https://www.spreaker.com/show/above-the-french-lines-by-stuart-walcottAbove the French Lines brings together Stuart Walcott’s letters, preserving a personal account of life behind the controls of an early military aircraft.
From training at Avord and practising aerial manoeuvres at Pau to preparing for service at the front, Walcott describes the patient work behind a pilot’s progress. Difficult landings, unfamiliar machines, and demanding exercises test his confidence. Yet his letters also contain jokes, friendly complaints, and observations about French life. His enthusiasm survives the growing discovery that military flying involves considerable waiting and routine.
Once he reaches the front, the sky becomes both beautiful and threatening. Patrols take him above the clouds into bitter cold, where keeping sight of the other aircraft requires constant attention. Low clouds offer shelter from enemy guns but can also conceal an approaching opponent. Between flights, rain and fog keep the pilots grounded, leaving Walcott eager for another chance to put his training into practice.
Published after his death in December 1917, this collection gives particular weight to his hopes, humour, and plans for the future. These are letters written while events were unfolding, when their outcome remained unknown. For listeners interested in early aviation and personal wartime accounts, Above the French Lines offers a close portrait of a young man learning his craft while facing the uncertainty of war.
