That world is changing fast, and in this episode we take an honest, practical look at how.Point-of-care diagnostics have quietly moved decision-making out of the reference laboratory and into the exam room itself. Compact analyzers, rapid antigen tests, portable ultrasound, in-clinic PCR, and chairside blood gas are now everyday tools in modern companion animal practice. But how well do we actually use them? Where do they help most? And where do they still have real limitations that can trip up even experienced clinicians?Over the next 13 to 14 minutes, we walk through the point-of-care toolkit in plain language: SNAP tests, ELISA platforms, rapid antigen and antibody assays, PCR and point-of-care PCR, blood glucose, blood gas, lactate, coagulation, urinalysis, fecal antigen tests, and portable imaging including AFAST and TFAST protocols. For each one, we cover how it works, when to use it, and where it fits alongside reference laboratory testing. We also ground everything in realistic cases: a vomiting Labrador with suspected pancreatitis, a parvovirus puppy, a diabetic cat in ketoacidosis, a trauma patient in shock, a hunting dog with tick-borne disease, and a cat in respiratory distress. Each case shows how point-of-care testing changes clinical decision-making in real time.We finish with a look at where diagnostics are heading next, including AI-assisted interpretation, wearable monitoring, and cloud-connected analyzers, and why ongoing veterinary continuing education matters more than ever. For a deeper dive, explore the full companion webinar, 10 POC Tests Flying Under the Radar.

<podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3.srt" type="application/x-subrip" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3.txt" type="text/plain" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3/a3cc41c5-2c3e-4589-a927-c8f6a94f5ce3.vtt" type="text/vtt" language="en"/><itunes:author>Ethan Ward</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Every experienced veterinarian remembers the days when almost every meaningful blood result meant sending a sample to the reference lab and waiting hours, sometimes days, before making a real clinical decision.
