At its center is nine-year-old Elizabeth Ann, a sensitive orphan whose sheltered upbringing has left her uncertain of almost everything—including herself.
When circumstances force her to leave her city home, Elizabeth Ann moves to her relatives’ farm in Vermont. The Putneys call her Betsy and approach childhood very differently from the guardians she has known. They expect her to take part in everyday life, make decisions, and attempt tasks she once believed were beyond her abilities. Their quiet confidence in her begins to change how she sees herself.
Farm life brings unfamiliar responsibilities and small adventures. Caring for kittens, helping with chores, and learning to do things independently become opportunities for discovery. What initially feels bewildering gradually becomes satisfying, as Betsy finds that making an effort and sometimes making a mistake can teach her more than constant reassurance.
With affectionate humor and a perceptive understanding of childhood, Fisher follows a transformation built from ordinary experiences. Family relationships, friendships, and practical challenges reveal a girl becoming more capable, considerate, and willing to trust her own judgment.
The Vermont countryside provides a welcoming setting, but the heart of the story lies in the way Betsy is treated. Given useful work, patient guidance, and room to grow, she discovers the pleasure of contributing to a household and the security of being loved for the person she is becoming.
