Please help me in supporting the Tourette Association of America. This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the age of 6, and I am now 37 years old. During my teenage years, my symptoms were very challenging — I had loud hooting and shouting noises that were hard to control. When I asked my parents if I could still go out to places like movie theaters and restaurants, they always said yes. My father, in particular, was a major influence on me. He taught me from a young age to be my own advocate — to be proud of who I am and not to hide from the world because of my condition. Whenever someone would comment on my tics or make rude remarks, my father encouraged me to confidently explain: “This is who I am. This is what I have. If it bothers you, you are free to go somewhere else. But I am staying here and enjoying myself.” Because of my father’s guidance, I learned early on to stand up for myself with dignity and strength.Tourette Syndrome has impacted my life in many ways. At one point, a former doctor had me on high doses of anti-psychotic medications, which left me feeling like a zombie — constantly tired, unable to concentrate, and struggling with severe hand tremors. Thankfully, we found a new doctor who truly understands me and helps manage my condition better today.I currently work as a cashier at a retail store in Houston, Texas. Sometimes, you might see me struggling a little with tasks like bagging items, especially fragile ones, due to the shakiness in my hands. If I ask for assistance, I truly appreciate your patience and understanding — even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.Living with Tourette’s is a bit like having hiccups. Even when you try to hold it back, your body eventually forces it out. You can’t always control when a tic happens, and trying to suppress it only builds tension until it must be released. But always remember: I have Tourette Syndrome. Tourette Syndrome does not have me.💬 To anyone out there living with Tourette Syndrome: You are not alone. There are support groups and communities that can help you feel connected and empowered. Please don’t isolate yourself. Get out into the world — go to restaurants, enjoy public spaces. If someone makes a comment or a face, confidently tell them, “I have Tourette’s. This is part of who I am, and I cannot help it.”According to the Tourette Association of America: Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a condition of the nervous system that causes people to have “tics” — sudden, repetitive movements, twitches, or sounds that they cannot easily control. Just like hiccups, tics may be temporarily suppressed but must eventually happen.

Get full access to Adam Farris at adamfarris.substack.com/subscribe

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/adam-farris-podcast--6615564/support.

Stay Connected

Follow my journey, support my advocacy, and learn more about my work by visiting adamfarris.net. Together, we can make a difference!

<podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237.srt" type="application/x-subrip" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237.txt" type="text/plain" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237/5b1e236c-435d-45f8-afe9-d1bec71c1237.vtt" type="text/vtt" language="en"/><itunes:author>Adam Farris</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Hi, my name is Adam Farris, and I have Tourette Syndrome — but Tourette Syndrome does NOT have me.Each year, Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month runs from May 15th to June 15th. We’ve been misunderstood. Labeled. Interrupted. As someone who advocates for inclusion and believes in the power of unique abilities, this month holds a special meaning for me. Since NDEAM first began in 1988, it has encouraged conversations about inclusion, accessibility, and the importance of ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to succeed. Today, 80 years later, that message is more important than ever. Inclusion Creates Stronger Workplaces Inclusion is not just a policy — it’s a practice that empowers people to reach their full potential. When workplaces are inclusive, they benefit from a wide range of perspectives, ideas, and talents. People with disabilities bring creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills that strengthen teams and inspire others to think differently. A Sense of Belonging True inclusion means more than just hiring people with disabilities, it’s about creating a sense of belonging. When individuals feel respected, supported, and valued for who they are, they can thrive both personally and professionally. Belonging helps build stronger relationships, better teamwork, and a culture where everyone feels they matter. The Benefits of Inclusion Companies that embrace disability inclusion see measurable results, including higher employee retention, better decision-making, and greater innovation. When employees feel seen and heard, they’re more engaged, more productive, and more likely to stay long-term. Inclusion is not just the right thing to do, it’s also smart business. Moving Forward Together, As we celebrate 80 years of NDEAM, let’s continue to build workplaces that welcome and support people of all abilities. Let’s focus on what people can do, rather than what they can’t. Every person has something valuable to contribute, and when we work together with understanding and compassion, we can create a world where everyone belongs. Let’s Keep the Conversation Going National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a reminder that inclusion should be celebrated all year long, not just in October. Together, we can continue to raise awareness, inspire change, and build communities where people with disabilities are recognized for their strengths and achievements.

Stay Connected Follow my journey, support my advocacy, and learn more about my work by visiting adamfarris.net Together, we can make a difference!

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/adam-farris-podcast--6615564/support.

Stay Connected

Follow my journey, support my advocacy, and learn more about my work by visiting adamfarris.net. Together, we can make a difference!

<podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189.srt" type="application/x-subrip" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189.txt" type="text/plain" language="en"/><podcast:transcript url="https://transcription.spreaker.com/starship/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189/0336d864-2a20-417b-aef8-1252b4e4d189.vtt" type="text/vtt" language="en"/><itunes:author>Adam Farris</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>https://adamfarris.net/blog/ndeamadamfarris

As someone who advocates for inclusion and believes in the power of unique abilities, this month holds a special meaning for me.Since NDEAM first began in 1988, it has encouraged conversations about inclusion, accessibility, and the importance of ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to succeed. Today, 80 years later, that message is more important than ever.Inclusion is not just a policy — it’s a practice that empowers people to reach their full potential. When workplaces are inclusive, they benefit from a wide range of perspectives, ideas, and talents. People with disabilities bring creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills that strengthen teams and inspire others to think differently.True inclusion means more than just hiring people with disabilities, it’s about creating a sense of belonging. When individuals feel respected, supported, and valued for who they are, they can thrive both personally and professionally. Belonging helps build stronger relationships, better teamwork, and a culture where everyone feels they matter.Companies that embrace disability inclusion see measurable results, including higher employee retention, better decision-making, and greater innovation. When employees feel seen and heard, they’re more engaged, more productive, and more likely to stay long-term. Inclusion is not just the right thing to do, it’s also smart business. As we celebrate 80 years of NDEAM, let’s continue to build workplaces that welcome and support people of all abilities. Let’s focus on what people can do, rather than what they can’t. Every person has something valuable to contribute, and when we work together with understanding and compassion, we can create a world where everyone belongs.National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a reminder that inclusion should be celebrated all year long, not just in October. During my teenage years, my symptoms were very challenging — I had loud hooting and shouting noises that were hard to control.

When I asked my parents if I could still go out to places like movie theaters and restaurants, they always said yes. My father, in particular, was a major influence on me. He taught me from a young age to be my own advocate, to be proud of who I am and not to hide from the world because of my condition. Whenever someone would comment on my tics or make rude remarks, my father encouraged me to confidently explain:

"This is who I am. This is what I have. If it bothers you, you are free to go somewhere else. But I am staying here and enjoying myself."

Because of my father's guidance, I learned early on to stand up for myself with dignity and strength.
Tourette Syndrome has impacted my life in many ways. At one point, a former doctor had me on high doses of anti-psychotic medications, which left me feeling like a zombie — constantly tired, unable to concentrate, and struggling with severe hand tremors. Thankfully, we found a new doctor who truly understands me and helps manage my condition better today.

I currently work as a cashier at a retail store in Houston, Texas. Sometimes, you might see me struggling a little with tasks like bagging items, especially fragile ones, due to the shakiness in my hands. I had loud hooting and shouting noises. When I asked my parents if I could go out to public places like movie theaters and restaurants, they said yes. Whenever someone asked me about the noises or made a rude comment, I would just explain to them that this is who I am and this is what I have. If they would like to go somewhere else, then they can, but I am staying here and enjoying myself. Tourette Syndrome has affected me in many ways. One of my former doctors put me on a lot of high-dose anti-psychotic medications for a long time, which then made me like a zombie pretty much throughout the day. I was sleeping too much and was not able to concentrate because of the medications I was on. Eventually, this made my hands shake really badly. We switched doctors and my doctor now is really great! I also work at a retail store here in Houston, Texas as a cashier. Sometimes you may see me struggling at work. I may ask someone to help me out with bagging or help me bag the breakable items. Please respect my request as this can be hard for me to accomplish due to my shakiness in my hands. Having tics is a little bit like having hiccups. Even though you might not want to hiccup, your body does it anyway. Sometimes people can stop themselves from doing a certain tic for a while, but it’s hard. Eventually, the person has to do the tic. I have Tourette Syndrome but Tourette Syndrome does not have me. I was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome at the age of 6. And I am 33 years old now. In my teenage years my Tourette's was out of control. I had loud hooting and shouting noises. When I asked my parents if I could go out to public places and to movie theaters to dinner and restaurants they said yes. These noises are called tics. Whenever someone or a customer of a business for example ask me about the noises or made a rude comment I would just explain to them this is what I am and this is what I have. If they would like to go somewhere else than they can but I am staying here and enjoying my food or my movie. Tourette Syndrome has affected me in many ways. One of my former doctors put me on a lot of high-dose anti-psychotic medications for a long time which then made me like a zombie pretty much throughout the day. I was sleeping too much and was not able to concentrate because of the medications I was on. Eventually this made my hands shake really badly. We switched doctors and my doctor now is really great.! He helps me out with my shakiness in my arms and my head by giving me a very very small shot of Botox (yes the kind you get for wrinkles but not exactly) every three months. This has actually helped with the shakiness in my hands. I also work at a retail store here in Houston Texas as cashier. Sometimes you may see me struggling at work. I may ask you to help me out with bagging or help me bag the breakable items. Please respect my request as this can be hard for me to accomplish due to my shakiness in my hands. FYI You Are Not Alone if you are an individual with Tourette syndrome there are support groups and other similar groups that you can join. do not feel left out, and don't allow anyone to keep you isolated
According to the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/tourette/facts.html Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a condition of the nervous system. TS causes people to have “tics”.Tics are sudden twitches, movements, or sounds that people do repeatedly. People who have tics cannot stop their body from doing these things. For example, a person might keep blinking over and over. Or, a person might make a grunting sound unwillingly.Having tics is a little bit like having hiccups. Even though you might not want to hiccup, your body does it anyway. Sometimes people can stop themselves from doing a certain tic for a while, but it’s hard. Eventually the person has to do the tic. There are several ways that you may help out with Tourette syndrome and Tourette Syndrome awareness
Please read the full blog here: https://adamfarris.net/blog/f/adam-tourette-story
And remember to support this podcast, and follow my podcast. you can find me at my website, I am an autism advocate and inspirational speaker.
https://adamfarris.net/https://linktr.ee/adamfarris123

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/adam-farris-podcast--6615564/support.

Stay Connected

Follow my journey, support my advocacy, and learn more about my work by visiting adamfarris.net. Together, we can make a difference!

<itunes:author>Adam Farris</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Hi my name is Adam Farris. I am a cashier at Walmart in Houston Texas. I strongly believe that customer service is what makes or breaks a business. Without good customer service we will not have businesses or businesses to give us jobs. In my 14 years plus years of experience with customer service in retail I've seen a lot evolve. But recently I've seen different things evolve especially in technology. I believe retail is undergoing a master transition with a digital disruption regarding cashier-less registers. With one cashier per one scan and go register I believe it's going to backfire one day and then companies are going to have to go back and fix it the way Sam Walton had it. Let me explain further. For example, someone can take a $5 sticker from a product place it on a $1,000 TV , scan it at the scan and go and be out the door in no time. Also things like the robots cleaning the floors or the robots stocking the shelves are taking away jobs from people. In my opinion we cannot have retail or customer service without people interacting with one another. I feel that is what really matters in the end. Thank you very much and have a nice day.
