Bitter cold. Relentless rain. Wildfire smoke. Heat waves. And suddenly your dog is “bouncing off the walls” and you are questioning your life choices.

I hear it constantly: “He has no off switch.”
“She just will not settle.”
“I’m losing my mind.”

Here is the truth most people do not expect. The problem is usually not a lack of exercise.
It is a lack of balance.

In this episode of Paws and Profits, I break down why throwing the ball for an hour, adding treadmill miles, or trying to “wear them out” often makes things worse. When you build stamina, you create an endurance athlete. And endurance athletes do not naturally relax on the couch at 7 pm.

We are not dealing with “too much energy.”
We are dealing with an unfulfilled dog who has not learned how to rest.

You will learn:
• Why over tired dogs look hyper, not sleepy
• How weather disruption impacts your dog’s nervous system
• The three core daily elements every dog needs, work, rest, play
• Why predictable, protected rest is non negotiable
• How to stop conditioning a canine marathoner
• A simple daily reset structure you can implement immediately

This episode connects directly to your leadership. When your dog can predict when they will work, when they will play, and when they will rest, they stop trying to squeeze stimulation out of every moment. Predictability builds security.

Security builds calm. If evenings in your house feel chaotic, if the mouthing, jumping, and frantic energy are escalating, this is not a personality problem. It is a training gap. And training gaps are fixable. Listen in, then take a hard look at your dog’s schedule. Not just how much they move, but how and when they recover. Because the off switch is not automatic. It is taught.

So why do they still seem distant, anxious, or defiant? Why aren’t they grateful? This week on Paws and Profits: Unleash Your Inner Entrepreneur, with host Karen Laws, The Ontario Dog Trainer, we unpack one of the hardest truths in dog adoption and training — dogs don’t feel emotional debt. They don’t “owe” us gratitude… they owe us nothing. What they crave instead is a safe environment that provides clarity, consistency, and calm leadership.Through the story of Cooper the Hound, a rescue who cycled through four homes before finding peace, Karen reveals how even the most well-intentioned trainers and adopters can unintentionally set dogs up to fail — by expecting love before earning trust. In this heartfelt and eye-opening episode, you’ll learn:

Why gratitude is a human expectation, not a canine emotion.

How unmet genetic needs fuel chaos in rescue dogs.

What predictable structure does for a fearful or overexcited mind.

Why love without leadership leaves both humans and dogs frustrated.

How to rebuild connection through fairness, not feelings, and predictability, not petting..

If you’ve ever looked at your rescue dog and thought, “Why won’t they just relax?”, this conversation is for you.
