What began with theater, school life, and a student council campaign soon became something much bigger. Mario found himself distributing political propaganda, joining demonstrations, confronting police repression, and becoming deeply involved in a generation that believed it could transform Mexico. He remembers the anger against President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, the presence of government forces around schools, encounters with violent groups, and his later belief that government infiltrators had entered his own political circle. Mario was in Veracruz when the massacre of October 2, 1968, took place in Tlatelolco. He recalls learning the news that night, breaking down in tears, and realizing that if he had remained in Mexico City, he might have been there himself. More than five decades later, Mario looks back without romanticizing the movement. He reflects on why his generation idealized the Cuban Revolution, communism, and socialism, how his political beliefs changed over time, why he became disillusioned with parts of the political left, and whether the generation of ’68 truly succeeded in building the better Mexico they once dreamed of. This is a firsthand reflection on youth, rebellion, repression, political idealism, disillusionment, democracy, and the lasting impact of one of the most defining movements in modern Mexican history. Years later, she faced rejection, family control, the loss of her mother, and the overwhelming responsibility of raising her daughters on her own. Working as a housekeeper, she experienced both the kindness of strangers and the humiliation of others. Despite everything, she never stopped fighting for her family and found the strength to keep going even in her darkest moments. This is a story of resilience, sacrifice, and unconditional love for her children.
