually became the subject of a book.Today, The Hole is known for championing emerging artists, with many of its exhibitions marking an artist's very first gallery show.

Upstairs is where Erik paints his vibrant and colorful paintings, while downstairs is filled with sculptures, skateboards, books, and smaller works. The studio offers a glimpse into the many different references, ideas, and objects that surround his practice and have become part of his visual world.
Erik has been painting for over 25 years and is known for his distinctive, cartoon-like compositions that riff on traditional genres such as portraiture and still life. His work draws inspiration from American subcultures, including psychedelia, underground comic books, skate culture, and music, as well as from historic modern painters. He combines these influences into dense, playful compositions filled with color, characters, symbols, and unexpected details.
In this episode, we talk about the relationship between making art and the market surrounding it, and how the commercial side of the art world can influence the way an artist chooses to spend their time. Erik reflects on how his priorities have changed over the years and how, at this point in his career, he finds himself spending more time thinking, looking, and observing than he has in a long time. We talk about the importance of slowing down, allowing ideas to develop, and finding time to look at art without necessarily having to produce something in return.

In this episode, we are welcomed into the New York home of Carole Server and her husband, Oliver. Carole is a retired Wall Street executive. She’s a Trustee at Fountainhead, serves as Chair of the Board of Rema Hort Mann Fund and recently researched and launched The Artist Living With Cancer Grant.
Carole and Oliver have been building their current art collection for the past 15-16 years. While the collection includes video and photography, its true focus is on painting and sculpture, with a particular passion for painting. Over the past five years, they have concentrated primarily on acquiring works by mid-career artists.
Today, their collection comprises more than 800 works. They buy art they genuinely love and want to live with, which is why they reinstall and rehang their home approximately once a year, allowing the collection to evolve alongside them.
More than 50% of the artists in their collection are women, and around 35% are artists of color. This was never a deliberate collecting strategy - it simply reflects the artists and works they were naturally drawn to.
For Carole and Oliver, building personal relationships with artists is an essential part of collecting. They regularly visit artists' studios, and around 95% of the artists in their collection are people they have met through studio visits.
They also believe that collecting comes with a responsibility to support artists beyond acquiring their work. They frequently open their home for collection visits and generously lend works to museum exhibitions around the world, seeing it as an important way to share the artists they believe in with a broader audience.

In this episode, we visit AIKO in her incredible New York studio. Her residency offers breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the 9/11 Memorial, and the Statue of Liberty from the 28th floor of Four World Trade Center.
AIKO is a Japanese street artist renowned for her unique ability to blend Western art movements with traditional Eastern techniques and craftsmanship. She is also known for her large-scale public artworks, which have been installed in cities including Rome, Shanghai, and Brooklyn.
Originally from Tokyo, AIKO has been creating art since she was just two years old. Pursuing a career as an artist wasn't considered a conventional path for a young woman in Japan, where societal expectations often encouraged women to become devoted wives and mothers instead.
After graduating from art school in Tokyo, she left Japan at the age of 21. At the time, she had developed a strong interest in filmmaking and began making films of her own. She was also fascinated by music videos and creative culture from overseas. Without the internet, the outside world felt distant, but she sensed that exciting things were happening abroad - and she knew she had to experience them for herself.In 1997, the same year she graduated, AIKO moved to New York without knowing anyone. By chance, she discovered a vibrant creative community that welcomed her.
As a woman, breaking into the art world wasn't easy. On top of that, she had to learn English from scratch, which made life in New York especially challenging. To immerse herself in the culture, she started going out to clubs almost every night. Music became a gateway to new friendships, and she quickly found a sense of belonging.
It was through this scene that she was introduced to street art and graffiti - a world that would ultimately define her artistic career.

In this episode we go to New York to meet renowned art collector Hubert Neumann, whose collection is widely regarded as one of the most important private collections of modern and contemporary art in the United States.
Over several decades, Neumann has assembled an extraordinary collection featuring artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, and Robert Rauschenberg. Rather than simply collecting artworks, he has cultivated close relationships with many of the artists themselves, supporting their careers and acquiring much of the collection directly during their lifetimes.

Among other things, we’ll explore a piece by Julian Schnabel, a portrait of Jeffrey himself. We’ll also talk about the artist Sickid and how Jeffrey first discovered his work. Driving along the 101 freeway near the Echo Park area, Jeffrey noticed a striking figurative graffiti billboard takeover unlike anything he had seen before. At the bottom, it was signed “ Sickid.” Intrigued, he started asking around, hoping to meet the artist. Later, during a visit to Ozzy Juarez, he unexpectedly met Sickid in person and immediately said, “We’re going to do an exhibition.” A few months later, they opened a show together, which became an instant sensation, with lines stretching around the block. They are now planning another exhibition in New York City next year.

In this episode, we visit gallerist Davida Nemeroff at Night Gallery in Los Angeles - one of the city’s most influential platforms for emerging contemporary artists.Founded in 2010 by Davida Nemeroff, Night Gallery began in a modest strip mall storefront in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, where exhibition openings famously took place late at night between 10pm and 2am. What started as an experimental, artist-driven space quickly became an important part of Los Angeles’ growing contemporary art scene.
In 2013, the gallery moved to its current location near LA’s Downtown Arts District and has since expanded into a 14,000 square foot space, allowing the gallery to host up to three exhibitions simultaneously. Today, Night Gallery presents around 21 exhibitions annually.In this episode, we talk about the unique character of the Los Angeles art scene - a city filled with countless galleries, many of which remain largely undiscovered by the wider public. In this episode, we visit artist Andrew Schoultz at his studio in Los Angeles. Andrew comes from a grabiti background and started painting grabiti in the 1980s. He attended art school
in San Francisco, but grabiti was always what attracted him the most. Over time, he became increasingly engaged with the social and political climate in San Francisco. While he always loved the act of writing a name, he eventually wanted what he painted in the streets to carry more meaning than simply putting up his own tag. He began questioning the narcissistic aspect of grabiti and instead wanted to create work that addressed social issues and served a larger purpose.
In this conversation, we explore his love for both grabiti and skateboarding, and the strong parallels between the two.
We also talk about the importance of finding balance in life - not letting art consume everything. Life is bigger than just making your own work, and having balance ultimately makes you a better artist.We also talk about his passion for painting murals and being out in the streets. For Andrew, one of the most meaningful parts of creating a mural is connecting with the people around it. It’s about becoming part of the community that will ultimately live with the piece long after it’s finished.

In this episode, we visit artist Mira Dancy at Night Gallery in Los Angeles, where she is currently presenting a new body of work.
The exhibition is rooted in the 2025 fires in the Palisades area, during which all the houses surrounding her home and studio burned down. Miraculously, her own house survived, and she felt a certain responsibility to bear witness to the devastation simply because she was still there to observe it.
Out of this experience, a series of new works emerged. The paintings depict places Mira had a connection to both before and after the fire - places her almost magical dog led her to during their daily walks through the area. The dog would often stop at particularly beautiful spots, and once Mira began noticing this, she started bringing a sketchbook along to capture the scenes.
Those sketches eventually evolved into the works now on display, focusing on the beauty that still existed amid the devastation. For Mira, painting these works became a kind of love letter to Altadena.

Wes is an American visual artist whose works explore themes such as mortality and the human condition through a personal repertoire of motifs drawn from pop culture, Americana, and imagery of skulls and skeletons. His studio functions not only as Wes’ workplace, but also as a kind of museum dedicated to his own works. At a young age, Wes received an important piece of advice from the artist Donald Baechler: to keep as many of his own works as possible. He took that advice to heart, and whenever his works appear at auction, he often buys them back himself. His earlier works also serve as a source of inspiration for his new creations.
In addition to being a recognized international artist, Wes is also an enthusiastic collector. His collection includes works by artists such as Danny Fox, Mike Kelley, Günther Förg, Willem de Kooning, Eddie Martinez, and Damien Hirst, who has also been his mentor and taught Wes an incredible amount.
