John Backderf, also known as Derf, is an American cartoonist most known for his graphic novels, which include the highly acclaimed, My Friend Dahmer—winner of the Alex Award in 2013 from the American Library Association and a film adaptation in 2017. Graduating from high school in 1978 in his hometown, Richfield, Ohio, Derf would attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for a mere six months before dropping out and beginning a garbageman job that would later inspire his second graphic novel, Trashed, in 2015. Having been slapped awake by garbage-filled months, Derf enrolled at Ohio State University, where he would graduate with a degree in journalism and experience as a political cartoonist for the Ohio State Lantern. Professionally, he began his career at The Evening Times in West Palm Beach and then as a staff cartoonist at the Cleveland Plain Dealer in the 1980s, a time following his involvement in the punk movement of the late 1970s. In 1990, Derf began his comic strip, The City, which would appear in 174 publications across its twenty-four year lifespan. Derf’s first graphic novel, Punk Rock and Trailer Parks, was published in 2010, and launched his success in the field. This September, Derf will add The Dissidents to his dazzling catalog, and share with the world his fifth graphic novel, a suspenseful political thriller combined with comic history that is sure to leave readers satisfied.

Ghada Hatem-Gantzer is acclaimed for her fierce defense of women’s health rights and for founding the La Maison des Femmes—the first healthcare facility for women recovering from gender based violence—in 2016. Hatem-Gantzer was born in 1959 in Lebanon, where she went to school at the Lycee Francais in Beirut, and then later to France to study medicine. In 1996, determined to offer comprehensive care, she created the first Medical Assistance Center for Procreation at the Bluets Maternity Hospital. Continuing her mission, in 2010 she joined the Hopital Delafontine where she established an IVF center, a female genital mutilation treatment unit, and a breast cancer unit. In 2011, she took lead of the maternity unit of the Centre Hospitalier Delafontine, where she discovered that out of 4,700 women who had given birth, 15% had experienced genital mutilation. It was this discovery that inspired her to found La Maison des Femmes. Since its opening, La Maison des Femmes has received the Brussels CHU Peace Prize in 2017, and the European Citizen Prize in 2018. In 2024, Hatem-Gantzer was given the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch in Paris, an apt symbolism of the light she’s brought to thousands of women who prevail despite their circumstance.

Emily Harrington is an American professional rock climber and mountaineer born in Boulder, Colorado in 1986. Finding competitive success in the sport, she started as a member of the USA Junior Climbing Team in 1998. At age 16, Harrington won her first of four USA Climbing Adult National Championship in sport climbing. In 2003, she began her studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she graduated with a degree in International Affairs with an emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa. In between her studies, in 2005, Harrington placed second at the IFSC World Championships. Upon graduating in 2008, Harrington transitioned into professional outdoor climbing, where she has since cemented herself in the world of mountaineering, having achieved the first individual free climb of the American Way route on Pik Slesova in Kyrgyzstan, among other accomplishments. Now, Harrington lives in Tahoe with her husband Adrian Ballinger and their four year old child. Biographies:

Lucinda Williams is a Grammy award-winning American singer-songwriter with over 700,000 monthly listeners on music streaming services. Born in 1953 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to a father who wrote poetry and taught creative writing and a mother who spent long hours at the piano, Williams developed her love for writing and music as a young girl. By 1980 she had released two albums, “Ramblin on My Mind” (1979) and “Happy Woman Blues” (1980) to some critical buzz. However, it was the release of her third album, titled “Lucinda Williams” in 1988 that brought her tender heart into the national spotlight. In 1998, Williams broke through commercially with the release of “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” a genre bending album that carved out her unique style—one she says can be found in the crack between rock and country—and earned her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Her most recent album, “World’s Gone Wrong,” (2026) was created in response to the chaotic socio-political landscape of contemporary America. The album, once again, proves Williams’ masterful ability to marry hard truths with a voice evocative of a warm fire on a frigid day, motivating anyone listening to think about their civic role, and drop a few tears.

Dr. Ashley D. Farmer is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Numerous schools and foundations, including the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Whiting Foundation, have supported her research. Farmer is also a co-editor of the Black Power Series published with NYU Press and the Black Women’s History Series, published with UNC Press. Dr. Farmer earned a BA from Spelman College, an MA in History, and a PhD in African American Studies from Harvard University.

Benoît Debie is an acclaimed Belgian cinematographer, best known for his innovative and experimental approaches when it comes to lighting and color grading. He grew up in Belgium and began his career working as a camera assistant after graduating from the Institut des Arts de Diffusion. Throughout his early career he worked both in television and on various short films and commercials, but he would eventually get contacted by frequent collaborator, Argentinian director Gaspar Noé, to work as a director of photography on Noé’s 2002 feature film Irréversible, a project he said working on helped create the foundation for his visual style. Since then he has worked on various feature projects, including Innocence (2004), Enter the Void (2009), Spring Breakers (2012), and The Sisters Brothers (2018), the latter in which his work on ended up earning him a César Award for Best Cinematography the same year.

Michael Pfleger is an American Catholic priest and social activist who has gained notoriety in recent years for being outspoken about the countless systemic issues and injustices that exist within the Catholic Church and how they impact the world around us. Pfleger was ordained as a priest in May of 1977 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, after studying at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary South, Loyola University, and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. He would then go on to lead the Parish of Saint Sabina, a predominantly black church located in the heart of Chicago where he has been since 1981. In his work he emphasizes leading with love rather than judgement and has dedicated his time to running food drives, encouraging sex worker outreach, and helping lead local anti drug campaigns. Under his leadership, Saint Sabina has also been able to develop various programs to provide resources for their community, including an elder’s home, a social center, and an employment resource center.

Tara VanDerveer is one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of women's basketball, best known for her legendary 38-season tenure at Stanford University, where she led the Cardinal to three NCAA championships (1990, 1992, 2021) and 14 Final Four appearances. Born on June 26, 1953, she began her head coaching career in 1978 and became the highest winning coach in NCAA Division I basketball history, retiring in 2024 with 1,216 victories. A three-time Naismith Coach of the Year and 18-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, VanDerveer also guided the U.S. women’s national team to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics. Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas is a Canadian primatologist and conservationist. She is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on orangutans, having spent 50 years studying the species in Borneo. She has since established the Orangutan Foundation International to further her mission of protecting orangutans and their habitats from deforestation and poaching.
