Peter says, “When I studied my Bible as a kid in Wisconsin, I was always puzzled and even a bit disturbed by the way in which those prophets would almost invariably shmoosh together what seemed to me like very different offenses: sexual immorality, worship of false gods, and economic oppression. Is God equally pissed off about all these things? I asked myself: how very strange that God can’t focus His anger a little more precisely. Or maybe God enjoys being pissed off in general. As I say, it was all rather confusing to a teenaged farm boy.Now that I am in my eighth decade, I think I understand these things a little better. In the first place, I understand that “God is angry” is the prophets’ way of saying something is deeply wrong. In other words, you don’t have to believe in an angry God in order to appreciate prophetic critique. And second, I understand that grouping together sexual violation, religious profanation, and economic exploitation is exactly the right way to frame moral rot at the heart of any nation, as these three forms of oppression usually run together.”. His is a politics rooted not in triangulation or compromise, but in unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the working class.Jeff Macker joins Sharon Kyle and Dick Price of the LA Progressive as they discuss his political activism and the future of the United States as it turns decidedly more authoritarian Mackler may not be a household name, but his life’s work spans from the streets of labor picket lines to the frontlines of the movement to free Mumia Abu-Jamal. He’s been an educator, a climate organizer, a political prisoner advocate, and a two-time presidential candidate. His vision is not simply to reform the system—but to replace it entirely. To read more content written by Jeff Mackler on the LA Progressive go to:https://www.laprogressive.com/author/jeff-macklerPlease share this podcast

Get full access to LA Progressive at laprogressive.substack.com/subscribe</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>1596</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="https://d3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net/t_rss_itunes_square_1400/images.spreaker.com/original/73da14319c6b8279f047a056f5a48395.jpg"/><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Breaking the Cycle: Why White People Must Help Dismantle Racism to Save American Democracy

Frank Joyce and Elizabeth Woodson joined Dick and Sharon of the LA Progressive to talk about the role that white people MUST play in creating democracy for all. They are both dedicated to dismantling racism. When speaking of herself and Frank, Elizabeth said, “We are not of the same gender or generation. But we have two things in common. We are both white as defined by the racial categories entrenched long ago to sustain white male power. And we’re both dedicated to confronting and repairing the harms of whiteness, settler colonialism, enslavement, segregation and other aspects of the enduring racial hierarchy within ourselves and our white communities.” In our interview, Elizabeth explains white racialization and the toll it takes. Frank’s journey was initiated by the 1960s Black Freedom struggle; Elizabeth’s in 2014 by the Black Lives Matter movement. Both Frank and Elizabeth agree that, in order to see a more perfect union, we can’t continue to do what we have always done. They say that that only perpetuates the cyclical pattern but doing something different might lead to real and lasting change. For a very long time U.S. efforts at social change can be described as pursuing a pendulum theory of change. The idea is that our history see-saws between good times and bad. That’s how it is and how it will always be is what many think as if it’s an inescapable cage. But Frank Joyce and Elizabeth Woodson have another idea and they share it with Dick and Sharon. One quiet but powerful force distorting how young people understand the world is reductionist reasoning and erasure of marginalized perspectives in the teaching of history.Dick Price and Sharon Kyle invited Nora Lester Murad to discuss her first hand knowlege of the erasure of Palestinians in Israel. Nora is the author of the award-winning young adult novel, Ida in the Middle. A story about a Palestinian-American girl who eats a magic olive that takes her to the life she might have had in her parents’ village near Jerusalem. An important coming of age story that explores identity, place, voice, and belonging. Nora, herself is Jewish, raised in a Jewish family in Southern California but spent decades living in the West Bank with her Palestinian husband where they raised three daughters. She now lives in Massachusetts where she promotes social justice education and activism. Nora shares K-12 teaching and school advocacy resources at www.IdaInTheMiddle.com and can be reached through her blog at www.NoraLesterMurad.com.Dick, Nora, and Sharon discuss the importance of ethnic studies. They discuss what happens to democracy when children learn from a curriculum that reduces history to a timeline of presidents and wars and omits the voices of Indigenous people, Palestinians, enslaved Africans, immigrants, workers, and women. At first glance, it might sound like good teaching—distilling complex events into simple cause-and-effect stories. But in practice, reductionist history oversimplifies the past, flattens conflict, erases marginalized voices, and prepares students to obey rather than question. In doing so, it shapes not just what students know—but how they think, act, and vote. Please share and subscribe. Bill Astor was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. In this conversation with Dick Price, himself a Vietnam Veteran, the two military veterans reflect on two decades of military service and their participation in a system deeply embedded in America’s military-industrial complex. While Bill Astor never directly engaged in violence, he critically examines the paradoxes of serving in an institution that preaches peace through overwhelming firepower. Drawing on his experiences and historical scholarship, he critiques America's reliance on military force as a default solution to global problems—from Vietnam to Iraq to Gaza. Dick Price, on the other hand, is a combat veteran. He returned from Vietnam an anti-war protestor. The two veterans challenge the mythology of American exceptionalism and question whether the U.S. has become the very "evil empire" it once opposed, with an ever-expanding global military presence and an insatiable appetite for war cloaked in the language of defense and democracy. This conversation was launched as a result of an essay written by William J. Has he taken a page from Hitler’s playbook? It appears that Trump is bullying America's legal system. Nine of America’s largest and most powerful law firms have surrendered to President Donald Trump’s illegal threats. They demeaned themselves by agreeing to provide an astonishing $940 million in free legal services to causes chosen by Trump and the firms while also agreeing to discontinue their DEI policies. Fortunately, other firms refused and are fighting back. Trump bullied the legal system by following Hitler's playbook. The most ominous parallel is to Nazi Germany, where Adolf Hitler successfully bent the German legal system to his will, with the complicity of German lawyers and judges, just as Trump bullied America's legal system.Dick Price and Sharon Kyle interview Stephen Rohde —a writer, lecturer, and political activist. For almost 50 years, Stephen Rohde practiced civil rights, civil liberties, and intellectual property law and has won significant First Amendment victories in state and federal appellate courts. She was taken away in handcuffs, a highly unusual maneuver–specifically, Judge Dugan was handcuffed and arrested by FBI agents at the courthouse where she presides, during court hours. The arrest was conducted publicly within the courthouse premises. She was led out in handcuffs, a move that has drawn criticism from legal professionals and observers who questioned the necessity and manner of the arrest.Because this arrest is raising ire in the legal community, we asked former judge Bill Blum to give us a sense of whether the Trump administration's behavior was unwarranted. This support was not met without criticism or opposition, as was recently reported here at the LA Progressive. But, like almost anything, USAID was a complex organization. Matt is a public health professional who has had more than a dozen years of experience working with the organization. The recent dismantling of USAID by the Trump administration will impact millions of lives and perhaps affect international stability and goodwill toward the United States. Rohde maintains that throughout his rise to power, Trump has recruited obedient enablers to do his bidding. He says that Trump’s henchmen have compliantly cleared the way for him to lie, steal, and conspire to get whatever he wants. The three, Stephen, Dick and Sharon discuss whether there is evidence to suggest that Trump has enlisted the six conservative Republican justices on the United States Supreme Court to grant him the freedom to brazenly break the law with absolute impunity. Rohde, who practiced law for almost 50 years and is a former president of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, says while Trump is rolling out his authoritarian Executive Orders and dangerous new policies, it is important to understand exactly what the Court did and how Trump 2.0 will unfold without one of the traditional guardrails on which our democracy depends – the deterrent threat of criminal prosecution. It is generally responsible for the affairs of the Democratic Party including planning how to support Democratic Party candidates running for local, state, and federal office across the nation. The election to choose the next chairperson of the DNC is anticipated to take place on February 1, 2025. But, before the February election, one must first become a candidate.Former 2024 presidential candidate, Marianne Williamson, has written a letter to the members of the DNC announcing her desire to serve the party as chair of the DNC. She is also asking them to sign a petition that would begin the process of making that possible. The signing of the petition is not an endorsement. It simply allows potential candidates to have an opportunity to make their case with the DNC. The LA Progressive supports democracy and democratic processes. We urge any DNC member reading this to sign the petition. We also ask all readers to share this message. Here is Marianne's letter directed to members of the Democratic National Council, which will elect a new leader in early February to reinvent the Party, not merely rebuild it on old models:This year’s election of a DNC Chair feels different than in past years. Before now, the party had faced defeats to be sure. But our playbook still basically worked. The waters were turbulent at times, but our ship was steady. This year, the party faces a more critical problem than we have ever faced before. The MAGA phenomenon now challenges the very way that politics are done in America, and the traditional tool kit of party organizing will not be enough to meet the moment.Renewing the Democratic PartyRead MorePresident Trump has ushered in an age of political theatre – a collective adrenaline rush that has enabled him to not only move masses of people into his camp but also masses of people away from ours. It does not serve us to underestimate the historic nature of what he has achieved. In fact, it’s important that we recognize the psychological and emotional dimensions of Trump’s appeal. We need to understand it to create the energy to counter it. MAGA is a distinctly 21st century political movement and it will not be defeated by a 20th century tool kit. Data analysis, fundraising, field organizing, and beefed-up technology – while all are important - will not be enough to prepare the way for Democratic victory in 2024 and beyond.Read Marianne's petition to DNC members (only DNC members can vote, but all can read)That’s why I have decided to run for DNC Chair this year. Henry believes that for decades, neoliberalism—a predatory form of capitalism—has waged a relentless war on the welfare state, dismantled the public sphere, and eroded the common good. Disguised in the rhetoric of freedom, it elevates market logic to the status of a governing ideology, insisting that every aspect of society must conform to the demands of economic activity. In practice, neoliberalism concentrates wealth in the hands of a financial elite while celebrating unrestrained self-interest, extreme individualism, deregulation, and privatization. It reduces citizenship to consumerism and strips public life of its collective purpose, creating a society where everything is commodified, yet nothing of real value is safeguarded. Within this framework, the devastating social costs of its policies—ranging from systemic racism and militarism to staggering inequality—are not merely tolerated but normalized. Neoliberalism is a systemic force of political, economic, and cultural violence, fostering despair while obliterating any vision of justice, solidarity, or care. The 2008 financial crisis laid bare the catastrophic failures of this system, exposing its inherent corruption, its indifference to human suffering, and the complicity of the Democratic Party in preserving the status quo. This was no anomaly but a revelation of a deeply entrenched order that privileges markets and whiteness over life itself. Between 2020 and 2023, the Covid-19 pandemic further stripped neoliberalism of its veneer. Her research pursues three complementary lines of inquiry. The first interrogates the transnational entanglements of U.S. capitalist racism, anticommunism, and antiblack racial oppression. The second excavates twentieth-century Black anticapitalist intellectual thought, theory, and praxis. Burden-Stelly’s third area of focus examines theories and discourses of economic development in the African diaspora.Sharon Kyle of the LA Progressive sat down with Burden-Stelly to discuss racial-capitalism, a concept that grounds the history of capitalism in the extraction of social and economic value from people of marginalized racial identities, especially Black people. The concept of racial capitalism asserts that racialized exploitation and capital accumulation are mutually reinforcing. Burden-Stelly has published work that appears in journals including Small Axe, Monthly Review, Souls, Du Bois Review, Socialism & Democracy, International Journal of Africana Studies and the LA Progressive.https://www.charisseburdenstelly.com/ You can find more LA Progressive content here: https://www.laprogressive.com/author/charisse-burden-stellyhttps://www.laprogressive.com/

Get full access to LA Progressive at laprogressive.substack.com/subscribe

<itunes:author>LA Progressive</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Charisse Burden-Stelly is a critical Black Studies scholar of political theory, political economy, intellectual history, and political and historical sociology.

Get full access to LA Progressive at laprogressive.substack.com/subscribe</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>1431</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="https://d3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net/t_rss_itunes_square_1400/images.spreaker.com/original/f5e4003dffa774960b27c589057cc338.jpg"/><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Dick and Sharon Discuss Election Results

It’s the day after election day, USA 2024, and Dick and Sharon are weary. They’re weary of the pervasive misogyny coloring the current political landscape—a hue that now stains even the nation’s highest offices.
