Turkey Stressers: If Stuffed, back home again was a stress test, I passed. No fuss, no granted ways. Not a Black Friday Dude, so I remained Mixed on the shopping holiday. Thinking, brain scattered amongst the clutter., thoughts. I know better, than to ''go there''. Feeling "beside an open fire" (once again) since I've changed CG's, this chestnut is roasted. Sure, Sue and 'us' seem to be getting there, so to speak, but there seems to be a lot to speak about. Consise is not my BI strong point. Job #2; Trees have been cut - there is a house in there! A house under repair, my Goofy idea repair as I was left to mind the business of doing so fully, hole to completion. My ultra busy mind found it's busy mind, and in full wonderment (minus the repair folks I wanted) . But its getting done, by good fellers. Stressed #1 was my daughter, a new precious mother of a beyond precious son, and an old man's POA (mom) to boot. Busy mistaken recovery, spent week seeing docs for both of us. The old guy wishes to share life, liberty and the pursuit of America, before it is lost - my "mind" that is. Full Time Stresser. But first Grampa, er, "DuPa" gets to teach baseball to the youn'in in my Old School Hardball ways, with a controlled coping skilled mind along the way. baseball is life, and life is baseball. I wish IMPEACHMENT was my biggest worry. A sudden, out of the blue, for whatever 'fault' given immediant attack on your life, your brain, your thoughts and ideas, gone in a flash, as my dear colleague Kim Justice would offer changes you, makes you relearn, and relearn again. You do things right. Its your new pledge to mankind. Sorry, but myself, 29 operations later, I'd rather eat a plate of Impeachment with left overs for as long as I'm fed. Some days I'm just fed up, witnessing the American Way turning this way and that way. So, why it still in favoritable effect, VOTE this Tuesday, 6 am to 6 pm at your local polling station, most are voting for local officials - school boards, trustee's, Mayors and Town Committees. If your dog gets loose, who do you want to pick it up - safely? Local elections very important and usually impeachment free! Your vote counts very much so in local elections, don't pass it by as you watch the church bus fill up voters at the polls. Stop and vote, take a break in the day of being American. Understanding what we never imagined; seeing the ways of others ways but not ours. It's a brain injury bonus, and a slippery Slope to ski down. Nothing is imaginary, (OK, for most survivors) yet feeling lifeless is what others around us will make us feel - lifeless. Choices, decisions and ''ways'' are no longer ours, but we do have a say (don't we?). That's because in most cases, those particular 'others' are inside their own minds, providing reactionary thoughts - not necessarily helpful thoughts. They are ''busy'' in the day of life, we are just 'busy' searching for our life. None of these actions are understood in logical reasons to another, and what exactly is logical? Caregivers along with Survivors in need will ever work an easy to accomplish goal, again, exactly what is an accomplishment? Slow down, slow them down, take the time, no matter how much time it takes, to find a mutually accepted end result, my friends. Of , we can continue to loose our minds because we are not for sure how to Cope with the message that have become confusing. The World Wide Connections of Traumatic Brain Injury Understanding is the goal of myself, and so many interesting people. If, I could speak another language except Hoosier-American... I simply was asked, applied and was hired. Just 2 years into a TBI that gained the title of STBI - a dead man waking. The talking seemed imortant . IU Health, mainly Dr. Scott Bjerke had other ideas. My 'issue' was called a miracle by so many medical voices as I simply thought of being asleep. I guess 54 days of sleeping was more than many could bare. Not me, I mean, yes soreness abounded, wasn't comprehending any more than "those people over my bed". Trying to tell everyone that would listen, just to smile again, don't worry about me. No one would listen, ever. I saw them, they didn't see me. I begged our God to allow me to let me put smiles on peoples faces, the ones in comma's need happy looks, not so sad as if someone special had died! I wasn't aware as of yet, the person was me. I saw my father's very noticeable 'grin', and in my soul, we was OK. "Look's like a pretty rough road ahead," Dad admitted. And as history and him would tell me - "at least there's a road, though..." Full week kinda got me, but we had a blast, and fall out. Mercadi took me to Neuro Study, while her and Jenn walked the Malls, I took a a 6-hour neuro psych exam. Of those and alike tests taken before, NEVER in one day. It got me, took me down Saturday. Friday the 'normal' visit to my Behavior Counselor completed a full week of Doc's. Jenn saw Doc after Doc last week too, finally getting the help she needed. Switching state residence with a TBI, or any illness ''takes some time, but your illness doesn't go on hold." We learned some ropes. #1 - patience. On TMDS tomorrow night, you and Jennifer havee the stage. Seizure avoidance, Dr Backhouse calls it. Solid, enjoyable weekend to all my fellow Vets, those on Active Duty and those thinking about 'The Land of the Free.' Jennifer, Mercadi and i did The Brain Mechanics television show with a lot of insiration given by Caleb Smith and Parks Director Denise Rhetz. She'll discus this week on a remarkable project Richmond Parks and Rec and students from Earlham College. They invented a sensory park!!! A wonderful playground for able and disabled children. A park to make it happen. This park had so much to offer to the public . From 6 months to 99 years old, everyone has a safe place. Jennifer will take you through this amazing park and tell you other things and places safe for time and discuss what "WE" can do to ease autism and disabilities...

With my co host on a huge mental delay, let's discuss being a custodial parent not allowed its child. Alabama courts met these eyes for the first time. Wild and weird for this ex-MAA who spent much time in Military Court Rooms. I've been to Indiana court rooms too, many times. Ohio too, and D.C. Never is a court room nice to visit or experience (unless your me), but for the first time I actually looked in parking lot for animal control truck to be holding a kangaroo. I hobbled away with the badged hoopers - but safely. Eventually. WAIT until you hear this story about the respect shown to a brain injury couple. Alabama, now I see where jeff Session's law work was formed from, "the good ol' boys''. Speaking of good ol boys - how about your Houston Astros! I've been telling you, now you saw for yourself. But don't peek into the 'Bama court system if you re looking for assistance or help for the Mentally Disbled - they'll just look for your gun. No gun, but my leg was found. Been screwed over by a child court because of your tbi/abi? Perhaps a true system is needed, where officials begin the day picking out nice, clean clothes to wear to work. My mother would destroy me if I adressed a court room such ways. And that was just my morning. After the devil slipped over from Georgia at sunrise, Indiana and a World Series CHAMPIONSHIP closed out the long, unbelievable day. Not UNREALISTIC, we save that for belief... Unlucky 13 ended up pretty lucky for me. Let's do some math skills, TBI wise. 1 appendix removal at 12; 27 surgery's since 2008, the "Year of The Wreck." Now, as of Friday afternoon - 13 of those total surgery proceedures have been ''done'' in the last 5 years. Angioplasti something again and my blood is flowing best it has in a couple years - at least by my strong guess. You see, once brain injury recovery in the early years - its not over. New and fresh chronic issues 'pop' up, or simply 'scare tissue' developed around your wounded brain cells, or dead brain cells. 28 times under the bright lights of an O.R. - "Hi, I'm Matt Duffin." Life 'changes' with a brain injury, it's a fact. Comfortability isn't home, if in fact this place is home? How DO the loved ones 'gear up' for the long battles ahead? Is it help, listening, working and understanding? Or is it time for a life change in total body and soul? Personally, I moved back and purchased the house I was raised in - the first time. I was as comfy with my father as a survivor can be. Yet, the struggles, the fight, the battles wasn't familier, just the surroundings. Dad was fantastic in my recovery early on, wonderful. As he passed on, more than dad left with him. My leader, my corritive human and my accomplice left MY team. I have to battle on, in 'normal' Matt Duffin surroundings, 'Down on Main Street'. A certain co-host survivor was 'home' in Alabama, but her recovery was on a "Dr Thompson' tumble, and death by suicide surrounding Jennifer's thoughts. Memorial Day. We remember our fallen hero's of war, and occasionally peace. This is America afterall, Land of the free, home of the brave and country built by war. NASCAR joined the Memorial race rally with it's All Star event - the World 600. Picnic cookout at Matt's house today. Jennifer, yes THAT Jennifer Goodman did most of the cooking, er, grilling, and we thank her gratefully in Milton. I believe she understands how much she is appreciated with open arms and warm hearts. The Downtown Milton Studio is 90% back in gear! However, the 10% in question, may cause us problems. Then again, this 3.4% of Survival of a life usually causes us problems. But its not the Colts playing, so I only wish Bill Bellycheat and Bad Brady the worse - like any ordinary NFL week. My Co-host Jennifer Goodman is away from studio tonight ASLEEP &/or cheering Atlanta Falcons on. Southern Bell, football and illness requested time-off. Hummm? Go Birds! She had surgery on Friday, "request approved". I'd just got back to my desk, too. An hour after last week's show, I began a trail that encountered a concussion, cuts and bruises and bumps on the noggin AGAIN last week. Oh my ribs hurt, whine whine whine - but not rebroke. Bloody, confusing, life on life terms meant I was seizuring out, moving to fall, over and over to "fight or flight' the moments. It was, shall we say, a "wrecking ball" with my PJ's on. I'll share the moment, Henry Co Hospital's fine help, along with Milton Rescue and more. Started feeling better yesterday, overdid it and now popping back around. Wasn't sure a TMDS would be on because of the horrindous week behind us. Dearest Jennifer had surgery on Friday morning, around the same time I was opening up room on BIRN's "The Duffin Ward". She's sore, tired, and sends her love. Goofier than ever (strange though, I can almost 'feel' myself coming around) I'm surfing alone tonight. Presidency aside, it was a good week for TMDS staff. Jenifer Goodman, my sidekick, was on television on ABC in Birmingham, Alabama, discussing TBI, life as a mother with TBI, a recent book she was a contributor in and two-glorious minutes PLUGGING TMDS and BrainInjuryRadio! I and we thank her. Jen's beautiful self was quite the guest. You, as listeners, gave her courage and the ability to work an interview. I and Jen thank you. Amy Sue Root's mother Sue, sent out a post this week on the 40 different types of Seizures, and commonality following Traumatic Brain Injury. Or as I like to say "it came with the territory." (hoping folks know I am still KING of my territory. You don't like the terrain, move along please). Please feel free to offer your Seizure experiences by calling in. Seizures, 8 years post accident, keep me from driving, working, and that's about it. I work thru the rest - they happen. I wish my presents was in Cullman, Alabama today. If nothing else, to see my co-host Jennifer Goodman RUN to Wal-Mart, as was just text to me. Now, indeed I have thoughts, plans, GOALS and ideas, but my favorite day is tomorrow. Following ALL THOSE DAMNED DEATHS, tomorrow is good enough for me. Resolutions are for the drunk-minded on New Years Eve, and children. But drunks can act like children, and us with brain 'issues' can act like a underaged teenage party at times. It just happens. But, doesn't require the same amount or mixture of booze. We can just shake our head real fast. But we DO NEED GOALS in our life, our daily life, the lives of those around us and beyond. And writing it down on paper can be SOOOO time consuming, if I can find the paper that is. Now, what was I writting down? Let's learn the Memory Book made YOUR way game. It's easy, fulfilling, MEMORABLE and 'kinda cool' if you will. Yes, you have a memory, but yes, MemBooks is a boost. Your boost. You just can't forget your book. NEVER. It's your book, your help, your guide. Uh, I left mine once at school long ago, at it developed into THIS! Wasn't the reason for my book but soon came awards, radio, TV, PEER Mentor, but it sure turned out to be. Debating on my mindset, my hopechest, my work and 'which months' will I hospitalized in 2017, again, I've goals not yet on paper, but planned. It's FINALLY time to write, not a book, but books. My own mini-Grisham left behind. The wants of families need met, the need of a Survivors? They just want to talk about what they know - themselves; until you begin to teach them life itself. Sargent Jonathan Winchester is a friend of mine. Jon became a professional photographer after 18 years of active duty in the Army; we worked many ballgames together during my sports writing years. The career Army man didn't reach the 20-year retirement mark because of a TBI and PTSD. Medically Retired. We, in the Canal Town area are so proud of his duty and service - 2 tours in Iraq and 1 near deadly tour in Afganhastan (sp), We'll talk more about the Veteran's Administration, and it's 'form' of recovery. But Mr. Winchesters post service duty bars none. Often a pall bearer for those who didn't survvive the wrath of war, Jon has seen Presidental Duty in motor cades, bike rides, memorial motor bike rides and even had his picture on a bike with Pres Obama taken (shut up!). We'll run other PTSD interviews as time allows. Also looking forward to an update from Sue Root (maybe), Dr. Kevin Butterfield, Gina around midnight and of course, Sam Way! Rough week in TMDS world of TBI. Myself, for certain. My Co-Hosts, probably. Melissa Meep and Sam Way have TBI's everyday, like me. Each day is a struggle, from wiggling our toes to see we are alive a awake thru a double/triple shower past burning lunch to forgetting to take your meds. It can be a struggle. Do God's 'regular' folks understand? A few try, most don't. Many family members and friends took an 'exit, stage right' when we woke from our trauma. Now, agreed, they have lives as well, but the trauma seemed over. Doc said so! WRONG!! It just begain. In total, we must learn to live in this world, baby step by baby step, because, uh, well, WE FORGOT OUR LIVES, which means we forgot most. Some comes back, in spurts or recollections from others suggestions, many never do. I'm telling you, my last marraige was a happy time! I'm making the shambles so. Don't care to relive the ugly when tomorrow looks beautiful. One day at a time. The Navy taught me the only easy day was yesterday. I agree, but man, this past week's been tough in total. Attacked unknowingly by ignoranus folks who have no idea what living with a brain injury is like, nor care to. Too busy. Let's teach them what busy is REALLY like, such as living with a TBI. Thank you Lord, appreciated however I never felt lucky. I felt totally changed. She can talk about numerous things, except herself. I'm a countryboy from Milton, and been interviewing folks for a couple of decades. Jeff is the Fire Chief of the Cambridge City Fire Department by 24/7, and Indiana Deputy Fire Marshall by 7 days a week. Oh, EMS, Nurse, Master Firefighter, even a drag car racer. Let's talk about Fire Safety and prevention. Jeff and both his 'staffs' did just that this past week, going into the schools and addressing citizens about 'blazing hell' - which turns into trauma for someone. We learned not to play with matches, and graduated to smoke alarms and personal fire extengushers. But, MR and MRS TBI (or Miss), do you know when to use, HOW to use, or properly checked the fighting apperatice? Need help? Take notes. This is a fantastic opportunity to discus fire, EMT and first-respoce questions. Have any? Ever been on the other side, where you was the FIRST needing response, but was, uh, knocked out or something? More first responce of the lawful side is expected. Milton Police Chief Josh Russell may stop by, time permitting (busy schedule that EVER changes, he has) and discuss house and home safety, neighborhood watch programs and just what to do if that weird looking goblin' hangs around your house too long during Halloween. Nope, not a Comedy Club where folks make fun of TBI, in fact let US TBI Survivors enjoy a night on the "town" (well, Connersville anyway)! Draining, a bit, sure. But smiled, laughed, observed, enjoyed, visited and certanly, was ready to go home. But after the show, which was over by 'funtastic' 10 p.m. Yes, in time for meds and beds. Can you go out on the town? Make sure friends and trusted folks are around, if need be. But only if need be. Enjoy the moment, and most importantly - allow your 'date' or 'sidetripper' to enjoy the night too? Well, it takes practice to be social. So well discuss a few SOCIAL SKILLS tonight, which doesn't mean buying the next drink, or flirting beyond control. I personally spent the evening with TMDS Medical Director Kevin Butterfild and crew on Saturday in his "comedian" role, which is every day, all day long. A survivor of a TBI at a young age, Kevin enjoys the moments of the day, well, usually that is. HA!!! He, funny man (and he is!) Jimmy Roberson open the nights parade of humor, ADULT HUMOR, Closed by Headliner Comic Matt Holt. Guess who recorded the show, for you to here. So, send the kids to bed in about an hour, and we'll listen in for an hour or so. Funny, with the normal comedy club routines of relationships, sex, gender, race if not creed. AND of course make fun of themselves too! Its a COMEDY SHOW. No pure predjudices or direct offensive remarks intended directly towards any one. So, as we laugh and try to "enjoy" our brain injuries on TMDS every Sunday, enjoy with a toungue in cheek. Or what ever that is in your mouth....

We’re going at a higher rate of speed tonight from the downtown Milton studio, for this weekend TBI Awareness race car driver Ernie Francis Jr. took a whole world of survivors to the top. Co-hosts 'Meeps' will Peep in, and Sam has his Way. TMDS Medical Director Kevin Butterfield is watching his coffee perk, he'll be here. My buddy Matthew Olsen will contact us from Michigan in the second hour, let's advise him of what we know. AND, the third hour by Skype if not Stealth is our lovely, er, professional TBI Correspondent from South Africa, Gina Gee. Not only winning the annual Virginia International Speedway Trans American TA3 race today, but becoming the youngest driver EVER to win a Trans American championship was Ernie Francis Jr. in the TA3 Division Series. Yep, our MAN is 16. Not sure he owns a razor yet. With his season’s fifth overall win in TransAm this afternoon, his #98, or #9 (even #86 if it worked for you), Junior runs also for YOU, TBI Survivors. In fact, several of us passed away or still kickin’ had our names wrtitten right on top of the camaro this weekend, for the entire racing world to see. He has NOT been influenced by a survivor in his life, nor really knew any, until this summer. His primary infuence comes from God, and his dad. Junior simply wishes to promote what he KNOWS can happen anytime they buckle up on the track, or you do on the highway. Ask my friend John Mills. Young but a senior in high school is well grounded, having met and stayed with his crew and dad at Mid-Ohio. His father Ernie owns and operates (works so hard too) Breathless Performance Racing. He’s driving the beautiful hauler down the road to Miami now. Let’s see if we can reach the Champs…

In fact, we all have communication breakdowns, be it social, relationship, work or 'just hanging around' with the fella's. And though many of us Survivors are open ended, the closed mind of others occasionally break us down so, it's time to walk away or worse yet - argue. Officially unofficial (but real close) TMDS begins its 3rd season this week. See? Unrealilstic Belief is still dominating my life!!! Such as a TBI, where has the time flown by? Wasn't it just last week we started this show? Over 100 episodes, 109 at last count. Thank you all, for allowing me into your life. I mean, I look to do well, and do mean well - always. Get confused still? God, I HOPE that's the TBI problem - for if it isn't, now I'm really confused!!! As in the past opening acts of a new season on BIRN, we'll start by visiting the Annual TBI Suvivors Education Conference presented by the Indiana Brain Injury Association. Lora Miller has provided a wonderful effort towards education for and of brain injury's with Education in the forefront. Social moments, perhaps not the gathering of old, but available and will be worked on. Trust me, she's on my speed dial!!! But, hosted on the campus of Methodist Hospital in downtown Indianapolils is an elaborate and one of 18-model Neuroscience Research Buildings nation-wide, the focus was indeed on BI's and information. National speakers was of the best of their trades. Listen in tonight, we'll play an offering or three. OUR TBI Race team that wasn't in Utah for the World Championships also attended, with John MIlls stealing the show (he looks like Richard Gere) and hearts of insperation, and TMDS Medical Director Kevin Butterfield greeting, and surely I did something our presentations kicked off in a big way. America's 4th of July Day, or as fellow Hoosier John Mellencamp called it - Justice and Independence - is before us. Let's talk about Holiday gatherings, the sparkles, booms and fireworks, the children laughing, people talking while we sit in a stimulied stare. After a hotdog of course. Or having a beer with folks over the traditional hot weathered holiday. Is it ok? What about lighting the fuses on the works? Cooking a dish for the picnic? Just simply avoiding the day, after all, what is more joyous than being alive AND UNDERSTANDING THAT JOY! That's a topic. Me? I'm simply at a TBI loss, currently. Too much has 'dumbfounded' my craziness as of late. Call, straighten ME out. Just don;t yell, or tell me what else I'm doing wrong. Enough of that this week. Personnally, I'm in a droll. My father has been deathly ill, and as his "Caregiver" (and he mine) its just tough to take. Be aware, my plate is never full enough, pile it, let's have some fun. But its awful heavy right now, and with this 1/3 of a stomach, I'm full. Yes, I'm always 'full', at least of myself, but there isn't much to spill over this week. Let's try. I don't miss Sunday's; I could use a laugh too....

And in racing, where the up-close speeds, dramatic side-by-side racing can take its toll even with helmets and all the safety put into the cars, folks still crash and burn. I'll set up class, as taught by the Dr. Lisa Thompson Family Education Center and TBI Survivors Network. Personally, I've taken both classes (many times - repetitive action promotes a mind set). I'll also toss in Support Group information - how to start, methods, ideas and more. The book I began the East Central Indiana Support Group comes from BIAA, IBIA, and Virginia's Brain Injury Association (always good to get many information guides, I believe). Tammy D'ercole is in the Downtown Milton Studio's; inspiration and ways of hope has stormed the building (you should see the new tools in my toolbox).. Dr. Kevin Butterfield will call in from Indianapolis, or Michigan, or Alabama, or where ever Race4Time and Wellness Racing has taken him this week. Sam Way, possibly the most miraculous individual I've ever met, is expected to call us from, uh, a way's up north in Canada. Sam is soooooooooooo cool in my world, never a bad word to say and endings polite. Personnally, I've lost some memory ways, thought ways and bonding ways that I'm rediscovering through Sam Way. Quietly and without knowing, Sam has become my PEER Mentor. Ms. Tammy D'ercole was my date, all dressed in lovely (yes, no hat for me - even a jacket!) as over 200 star lighted guests, honoree's and supporters of the Para-olypics gold medal winners, to wheelchair competitors of all designated sports, skiiers (me), blind baseball players, fencers, rowng and kayact, basketball and so many more. Yep, Miracle Baseball mades its initial representation. In all, with the Athleticly Adapted Heroes, Doctor super stars of today and tomorrow and wealthy businessmen supporting aside, it was a "inpirational, enlightening, hope instilling, tearful and joyous, laughter and 'down right fun" a "couple" representing braininjuryradio.com at table #11 was overheard saying. Jake Patrick directed his event in prime time style, with limos normally reserved for nearby Lucus Oil Stadium patrons outside. Jacqui Kapinowski, was honored with the 2014 Visions of Victory Award, which will sit in her numerously decorated personal trophy case. Wait until you hear her, and yes, you will personally one day soon, and in an event interview with yours truely. Also, Mr. Patrick, Emmy and Peabody Award winning Emcee Karen Hensel, fencing extrodinare winning- student Cat Bouwkamp and more. So much to tell, and a fine assistant to share with me. Inside all winter long, our minds seem to buckle up, kindness can turn into snide. Our TBI's get in a 'rut' participating in the Brain Injury Game. (like my Pacers ball season is going.) So, let's Clean Them Out a bit tonight, and all week long. Take advantage of the situation, instead of a stare into tomorrow. Clean House! As my dad always says "do the best you can, with the tools you got." Whats your tools work on? A garden, the yard? Open the windows and just breathe? There are moments felt I'm truly 'Racing4Time" , or am I already on 'overtime' in life participation? Do you plan to live for the next day, or yet, the moment? This week, I did all three at once, because I met Gina Gee, a beautiful woman with a TBI from South Africa who was a professional horse trainer/rider until a 'wild', or, 'terrorist' horse (as Gina referred) toppled on her head one afternoon 4 years ago. A darling, extremely understandable BI Survivor she is, and you will see why. She needs a few words from other Survivors, as unfortunately, she has , none. Except us for now. She stayed up very late for this show, let's not disappoint her or OUR South African 'family' members with words of encouragment and assistance. Seems, they have none. So, a mother of 3, or father wth a six-figure job attains a brain injury. It's bad, but not death. Now what? Who changes the diapers? Who makes the dinner? Who, who, who? In acceptance of reality as a TBI Survivor, you realize its not going to be you. You may need you diapers changed, and sandwich made - besides the kids too. The money, the bills, the time of life adjusted is the life of a Caregiver. And more. Key word: Care. Family member, spouse, neighbor or home health - key word is 'Care'. You Caring Soul must Care for you, a must all the way around. As well as you CARE FOR YOUR CAREGIVER. Trust, enjoy being around and of course, don't make or 'drive' them made either. It's a practice, like surviving is. Good times, bad times, we've all had our share. The Caregivers world has changed as well, and before we realized ours did. I'll educate (best possible, anyway) from the BICS 'bible', as early in the semester 'Care Giving Awareness' is taught. I had a bevy of precious folks scheduled to call in from the CG side, and our regular friends on the survivor side we trust. Tonight, we stay in the Research Department, walk outside Dr 'Dawn's' door and skip, (ok, hobble) down to Dr. Jim Malek's office. Wait, doors closed, so he must be off saving the world. But lets see who's door is open beside his (as usual), its the busy Elena Gillespie! Let's bug her, she's used to me. Elena is a Research Manager for the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, specializing in brain injury research and has been in research for over 20 years. She is also the manager of the InterFACE Center, (Interaction and Functional Assessment of Communication and Emotion) we discussed last week. InterFACE is a premier center nationally, to assess emotional dysregulation due to brain injury. RIGHT HERE IN INDIANA! Uh, IU does more than play basketball. But, RHI's main research strategy is to focus on emotional changes after brain injury and how to teach patients how to successfully adjust to these changes. Or, LIFE AS IT WILL BE - TBI-style. Elena's own interest is in the use of meditative techniques to help teach patients how to remain calm and be happier in their daily lives. I agree, but, well, Elena - what about me? I'm always happy... FLASH: This just in via Phone - Eric, who moved following my accident, is stopping by the Milton Studio's on his way down south to the country of Kentucky this afternoon. "And Away We Go!" RHI, the 3rd rated Recovery Hospital in the Nation has welcomed me back, but in a different capacity. Let's take a tour, one show at a time over the next couple of months. Let's drop by here first, of course I have a ramblin' path. Ever listen to me? Yet, Recovery at its finest, but TBI Research is it's common body - thus Indiana University Interaction and Functional Assessment of Communication and Emotion (InterFACE) will soon be a Recovery tool of its own kind. In the first of a series on TMDS, we have the wonderful Dr. Dawn Neumann to join us. "It's my baby" she offered. I tried not to disturb the child. She is an Assistant Research Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Clinical Research Faculty at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. She is also the Director of the Indiana University Interaction and Functional Assessment of Communication and Emotion (InterFACE) Center at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. She has her MA in Psychology from Rutgers, NJ and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. Billy Squier rocked this song, we all sang it and didn't really pay attention to "Stroke Me" formerly, well, maybe teenaged nasty. But seriously, Strokes is NOT what we want. Rock and Roll, yes, but not the ABI type of Strokes. Tonight we will discuss Strokes, the signs (maybe). effects (certainly), struggles (you bet), recovery (start now - it lasts for life) and ambition, drive during recovery to continue on in life. Is Strokes a TBI? No, so I'm not overly educated, but was class mates with many survivors. TBI'd myself ya know. Yet a ABI, is very much the same in regards that they are extremely Traumatic to folks, familys and friends. They became our family, the TBI Network! Can we or I change the names sake? No, don't' want to, don't have to. TBI - THE BRAIN INJURY. That's what it means to us. It is Super Bowl Sunday to a lot of our listening audience, primarily to my friends where the Seahawk soars. As 'former' sports reporter/writer/editor NUT CASE, and 'die hard' (even died harder! Yet returned) Indianapolis Colts fan, I can certainly understand the sweep of equal community bravo the event brings. Obviously, there is another side of the enjoyable escapes. Such as my personal TBI initially did. Known, yes, but my sudden impact swept through Canal Town just as sudden. Uh, we all like to talk a little bit, thank you. Small towns; We Care about our neighbors every day, Super Bowl or not. But today is Feburary 2nd, 2014. While Super Sunday has held but since 1967, on a non-set winter day, since the Second of February, 1841 - inside the Morgantown Pennsylvania stadium, evidently was Gound Hogs Day original host city. Was a winter relief insight? Or maybe more Hot Toddies to mix up? One of comedian/actor Bill Murray's best films was titled: "Ground Hogs Day''. It displayed GHD in a different light. Bill's repeaded adventure displayed each and every day was alike, always the same. Only HE could make the corrections, comentment by trial and error. SOUND FAMILIAR? Did you wake up to TBI Ground Hogs Day last week? My Traumatic Brain Injury (origional TBI meaning) and how to cope and recover from its presence, has become much like Bill's role in 'Ground Hogs Day'. Same things, sorta, each moment, each day, and working on said 'issues' to make my world better. My friends, Welcome us to your Premier of "Ground Hogs Day - TBI Style". WIth efforts of Bill Murray; surely we can win an Academy Award for our mantle too. Prediction: Denver 34, Seattle 20. What to do, What to do.....I have a show tonight, uh, what to DO? I know, go back to watching Sunday morning T.V... Channel 110 has "Gidget" on. Sally Fields, she's always happy. What's on MeTV? "The Exes", now there's a funny way to face divorce. Rerun, like my life (3 marriges, ya know - all over with). Next. Just flip the 'dial'....Chantex comercial tellilng me the side effects of 'non smoking' chewing gum may include my mental health. Humm. Sure, OK. *flip* Sports choices? Bowling, Bull Riding and Golf. Oh Boy! I mean, geeesh. No football, and its Sunday! Movie channels (but you'll have to focus...): Gladiator; Jack Nichelson something, gotta be serious. Old Western flick, "Santa Fe Trail". Wait, Ronald Regon stars in this one, you can't be serious! HBO has "Wardens", "Warm Bodys" and "Bullet to the Head". Man, all so serious and sad. If not deep following focus. Where's 'The Andy Griffith Show", or "The Jetsons"? "Maude", "Leave it to Beaver" or "Barney Miller" when you need them.... You see, and especially the early months of a TBI, the mixed up moments are confusing to a situation. You may laugh in church, or cry unexpetedly at the dinner table. Ignore a solem seating, or overlook safety. And more, much more. Uh, you have rattled your brain with a TBI, all parts and functions! Some memories or thoughts, ways will return, some not. Again, you have RATTLED your brain, bruised parts, killed parts. Bruising will heal, in due time. The dead cells? Already being 'buried' with brand new cells (don't drink!). Call, or have your Mom call me. I and WE have been through this....

Well, if it isn't time for my weekly 3 hour break from my TBI to my TBI, and how I enjoy talking to you folks! Its my 'break' from the 'scene', if you will. My scene? Past few months it been situated in my bed room or inside the Downtown Milton Studio. Emotional wreck? Far from it, even in the midst of this winter. Emotionally mad about staying inside? Not really, its cold. Emotionally happy? On Sundays and in prep for the show usually. How about Emotionally stuck in a family situation, confused. You know, like deciding what T.V. show to watch, which can be confusing to the mind, before just deciding not to watch anything. I KNOW HOW YOUR LIFE GOES - SO DOES MINE. Yet, pretty well trained by the Dr. Lisa Thompson Foundation Center to regulate my personal stimuli - the process doesn't ALWAYS work in controlling your emotions. But helps. Helps all - Survivor, Family, Caregiver, everyone - even the postal workers (let's hope). Julie Sharp-Kintz will again be on the show, as we discuss Emotional Regulation with you. Call us. Rock, Paper, Scissors. A childhood game of chance, yet giving insight to memory, thought, decision, success, failure, stratagy and of course, intreging luck 'skills'. Yep, often reflective of dealing with and/or living with a Traumatic Brain Injury. The Rock will be strong, defeating each sharp and "Scissor" object attacking our 'understandings' (be it verbal, physical or uncompassionate). Yet, even one made of granite will quickly disolve when surrounded by a mass flood of Paper work; be it writing skills, noting skills, math skills (my personal kryptonite), EXCETERA. The Scissor? Those robjects indeed cut not only corners, but can slice a goal in half if you are not strong as a rock! Here's a hint as we 'play' the game: I normally choose "The Rock"... Because inspiration, be it gained or give - comes from within. You must be strong, TBI, ABI or NBI (no brain injury). Or as Momma used to say "say what you want Matthew, but you better be right." THE ROCK of truth. And, as a side selling point, "we will Rock you!" because on TMDS we love to smile, and rock n' rock makes me do so. LP even sings! With 'Stonebridge' on the horizon, we will rock on! But, let's talk. What's your weapon of choice in Rock, Paper, Scissors? What works for you? What maybe could you use instead? Rock, Paper, Scissors. Much like baseball to me, a true "game of Life" we all play. Be it real, or be it by hand...

Most of the 'cooler' States in America are in major discussions about 'snow' this week. Here outside the Milton Studio's, one can notice Indiana must be of the chilly homes. Four Seasons, indeed, we have them here with noticable changes. Such as a TBI has noticable changes during the long term recovery process (or as I call it - Life). Storms, unaware storms strike our world. Some shaky, almost Earthquake like. Some times we become very 'cold' to the outside world, or out of the blue it pours rain (tears) for no reason. A 'pop up' storm to manage, if you will. Why? Uh, well, WE HAVE BRAIN DAMAGE. Part of our history lies dead, while the folks (cells) surrounding the corpse work to overcome the loss our brain took. Try as 'they' might, its just not completed such as "we could do it once"'. Don't get upset at 'them' for trying. Frustrated? OK, sure. But NO negative self talk. Self talk, it rolls off the tounge with ease. Not quite an 'Automatic Though', which I feel is the true Tsumami of TBI Recovery. However, let's see if I can help you, and you can help me. "shovel a side walk" to recovery. Let's learn how self talk in a negative fashion is NOT GOOD, break the mold and go with positive self talk. Let's be nice to ourself. What do you think Frosty?

Veteran's Day 2012 - I have a very, very special guest, a 91-year old Pearl Harbor Survivor who went on to earn 16 more battle stars. This American Veteran 'woke' up after a 500-pound Japanese bomb hit the USS Califonia decks above him, then the Signalman proceeded to tap S.O.S. onto several hatches, eventually locating a rescue team who pulled the concussioned sailors away from a oil filling compartment. Woodrow Duffin, my father, suffered a TBI that day, and like most American fighters was tended to differently at that time - went back to war. Also, Dr Kevin Butterfield - a veteran in his own qualifications - returns to answer chiroproactic questions, hand in his 'homework' to Kim Justus and make us laugh. My daughter Jordan Duffin & myself also are U.S. Navy vets. This will be a good show to learn a bit of history by a man who made history, and became his TBI son's caregiver (me) at age 87. (at age 88 Woody was horricically beat down by a Wayne County deputy sherrif, but thats another story). Woody dances' each Saturday night still, and is a true American hero.

Along with my 'natural' gift humor (hey, I played at Lincoln); and gift to look at life such as it may be now; I've invivted Dr. Kevin Butterfield (too many initials to even begin) as a guest. Dr. Butterfield is a Chiropratic 'engineer', an EEG Neorofeedback reader, a racecar driver, and a national comedian. A busy man who moved from our beanfields to Indy several years ago, but not too busy to share his life's work (not to mention raising 3 kids on his own), I call him a friend, seeing how 15 years ago he fixed my broken back 'maticuasly' shall we say. At one time an actor, with several televison appearances & a former modeling professional too. However, (somehow) a doctor first and always. Tune in, and tune loud. Let's discuss rehabilitaion post "the magic 18 month" period, patient sights of improvements as BI's eventually fall into traps. Social, family, health administrations and the options of 'those folks' being not as considerate. Call in with stories of how your social circle "well, my husband had that done (did he?)" comparisons along with "Oh, I do that all the time (do you?)" likely hoods. Even some buddies wished "they hit their head" by me recieving over-sympathy comments. "Come an listen to my story about a man named Matt; poor Hoosier guy, who cracked his head like that. Then one day he was cloud-like & confused. Heard his momma say, get up you silly fool. "A New Life there is. Perfect thoughts with sightful tools." Well the next thing you know ol' Matt got out of care, kinfolk said "there ain't nothing wrong in there." So as he set his ow recovery, Brain Injury Radio tossed him a bone. Now he does radio, but mostly from his phone. Its like talking to Omaha, Spokane and Augusta too. New York rests aside Milton, ''how's that true?" "Next thing ya know ol' Matt elbow rubs the brightest stars. Sicilia, Kim, LesPaul along with The Marine. Dr Samatha Backhaus explains the brain, it funtioning parts and NON-funtioning parts recorded from inside my personal origional Brain Injury Coping Skills (BICS) classes. I'm hospitalized (yet the show must go on, and since THE show is titled under my name- well...), following MAJOR by-pass surgery last Thursday (93 damned staples worth). Its the beginning of my "Brain Injury Radio Hospital Tour", with next week's (or three) coming from the to-be current stay at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. I was fooled at first (dagnabbed TBI), but RHI is where my return to life found it's footing (Or at least the building where I learned my name, eventually - after 'sleeping for 54 days in 2008!). A quote from one of the smartest men I know - "work hard to play hard and have fun. Don't ever quit - believing or on 'the team'.....

Tonight's episode on 'Crimminal Injustice - Who is really Brain Injured?" has been postponed, as has a 'certain' court date. (if they can wait, I can wait. Job handed me his book to read while I was in God's waiting room.. Depression takes a back seat this week; why strip others of their good nature? So while we are waiting for yet another offering from a wronged system, and preparing for Trauma #4 (or is it 5? Six!! Geesh), I woke up with love and tenderness on my heart and a grin on my face. No need in feeling 'glomy' when the sun is shining. Therefore, as a Brain Injury Copiing Skill subject tonight, let's skip stress management skills for now, and jump right in to common adult conversation - SEX!! Or more common place in the BI world, 'the lack there of'. The changes emothionally, psychologically; if not physical. Sexual behaviors (yes, unfortunately, some horrific) and desires. Another 'change of life' encountered, but can be overtaken with love, respect, and my favorite - repeaded practice. Or we can talk about what you wish - but this ol' bartender will get our conversation going talking about sex! On BI Radio too boot! Well also have the Trauma Sports Segment, give an update on TMDS Band contract negociatgions and remind everyone the East Central Indiana Brain Injury Support Group meets Tuesday at the Milton Christian Church, beginning at 6:30. Now that's something to get excited about!!!!

THE MATT DUFFIN SHOW Depression and Coping Skills As live happen, things do not always go the way we planned. Sometimes it just seems like everything can go wrong. Losing hope is one of the main causes for isolation and depression. As we move around inside a society of what everyone like to think as typical or normal many survivors look that typical part but inside things are different for many we dont even recognize our self, friends, family and other look at us as the old person when all the time there is this new person fighting to be known and seen. But they cannot understand it or accept it in many cases. I am going to share my recent journey, a surgry coming up, my internet not working, and being avoided by various people. It just gets the better of me often times, and catches up. I am going to share how i cope and what helps me get through each day, oh heck sometimes its minute by minute, I think we need to realize the greatness inside of each one of us. We need to cut our self a break and realize the great tryumps just to get out of bed with someone we didn't pick or even want. To have the energy and strength to carry on truly shows that we have become strong and powerful, it is not us it is everyone else. That is why brain injury is a civil rights movement, one more neccassary that equal right we are fighting for our exsistance - for society to realize who we are, that we are here and to accept that we are here and not a mental disorder.

Call-Ins "My true recovery began during Brain Injury Association of Indiana Conference, and the doors simply continue to open once a path was located. My initial show will do just that, offer various interviews from the Sep 12-15 IBIA Conference, IBIA Executive's and a swarm of confused folks trotting around. Then there is 'us', but we are used to confusion. As a BI, quick wit my constant enjoyment of the moments. Because this damn brain injury is too serious and sad each day; so I smile and share. Smart Ass you could say - but one with the 2011 Courage Award on my mantle. So for what I plan to produce on BIR, for a few weeks have patience please, we'll get there or get on me....
