The suggested settlement, which is payable over 25 years, is $6.9 billion more than its previous offer in connection with a 2021 bankruptcy filing by its LTL Management unit.

Women have filed a barrage of suits in recent years alleging that J&J's baby powder gave them ovarian cancer or mesothelioma, a cancer that strikes the lungs and other organs.More than 60,000 parties who have sued J&J are backing the proposed settlement."The newly announced settlement marks a significant victory for the tens of thousands of women suffering from gynecological cancers caused by J&J's talc-based products," a group of plaintiffs' law firms said in a statement. "Under the terms of the agreement, all talc claimants will be able to have their claims evaluated and assessed within one year of plan confirmation, ensuring a swift and efficient resolution for victims of the company's misconduct."

J&J continues to deny that its talcum powder poses health risks, saying that the settlement offer does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing."The company continues to believe that these claims are specious and lack scientific merit," Erik Haas, worldwide vice president of litigation at Johnson & Johnson, said in a statement. "However, as the bankruptcy court recognized, resolving these cases in the tort system would take decades and impose significant costs on LTL and the system, with most claimants never receiving any compensation."

The proposed settlement must now be approved by bankruptcy judge.Attorney Brian Glasser of Bailey Glasser, who represented the committee of talc claimants, also urged the court to dismiss the LTL Management bankruptcy.

"The last time J&J tried this they told the world that $2 billion was more than enough to satisfy these claims," he said in an email. Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday that it will offer at least $8.9 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits filed by people alleging that the company's products containing talc caused cancer, quadrupling a previous offer to settle the suits.The health and consumer goods company laid out the proposal in a news release. The suggested settlement, which is payable over 25 years, is $6.9 billion more than its previous offer in connection with a 2021 bankruptcy filing by its LTL Management unit.

Women have filed a barrage of suits in recent years alleging that J&J's baby powder gave them ovarian cancer or mesothelioma, a cancer that strikes the lungs and other organs.More than 60,000 parties who have sued J&J are backing the proposed settlement."The newly announced settlement marks a significant victory for the tens of thousands of women suffering from gynecological cancers caused by J&J's talc-based products," a group of plaintiffs' law firms said in a statement. "Under the terms of the agreement, all talc claimants will be able to have their claims evaluated and assessed within one year of plan confirmation, ensuring a swift and efficient resolution for victims of the company's misconduct."

J&J continues to deny that its talcum powder poses health risks, saying that the settlement offer does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing."The company continues to believe that these claims are specious and lack scientific merit," Erik Haas, worldwide vice president of litigation at Johnson & Johnson, said in a statement. "However, as the bankruptcy court recognized, resolving these cases in the tort system would take decades and impose significant costs on LTL and the system, with most claimants never receiving any compensation."

The proposed settlement must now be approved by bankruptcy judge.Attorney Brian Glasser of Bailey Glasser, who represented the committee of talc claimants, also urged the court to dismiss the LTL Management bankruptcy.

"The last time J&J tried this they told the world that $2 billion was more than enough to satisfy these claims," he said in an email. "The $9 billion they have offered today makes plain that the prior number was ridiculous, the prior bankruptcy filing was a scam and the entire exercise was a misuse of the bankruptcy system. The court of appeals agreed, and dismissed their case. A majority of Black women say they feel they have to change their hair just to be taken seriously for job opportunities and in professional settings, according to a survey commissioned by LinkedIn and Dove. Approximately 1,000 Black women ages 25 to 64, both part-time and full-time employees, took part in the CROWN Research Study.
Some 66% of them said they had changed their hair for a job interview to lessen the chances of being passed over due to hair discrimination. Twenty-five percent of Black women said they believed they were denied a job interview because of their hair. When looking at the data, said Andrew McCaskill, a senior director of global communications and career expert for LinkedIn, workplaces need “to work better” for women in general, but especially Black women.

This is particularly pertinent now that more Black women are opting to wear their natural hair instead of straightening their hair with chemical relaxers, which reportedly can increase the risk of developing uterine cancer.Once they have landed their jobs, Black women with textured hair are twice as likely to experience microaggressions in the workplace compared to Black women with straight hair. And 25% of Black women ages 25 to 34 surveyed said they were sent home from work because of their hair.

Black women and young Black professionals have shared conversations about their own hair journey through Dove’s #BlackHairIsProfessional campaign which, McCaskill said, provides a safe space to do so. In one LinkedIn post, a Black woman shared a screenshot of a message she received online criticizing her natural hair — saying she needs to “tone it down and make it flat” while also labeling the woman’s hair as “scary.” The woman shared her own selfie wearing her natural hair and said instead, she decided to “TURN IT UP & PUFF IT OUT!”

Experiencing hair discrimination at an early point in a Black professional’s career can cause an automatic “disconnect of belonging” and a loss of confidence in their skills, McCaskill said. One example he cited is a young Black worker not getting the anticipated reaction for their work because the manager “is focused on something like their hair,” he said.“

What we know is that, as you get more mature in your career, you’re typically also more confident in your skills that you have and what you bring to the table,” McCaskill said. “For younger folks, these types of aggressions and microaggressions can cause real angst for them in terms of even to the point of doubting their skills and saying, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”

Efforts to advance legislation have been implemented on a state and national level. The House passed the Crown Act last March to ban hair-related discrimination. California was also the first state to ban hair discrimination in 2019, with a list of other states following suit, including Massachusetts, which passed its anti-hair discrimination law last July.

Companies can foster belonging among Black employees by “giving people space for their authenticity at work and being intentional about it,” McCaskill said. And most importantly, they need to “believe Black women when they have the bravery and courage to say that they are experiencing microaggressions and or hair discrimination at work.”LinkedIn, McCaskill said, provides diversity, equity and inclusion courses on topics such as uncovering unconscious bias in recruiting and interviewing.

But he also said Black professionals should protect their own identity and expression.“If your authentic self and your authentic hair are not welcome in that space, that’s probably not a space where you will be able to thrive anyway, he said.”

The 30th president was unabashed about the genealogy of his mother (whose maiden name happened to be Moor). The 30th president was unabashed about the genealogy of his mother (whose maiden name happened to be Moor). He once explained that her dark complexion was due to her “mixed Indian ancestry.” Ethnicity aside, has any president had a Blacker, more swagged-out name than Calvin damn Coolidge?

3. Dwight EisenhowerVaughn’s Black People and Their Place in History also drops a dime on Eisenhower, claiming that regardless of how his first name sounds, his mother, Ida Elizabeth Stover-Eisenhower, was biracial. Snopes has labeled this rumor as unproven — sounds like someone’s trying to keep Dwight wight!

2. Andrew JacksonAccording to historian J.A. Rogers’ pamphlet The 5 Black Presidents, Jackson’s dad was allegedly Black and his oldest brother was reportedly sold into slavery. Wonder if this changes Trump’s hero worship. (Also, for the record: It’s still fuck Andrew Jackson forever.)

Thomas JeffersonOne of America’s founding fathers, Jefferson was a walking paradox: During his tenure as the third U.S. president, he was a vocal opponent of slavery, calling it a “moral depravity” and a “hideous blot,” and outlawing international slave trade. Jefferson also literally owned a slave plantation, enslaving more than 600 Black people in his lifetime, and freeing fewer than 10 along the way. His life is complicated even more by the bombshell published in the aforementioned The 5 Black Presidents, which claims dude’s mother was “a half-breed Indian Squaw” and his father was a “Virginia mulatto.” And all that’s before we even get to the whole Sally Hemings situation. I’m a professor of Black Studies at the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence and went on to become third president of the United States. He was also an enslaver and a rapist.

When I remind people of this they usually tell me not to call Jefferson a rapist or condemn him for enslaving Black people because he was just a “man of his time.”But what does that mean? Does it mean we ignore that Jefferson enslaved more than 600 Black people during his lifetime, including Sally Hemings, the teenage girl he forced into a sexual relationship with him and whose six children he fathered only to enslave them too?

Do we shrug off knowledge that enslaved children were whipped at Monticello—a brutal terror tactic used by enslavers to exert domination and control? And do we pretend that as head of state Jefferson was powerless to end slavery when other world leaders of the time managed to do so?In day-to-day life, “man of his time” is a cliché often used to excuse past crimes, especially those of so-called great white men. For scholars it’s a meaningless phrase though. Every person is of their time. What we’re interested in is how people lived in their time. All of them. Not just a chosen few. (BY MARLENE L. I’m a professor of Black Studies at the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence and went on to become third president of the United States. He was also an enslaver and a rapist.

Imagine being one of those readers seeking knowledge that reflects on your own human experience and being withheld from doing so. Unfortunately, in the United States, there was a time when certain individuals were prohibited from learning to read or write based on the color of their skin. Historically, black people were not allowed to read, write, or even own a book because of anti-literacy laws. Anti-literacy laws made it illegal for enslaved and free people of color to read or write. Southern slave states enacted anti-literacy laws between 1740 and 1834, prohibiting anyone from teaching enslaved and free people of color to read or write. The purpose of this blog is to shed light on the history of anti-literacy laws that restricted black people’s access to literacy and to demonstrate the resilience of a people who used their emancipated minds to obtain literacy by any means necessary.

Alabama Anti-Literacy Laws and Jennie Proctor

The state of Alabama passed an anti-literacy law in the form of a slave code which states:

The Alabama Slave Code of 1833 included the following law “[S31] Any person who shall attempt to teach any free person of color, or slave, to spell, read or write, shall upon conviction thereof by indictment, be fined in a sum of not less than two hundred fifty dollars, nor more than five hundred dollars.”

Jennie Proctor was enslaved in the state of Alabama in 1850-1865. She did an interview with the Federal Writers’ Project in San Angelo Texas in 1937. The Federal Writers’ Project was a collection of interviews of over 2,300 formerly enslaved black people conducted in the 1930’s. In her interview, she gives a firsthand account of her life as a slave in Alabama. Jennie started working in the fields at the age of 10. In this interview, Jennie gives her account of learning how to read even though it was forbidden. She said,

“None of us wuz ’lowed to see a book or try to learn. Dey say we git smarter den dey wuz if we learn anythin’, but we slips around and gits hold of that Webster’s old blue back speller and we hides it ’til way in de night. Den we lights a little pine torch and studies dat spellin’ book. We learn it, too. I can read some now and write a little, too.”

Restrictions did not keep Jennie from learning how to read. In the wee hours of the night, she would use Webster’s old spelling book, lighting a pine torch to read the words. The black community knows how to make a way out of no way. Our role is that of a pathfinder, forced to come up with ways to get around the unjust limitations imposed on us by those who oppressed us. Despite being enslaved, Jennie refused to be defined or oppressed by her status. She was determined to learn how to read by any means necessary.
