193 - Kierkegaard on Man's Highest Perfection

Mon, 05 Oct 2026 13:00:03 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/lJXOC2PfR3M

We are pressed to dissolve into the mass, to wear a demographic as a self, or to win identity from whatever community we most esteem. Kierkegaard’s answer cuts the other way: the glory of the human being is to recognize utter dependency on God.

In Mythic Mind episode 193, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Zach and David for an Exploring the Psyche conversation on Kierkegaard’s discourse “To Need God Is a Human Being’s Highest Perfection.” They push past the easy proverb that a person needs only a little, through Job and vanity that can even dress itself as renunciation, to the Christian claim that greatness is not pagan self-sufficiency but knowing how much we need God. Along the way: first self and deeper self, the moving wheel of fortune versus the eternal, inwardness against self-enclosure, Christendom versus contemporaneity with Christ, and why casting Kierkegaard as a secular existentialist misses the Christian (even Boethian) grain of the text.

Topics include needing little versus needing God, praying for the powerful because they need God most, grace and being capable of nothing, the hard wine before the good wine, and how anchoring in God frees the temporal self for real community rather than atomism.

192 - Exploring the Psyche: Why Socialism Is Poison to the Soul

Mon, 28 Sep 2026 13:00:03 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/Juoxi8xM5eQ

Socialism is often sold as justice, necessity, or the only way to win. This Exploring the Psyche episode asks a harder question: what does that bargain do to the soul?

In Mythic Mind episode 192, Dr. Andrew Snyder takes up a live Right-wing temptation around redistribution, democratic appetite politics, and seizing power "for our side." He grants the real injustice (vote-buying, short-sighted majorities, a disenfranchised base), steelmans the classical and Lewisian fears about democracy's degeneration and spiritual leveling, then refuses the conclusion that remakes persons into instruments. The court can sentence Socrates. Only Socrates can harm Socrates.

Drawing on Plato and Aristotle, C. S. Lewis, Kierkegaard (and Gregory Beabout), Dostoevsky's Crystal Palace, and Tolkien on the Machine and coerced wills, the talk argues that envy baptized as entitlement, managed security without risk, and power that treats neighbors as tools all shrink the self before God. Freedom requires gratitude, courage, and faithful action. A managed win for any base is still a loss for the person.

Topics include democracy and demagoguery, envy and false entitlement, facticity and possibility, despair and the spiritless crowd, welfare soft slavery, Tolkien's Machine versus sub-creation, and why refusing the smaller victory is the psyche's first win.

191 - Exploring the Psyche: Identity and Becoming a Self

Mon, 21 Sep 2026 13:00:04 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/iXr8KuutfW0

When Boethius lost everything, Lady Philosophy told him the wound beneath the wound: you have forgotten who you are. That diagnosis still lands. Who are you when the roles, tests, and labels fall away?

In this Mythic Mind Exploring the Psyche conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) talks with licensed therapists Jeremy Key and Tyler Finders about identity: Myers-Briggs and Enneagram snapshots, the trap of "I am my diagnosis," agency that will not go away, and Kierkegaard's claim that the self is a relation in motion rather than a fixed type.

Topics include authenticity versus persona, how suffering clarifies what is real, and why identity often arrives when you stop hunting for it and start seeking what is good.

190 - Exploring the Psyche: The Importance of Home

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 02:32:55 +0000

In this Mythic Mind Exploring the Psyche conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder talks with licensed therapists Jeremy Kee and Tyler Finders about the value of home: roots and responsibility, the fear of committing to the wrong thing, hobbits who leave the Shire in order to save it, and C.S. Lewis’s reminder that pleasant inns are not the final destination.

Topics include belonging in a shifting world, establishing versus finding home, and why home still matters psychologically and spiritually.

189 - Anxiety Means You Can Choose

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 14:09:56 +0000

Anxiety is usually treated as a disease to be eliminated. Medication and psychotherapy have their place, but what if, in our pursuit of so-called mental health, we are lobotomizing something essential to being human?

In this Exploring the Psyche conversation, Andrew is joined again by licensed therapists Tyler Finders and Jeremy Key to ask what anxiety actually is. We argue that anxiety is not an impediment to agency, but a call of the human spirit to take responsibility for our choices in the moment where what has been meets what might still be.

We talk about surface-level anxiety versus deeper existential anxiety, courage as every virtue at its testing point, spheres of control versus spheres of concern, and why anxiety cannot (and need not) be “cured.” It can only be answered: by reclaiming agency instead of surrendering it.

If anxiety is how freedom feels, the question is not how to make it disappear, but how to let it educate us into responsibility.

Tolkien once wondered whether a film could cut Helm's Deep. In the book it still teaches how hope arrives at dawn, and how a seeing-stone can undo the unwary.

In this Mythic Mind Lord of the Rings study, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks Book III, chapters 7–11: the Hornburg and the men of Rohan, Gandalf's dawn, and the Palantir's dangerous gift of sight after Orthanc.

Topics include battle as more than spectacle, hope against despair, and why true seeing is moral before it is magical.

180 - AI Storytelling: What Remains Properly Human

Thu, 09 Jul 2026 11:31:35 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/1jTkmfAQ9SI

We live amid tribal AI arguments: every machine-made frame is "slop," or every model is just a new paintbrush. This Mythic Mind conversation slows down between those poles with a technologist and a novelist.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) is joined by Josh Daws (former Disney software engineer; VP of Technology at The Blaze) and novelist Michael Kane (After Moses) to ask what AI-generated media can and cannot bear as storytelling, and what remains properly human when prediction scales into myth-shaped output.

Topics include creativity and collaboration with tools, the temptation of knee-jerk culture-war takes, and how authors and audiences might keep soul in an age of autocomplete.

While it is certain that any number of things may be "really going on," it is not difficult to make the case that the modern internet-saturated culture is plagued by unhealthy conspiratorial thinking.

What drives these tendencies?

How can C.S. Lewis help us to stay grounded in reality and responsibility?

142 - Beowulf, Baldur, and Christ: Myth Became Fact

Mon, 16 Feb 2026 15:03:07 +0000

Baldur the Beautiful dies by mistletoe, waits in Hel, and is promised return after Ragnarok. Beowulf remembers a brother-slaying that looks a lot like Hod and Baldur. What do those northern stories have to do with Christ?

In this Life, Death, and Meaning with Beowulf and Boethius episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder retells Baldur's death and "resurrection," notes the Herebeald/Haethcyn contact in Beowulf, and turns to C.S. Lewis's "Myth Became Fact": if the gospel is the myth that entered history under Pontius Pilate, pagan dying-rising gods are not a threat but expected shadows of the Logos. Christ is more than Baldur, not less.

Part of the Beowulf & Boethius / Life, Death, and Meaning series.

Narnia may be written for children, but it is still Lewis doing the writing. This introduction opens the first three Chronicles as fairy stories dense enough for grown minds: Wardrobe, Caspian, and Dawn Treader in publication order.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) frames how to enter Narnia's secondary world, why fairy-tale form matters, and what Mars, nature, and voyage themes begin to surface across these early books.

Topics include reading order, the low entry bar that still rewards rereading, and how Narnia continues Lewis's larger philosophy of story.

A bus leaves a grey town that may be hell, and thin ghosts step onto the solid outskirts of heaven. C.S. Lewis's The Great Divorce is a dream-vision about the choice that divides: heaven or hell, reality or the self we refuse to surrender.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks the whole book: the grey town, the bright solid people, the Episcopal ghost, and Lewis's hard claim that there are no private affairs before God.

Topics include hell as chosen isolation, the weight of glory made almost unbearable, and why the divorce between good and evil will not be negotiated away.

Lewis's "Myth Became Fact" argues that Christianity does not abolish myth. It fulfills it: the dying god becomes historical fact in the Incarnation, and the old longings of pagan story find their home in a particular time and place.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks the essay's claim that myth transcends abstract thought, that incarnation transcends myth, and why the gospel makes myth more real rather than less.

Topics include Logos and particularity, pagan longing baptized, and why Till We Have Faces works as myth rather than didactic exposition.

Book Two of Till We Have Faces turns Orual's case against the gods inside out. Dreams, digging, and judgment strip the veil she wore for a lifetime until the complaint itself becomes confession.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks Lewis's hardest section: the pillar room, "no fox to help you here," and the moment Orual finally has a face to meet the gods.

Topics include jealousy as love's counterfeit, myth that will not flatten into allegory, and why Lewis thought this his greatest novel.

Orual writes her case against the gods with a veiled face and a jealous love. Till We Have Faces, Book One, is Lewis's retelling of Cupid and Psyche as a story about the self we hide and the truth we cannot yet bear.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks Part One of Lewis's greatest novel: Orual's narrative voice, Psyche's sacred beauty, the Fox's Stoic teaching, and the complaint that will not stay quiet.

Topics include veil and identity, possessive love versus gift-love, and why Book One withholds the face we need before the gods can answer.

113 - Introduction to Till We Have Faces: Lewis's Greatest Novel

Mon, 06 Oct 2025 20:03:57 +0000

Watch the video:

Lewis thought Till We Have Faces was his best novel. Critics shrugged; readers still finish Book One standing at the edge of a mystery. This Mythic Mind introduction opens his retelling of Cupid and Psyche: Orual's veiled face, jealous love, and a myth that aims at the heart before it yields its meaning.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) frames why this book feels less like allegory than the Ransom novels, what "bareface" was meant to name, and how to enter Orual's case against the gods without demanding a tidy moral on first pass.

Topics include myth versus on-the-nose allegory, imagination before explanation, and secondary reading that helps without replacing the story.

Lewis's third essay names the endgame: when "man's conquest of nature" becomes a few conditioners remaking everyone else, humanity abolishes itself. Power without the Tao is not progress. It is patients of power wearing the mask of freedom.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) finishes The Abolition of Man: eugenics and scientific education as predestination, existence-before-essence as a false anthropology, and why That Hideous Strength needs this slim book as its spine.

Topics include the conditioner class, nature reduced to raw material, and why a culture that rejects objective value cannot keep "man" as anything but a temporary slogan.

C.S. Lewis opens The Abolition of Man with a schoolbook that teaches students to distrust their own loves. The result, he warns, is men without chests: intellect and appetite with no trained heart between them.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) covers the first two essays, "Men Without Chests" and "The Way." He clarifies Lewis's Tao, why sentiment needs education rather than sneering, and how this slim book underwrites That Hideous Strength.

Topics include moral education, the attack on objective value, and why a culture that mocks the chest cannot keep its head.

Two murders hit the feed in a way we were never meant to watch: Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte train, then Charlie Kirk. Grief, rage, and online celebration of evil followed. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) reads those reactions through C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man.

This Mythic Mind episode is not punditry. It is a Lewis-shaped look at moral blindness, the Tao Lewis defended, and what happens when a culture loses the language of good and evil while gaining an artificial omniscience through social media.

Topics include casual exposure to death online, the irrationality of heinous evil, and why The Abolition of Man still names our moment.

The last chapters of That Hideous Strength throw Mark into Belbury's prison of ideas, wake Merlin as the reverse of NICE, and open the war between Logres and the bent world.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks chapters 12–17: Frost's macrobes, Babel imagery rising toward judgment, Merlin's old order against progressive magic, and Jane's ascent into the great dance of masculine and feminine under what is above all things.

Topics include demonic hierarchy dressed as science, the foil of St. Anne's, and why this finale is the densest philosophical stretch of the Ransom trilogy.

Chapters 7–11 of That Hideous Strength force the fork: Jane finds St. Anne's and begins to learn obedience in love, while Mark sinks deeper into Belbury's hollow inside. Two households, two cities, one marriage under judgment.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) reads the middle stretch: Dimble's claim that good grows better and bad grows worse, equality raised into an idol, and Ransom's counsel that you cannot stand until you learn to kneel.

Topics include Jane's conversion toward ordered love, Mark's shrinking hell of self-regard, and why Lewis's fairy-tale for grown-ups will not stay neutral.

Preface through Chapter 6: Mark Studdock is recruited into the NICE, Jane begins to dream, and their marriage frays as Belbury's soft totalitarianism starts to look like ordinary careerism. That Hideous Strength opens not with monsters, but with two people being pulled apart.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) tracks the early chapters where Mark, Jane, and the NICE show how progress, expertise, and institutional belonging begin to reshape what each can still see as real.

Topics include the NICE's recruitment logic, the fracture between Mark and Jane, and how Lewis stages the first steps toward Belbury before the novel's more overt spiritual warfare arrives.

Lewis called That Hideous Strength a fairy-tale for grown-ups, and it feels nothing like Out of the Silent Planet or Perelandra. The last Ransom novel drops from deep heaven onto England: Belbury's technocratic evil, St. Anne's remnant, and the old conflict of Logres against Britain.

In this Mythic Mind introduction from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) orients readers before the deep dive: why the tone shifts, how The Abolition of Man underwrites the plot, and what to watch as Mark and Jane Studdock enter the story.

Topics include planetary influences landing on earth, modern power without the Tao, and how to start the strangest book in the Ransom trilogy.

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/wpM57wego3Y

Lewis's Screwtape Letters turn temptation into correspondence: a senior devil coaches a junior tempter on how to spoil an ordinary soul. Screwtape Proposes a Toast widens the satire into hell's bureaucracy, education, and the soft destruction of excellence. In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks the letters and the toast: distraction as spiritual strategy, the war on prayer and charity, and why hell prefers cattle who can become food while God wants servants who become sons.

Topics include the mythologizing of science and progress, the Inner Ring impulse behind status, and how Screwtape trains us to miss God in the middle of ordinary days.

103 - Perelandra: Paradise, the Un-man, and the Great Dance

Tue, 05 Aug 2025 00:02:36 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/90QFX72HsMs

Ransom is shot from Malacandra to the wave-world of Venus: floating islands, an unfallen Lady, the Un-man, and a temptation to seize the Fixed Land instead of receiving the gift. Perelandra is paradise under assault, then the Great Dance.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks the novel's philosophy: descent that receives rather than crashes, Weston's progressive creed, obedience as riding the wave, and why myth may finally demand a blow.

Topics include bent desire versus glory, the Fixed Land as false security, and how Perelandra pulls the cosmic war closer to Earth before That Hideous Strength.

102 - Augustine's Confessions, Books 7–8: Toward Baptism and a New Will

Mon, 28 Jul 2025 15:02:30 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/hCK8UYp665A

Books 7 and 8 bring Augustine to the edge of conversion: Neoplatonic light that still cannot save, the bondage of a divided will, and the garden where "take and read" finally breaks the deadlock. Evil as privation, humility in the Word made flesh, and a will that learns to want the good.

This Mythic Mind episode is the fellowship book-club conversation on those climactic books, with Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) joined by Chase Arrington and Kyle Metz. Recorded as an X Space for the free Confessions study, it tracks Augustine's sifted Platonism, the anti-nature of evil, and the drama of conversion before baptism.

Topics include what Plato can and cannot give, the divided self that wants and does not want, and why the garden scene still names how grace meets a stalled will.

101 - Introduction to Perelandra: Venus, Temptation, and Unfallen Eve

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/fPU7aiJOn3k

Before Ransom lands on Venus, Lewis wants you oriented: desire as echo, glory as telos, and a story driven by the end it aims at rather than by plot twists alone. This Mythic Mind introduction opens Perelandra by way of The Weight of Glory. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) frames secondary reading, names the major themes to watch, and keeps spoilers light so first readers can receive the floating islands without a map of every turn.

Topics include love as willing the good of the other, pleasure ordered toward its fulfillment, and why Perelandra trains desire before the Un-man arrives.

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/RUSCV-MzO5I

For Mythic Mind's 100th episode, author and teacher Aaron Bair asks what fairy-story enchanted you young and still shapes who you are. Personal enchantment, myth and reality, and the bridge between childhood wonder and adult formation take center stage.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) joins Aaron (A Joyful Outpost, on the Beavers of Narnia) and the fellowship for a conversation about the stories that train desire: Narnia, MacDonald, The Iron Giant, and other first loves of the imagination.

Topics include myth becoming fact, why formative stories outlast content, and celebrating a hundred episodes by returning to enchantment itself.

99 - Out of the Silent Planet: Cosmic Hierarchy and Human Bentness

Mon, 07 Jul 2025 09:00:18 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/0mLWBTYRhy0

Ransom is kidnapped into the heavens and discovers that Earth is the silent planet: bent, cut off, and haunted by a cosmology modernity forgot how to see.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks Out of the Silent Planet as story and medieval vision: the pedestrian philologist as pilgrim, Malacandra's unfallen hnau, Weston and Devine's imperial bentness, and why looking up at the heavens as hierarchy still matters.

Topics include cosmic order versus modern space-as-void, language and meeting the other, and how the Ransom trilogy begins by unmaking terrestrial presumption.

Books 5 and 6 move Augustine from Carthage toward Milan: rhetoric as career, Manichaean disappointment, Ambrose on the horizon, and Monica's tears that will not let him go. The restless heart is still traveling.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) is joined by Chase and Kyle for the Mythic Mind fellowship book club on these middle books: ambition, false teaching, friendship, and the slow pressure of truth before baptism.

Topics include becoming oneself before God, shadow selves versus solid persons, and how Confessions keeps philosophy and prayer in the same room.

The door into Lewis's so-called Space Trilogy: why Out of the Silent Planet begins the Ransom series, what to expect from the course arc, and how to enter that first cosmic voyage without treating the novel as mere pulp adventure.

In this Mythic Mind lecture from the Fiction and Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) frames reading order, useful companion essays, and the philosophical stakes that make Lewis's first cosmic voyage more than a trip to Mars.

Topics include the Ransom arc ahead, storytelling essays that help, and why Lewis's "space" fiction keeps pushing past the label.

Episode IV still works because it remembers fairy tale: farm boy, empire, mentors, and a Force that asks whether you turn toward reality or into the shadow. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) is joined by Mythic Mind Fellowship members Ian and David for a free-ranging talk on A New Hope.

This Mythic Mind conversation treats Star Wars as modern myth: Campbellian shape without reducing it to formula, the Force as shared reality (with a Lewis-flavored word about being "bent"), and why the original trilogy still invites existential reading.

Topics include myth versus disposable franchise content, good and evil as orientation, and the launch of Mythic Mind Movies as the series continues.

93 - Knights of the Old Republic: Choice, Jolee, and the Light

Tue, 27 May 2025 11:22:08 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/KfutgcIdL5M

Knights of the Old Republic still ranks among the best Star Wars stories since the original trilogy because you live in the galaxy through moral choice, companions, and relationships that change the fate of worlds. In this conversation the Fellowship presses past light/dark meter-gaming to Jolee Bindo: labeled a gray Jedi in the stats, he chooses kindness and the good while rejecting a corrupted Jedi institution. That is not 50/50 neutrality. As Augustine puts it, you are what you love; what defines you is what you face and move toward.

Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Mythic Mind patrons Josh, David, and Ian for a roundtable on Bioware's 2003 classic. They weigh immersion versus shooters, Revan's memory wipe and whether a light-side path is genuine conversion or Jedi programming, Bastila's fall under Malak, squad play and companion personality, and why a scale-balance morality system (help enough space old ladies, then enslave Wookiees) cannot capture the orientation of the soul. Jolee and Qui-Gon become Reformation-style critics who keep the light's goal while refusing institutional self-interest: the light side as a real good, not a yin-yang half.

https://youtu.be/8IQY5S9JiTM

Books 3 and 4 of the Confessions follow Augustine into Carthage: theater that feeds tears without mercy, Cicero that awakens a hunger for wisdom, and a friendship whose death exposes how hollow his loves still are. False lights still look like truth.

This Mythic Mind episode is the fellowship book-club conversation on those middle books. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) hosts the free Confessions study as the circle tracks ambition, Manichaean shadows, and the slow education of desire before Milan and Ambrose arrive.

Topics include grief that reveals disordered love, philosophy as more than rhetorical polish, and why Augustine keeps treating entertainment, friendship, and career as spiritual diagnostics.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) frames the episode and shares Hannah's kickoff so the fellowship can join a classically oriented season of study alongside Augustine, Paradise Lost, and philosophy courses already underway.

Philosophy means love of wisdom, not a pile of disconnected theories. This Mythic Mind course intro maps a brief history of ideas from Athens toward the present: how thought shapes habit, appetite, and the kind of people we become.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) opens the six-week path: why mainstream academic fashion is a poor guide, what it means to recover discarded questions, and how Plato's eros for wisdom still orders a serious study of the West's intellectual story.

Topics include philosophy as formation, reading primary texts over summaries, and why a history of ideas is also a training of love.

Josh Traylor opens Paradise Lost as England's great Christian epic: cosmic war, the Fall, freedom and glory, and Adam learning hope after Eden. Milton meant to write an Arthurian poem and wrote this instead; the stakes are the same.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) introduces Josh's Mythic Mind course kickoff so the fellowship can enter Milton with a guide who loves Lewis, Tolkien, and the older mythic stock behind them.

Topics include Satan's rhetoric, Adam and Eve's vocation after exile, chivalric virtue in a fallen world, and why Paradise Lost still belongs beside the books Mythic Mind already loves.

How do you keep your feet on the real while a culture prefers the shadow? Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) talks with Spencer Askew about C.S. Lewis, Star Wars, Tolkien, and storytelling after the center has gone soft.

This Mythic Mind conversation follows The Abolition of Man's worry about the real versus the artificial into myth and cinema: why Lewis and Tolkien still retrain desire, where postmodern story loses moral gravity, and what it means to take story back as formation rather than mere content.

Topics include myth versus disposable entertainment, Star Wars as a cultural mirror, and reading Beowulf (and Lewis) against moral equivalence.

86 - Augustine's Confessions, Book 1: Restless Hearts and Stolen Pears

Tue, 06 May 2025 20:26:07 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/uh0NK2O61LA

Augustine opens the Confessions with a restless heart and a child's theft of pears: desire, memory, and the first turns of a soul toward (and away from) God. This Mythic Mind episode is the fellowship's free book-club conversation on Book 1.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) hosts the first meeting of the Confessions study: childhood, education, the hunger for praise, sexual restlessness on the horizon, and why Augustine insists our hearts are restless until they rest in God.

Topics include reading Confessions as prayer and philosophy, the pear tree as disordered love, and how to join the ongoing book club (free Patreon membership welcome).

82 - BBC That Hideous Strength: What the Audio Drama Left Out

Tue, 08 Apr 2025 09:55:07 +0000

Watch the video:

The BBC's audio drama of That Hideous Strength looked like a gift to Lewis readers. Listening closely, the production often leaves behind the fairy tale Lewis said he was telling, including the academic "progressive element" that gives Belbury its bite.

In this Mythic Mind episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) walks his review of the adaptation: what it gets, what it flattens in Mark and Jane Studdock, NICE, and Ransom the Pendragon, and why the novel still needs the earlier Ransom books beside it.

Topics include adaptation fidelity, modern power dressed as progress, and why a hollow audio drama can still send you back to the book.

80 - Tolkien, Sub-Creation, and the Case for Video Games

Tue, 25 Mar 2025 02:48:55 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/N3dsEIdSAcc

Are video games only a waste of time, or can they share in what Tolkien called sub-creation? Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) reads his essay "Video Games as Sub-Creation" and rethinks an old prejudice through On Fairy-Stories.

This Mythic Mind episode asks what happens when play builds secondary worlds with the materials of the primary one: enchantment, truth in fiction, and why "made up" is a poor synonym for false. Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) show up as a lived example of open-world mythmaking.

Topics include Tolkien's sub-creation, games as more than diversion, and the line between idle escape and formative enchantment.

Video games as a medium: enchantment, craft, story, and whether play can expand the imagination the way literature does. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) sits down with Master Samwise and Josh Traylor to weigh the art of games without nostalgia or dismissal.

In this Mythic Mind conversation, they talk favorite titles, subcreation on the screen, beauty and aesthetics in worlds like Dark Souls, and how games might fit beside books as a serious avenue of creative attention.

Topics include games as art form, craft worth taking seriously, and the difference between wasted time and formative play.

Where Mythic Mind has been, and where it could go if the fellowship were fully funded: podcasts, Discord, independent courses outside institutional tuition traps, and a long dream of shared study in Lewis, Tolkien, myth, and philosophy.

In this short Mythic Mind episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) sketches the project's arc from early Kierkegaard dissertation episodes through Beowulf, the Poetic Edda, and Tolkien courses, then names the invitation to creators and patrons who want high-quality humanities without the usual academic baggage.

Topics include cross-posting to YouTube, course life (Brief History of Ideas and more), and what a funded Mythic Mind Fellowship might sustain.

75 - Tolkien's Long Defeat: Northern Courage and Christian Hope

Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:44:40 +0000

Tolkien did not expect history to be anything but a long defeat, though it may contain glimpses of final Victory.

Drawing from his letters, The Lord of the Rings, "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," and "On Fairy-Stories," this episode traces how northern courage (fight for the good of the day without counting on ultimate triumph) meets Christian eucatastrophe: the sudden joyous turn that does not deny sorrow, but denies that defeat is the last word. Along the way: Beowulf's circle of light, Galadriel's "long defeat," Helm's Deep at dawn, and Gandalf on despair versus doomed resistance.

Thu, 19 Dec 2024 16:24:02 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/Yns-tDu_S-4

When the appendices leave a short winter war, how do you film a legend without breaking the lore? The War of the Rohirrim turns Rohan's deep past into anime spectacle, centering Héra while Helm Hammerhand's name still waits to become myth.

In this Mythic Mind conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) is joined by Thomas Salerno and Master_Samwise for first impressions after one viewing. They talk appendix freedom versus fidelity, Héra as narrative center, the thin establishment of Helm's legend, and where this film sits on the sliding scale between Peter Jackson and weaker Tolkien media.

Topics include anime as adaptation medium, character deepening versus static heroism, and why an enjoyable first watch can still leave you hungrier for Rohan's winter made weighty.

What still makes Tolkien great when the fandom and the academy keep trying to remake him? In this conversation, the Middle-earth Mixer joins Mythic Mind for a candid talk about wonder, ideology, and belonging in Middle-earth.

Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) speaks with the Middle-earth Mixer (@middleearthmixr) about why Tolkien's secondary world still draws people, how ideological capture shows up in Tolkien spaces, and what faithful attention to the stories looks like amid culture-war noise.

Topics include the joy of first encounters with the legendarium, online Tolkien culture, and why academic fashion is a poor guide to what the books actually give.

Aaron Bair's A Joyful Outpost reads the Beavers' lodge in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a vision of household economy: warmth against winter, table fellowship, and a home that still knows its calling.

In this Mythic Mind conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) talks with Aaron (Utah teacher and Mythic Mind patron) about hospitality, the long defeat outside the hall, why the household matters when culture grows cold, and how Lewis's Beavers model a local, joyful outpost of Christian household life.

Topics include family and place, defending the mead-hall of ordinary goodness, and recovering home as more than a pit stop between jobs and screens.

36 - On Fairy-Stories: Subcreation, Escape, and Consolation

Wed, 08 Mar 2023 05:01:04 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/a0hIBT-Ncss

Tolkien's "On Fairy-Stories" is the essay that radicalizes how many of us think about fantasy: not childish escape, but recovery, consolation, and the making of secondary worlds.

In this Mythic Mind conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) is joined by John Carswell of The Tolkien Road to walk the essay beside Leaf by Niggle and Mythopoeia as a primer to Tolkien's literary philosophy, including eucatastrophe and why fantasy is a human need.

Topics include subcreation, the difference between the Flight of the Deserter and the Escape of the Prisoner, and how good fairy-stories reawaken the world's strangeness.

35 - Leaf by Niggle: The Little Painter and the Great Tree

Wed, 22 Feb 2023 05:08:29 +0000

Watch the video:
https://youtu.be/z8kjHMubGWI

Leaf by Niggle is Tolkien's quiet parable of making: a little painter who never finishes his tree, a neighbor who keeps interrupting, and a journey that turns distraction and duty into something larger than either alone.

In this Mythic Mind conversation from the Tales from the Perilous Realm series, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) talks with Thomas Salerno (Perilous Realms podcast) about Niggle's art, Parish, purgatory-tinged work, and how the finished Tree reframes what looked like failure in life.

Topics include subcreation, the perilous realm at a higher pitch, and why this short story still speaks to anyone who makes under unfinished conditions.

31 - I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

Wed, 07 Dec 2022 05:00:34 +0000

While my current content focus is primarily on the Patreon-exclusive Grimm series, I'm continuing to repurpose old content to keep the public podcast feed alive. In this episode, I read a blog post that I wrote in December of 2020 as my wife and I continued to work through child loss and empty arms. While much has changed since then, there are some experiences that remain forever-present.

The joy of Christmas can become salt on the wounds of those who are mourning, so I hope that this short episode provides some degree of solace to those who need it.

25 - From Heraclitus to Kierkegaard

Fri, 28 Oct 2022 01:55:55 +0000

As a reminder, the public podcast feed is on a hiatus during the current Patreon-exclusive series on the Grimm fairy tales. However, so the public feed isn't completely silent, I'm going to start dropping some recycled content over there.

This episode is a lecture originally delivered for my "Philosophy and Christian Thought" course that surveys some important themes in the history of Western Thought from ancient Greece to Kierkegaard. This comes from early in my online teaching career, so delivery and audio quality is not superb, but hopefully the content will be of some use to you!

20 - The Forms of Despair

Wed, 03 Aug 2022 05:00:32 +0000

“The greatest hazard of all, losing the self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all.” - Kierkegaard, The Sickness unto Death In this episode, coming to you about 3 months late, I continue our study of The Sickness unto Death with a survey of the forms that despair can seem to take. Through personal experience, people we know, and stories we've heard, it seems that there are many ways we might lose ourselves. In the end, however, Kierkegaard tells us that there is only one, which we must avoid at all cost if we are to be authentic human individuals. Wed, 20 Apr 2022 04:00:00 +0000

After falsely announcing this a few times, we're finally starting on Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death, in which he discusses the nature of despair and what it means to live as an authentic human self in harmony with our design and purpose. Additionally, in response to a listener's question, I share what I believe Kierkegaard would have to say about anxious attachment and avoidance in relationships.

16 - The Sorrow that Makes for Joy

Tue, 22 Mar 2022 12:23:24 +0000

I had said that we would begin with The Sickness unto Death today, but I decided to put that off one more time. As we prepare to discuss Kierkegaard's take on despair, I thought it might be helpful for me to talk a bit about my own experiences on the edge of hopelessness to give some personal application to the philosophical explorations that will follow. I sincerely hope that my journeys through death and shadow provide some light for your path. Thank you for listening! 15 - To Need God is a Human Being's Highest Perfection

Wed, 09 Mar 2022 05:00:00 +0000

In the previous episode, we concluded our study of Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety. In this episode, in preparation for moving into The Sickness unto Death, we discuss Kierkegaard's relatively short discourse, To Need God is a Human Being's Highest Perfection, in which he argues just that. In this approachable, fairly straightforward discourse, he lays out some of the ideas that will be discussed in more detail and with more difficulty in The Sickness unto Death.

At the end, I make another call for submissions to the show's upcoming Tolkien Reading Day episode. After I recorded this, I set up a speakpipe account to make the process easier, so you can either e-mail your recording or go to speakpipe.com/mythicmind.

I also make some recommendations, which you can find here:

14 - Anxiety as Saving Through Faith

Wed, 23 Feb 2022 05:00:00 +0000

In this episode, I conclude our study of Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety with the final chapter, "Anxiety as Saving Through Faith," which uses Augustinian and Boethian themes to demonstrate the educative potential of anxiety in relation to the human task of becoming authentically human. Also, I reveal my plans for Mythic Mind following the completion of Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mythicmind/support

13 - The Good, The Bad, and the Anxious

Wed, 09 Feb 2022 05:00:00 +0000

In this episode, we return to Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety with Chapter 4, in which he discusses, among other things, the psychology of evil and repentance. It's a longer, rather dense episode, so, if you have any questions or comments, definitely send me an e-mail at mythicmindpodcast@gmail.com and I will be glad to address them on the show. 12 - Yes, The Lord of the Rings is Christian

Wed, 02 Feb 2022 05:00:00 +0000

There was recently a post published to Medium, titled “No, the Lord of the Rings is not Christian.” This post, which made rounds throughout the internet, argued that, despite a popular understanding, Tolkien’s great work is not only not fundamentally a Christian work, but that it is actually fundamentally secular, and even philosophically "progressive." I provided a response post to my blog, which seems to have struck a chord with many, so I decided to read it here. The original article superficially touched on so many topics, so I decided that a response worth giving will actually require a series, explore the Christian elements behind Tolkien’s stories, his broader religious framework, his literary philosophy, and so forth. This first response post primarily looks at Tolkien’s narratives themselves. If you would like to keep up with the series, you can subscribe to my site, andrewnsnyder.com or, to gain access to all of my blog readings, past, present, and future as they come out, you can support me on Patreon at patreon.com/andrewnsnyder at any tier. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mythicmind/support

11 - What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?

Wed, 26 Jan 2022 05:00:00 +0000

This is the second lecture from my course, "Philosophy and Christian Thought." I do a couple things in this lecture: first, I address the question posed by Tertullian, “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" with reference to Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas. Second, I provide some thoughts regarding Plato’s Apology. I hope this is of some use to you. If it is, I welcome you to leave me a positive review and to consider supporting my work at patreon.com/andrewnsnyder. 10 - Philosophy & Christian Thought

Wed, 19 Jan 2022 05:00:00 +0000

As I previously mentioned, I currently have too much on my plate to regularly produce new episodes of Mythic Mind, but I still want to provide content on a regular basis. I've taught a few philosophy and theology courses, so I'm going to start uploading my course lectures whenever I'm unable to make new content for the podcast. We're going to start with a course titled "Philosophy & Christian Thought," which is an introductory philosophy course that is meant to help Christians learn what philosophy is and how to think philosophically in relation with the broad history of western thought. Because this course was designed as an introduction, it will likely be more accessible than my regular Kierkegaard content. I hope you are able to gain something from it, and I encourage you to share it with people you know who would benefit from an introductory study like this. If you would like to support my content, I humbly welcome you to head over to my Patreon page at patreon.com/andrewnsnyder. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mythicmind/support

09 - The Existential Moment

Wed, 05 Jan 2022 02:26:00 +0000

It has been a while, but I bring you the ninth episode of the Mythic Mind podcast! In this episode, we return to Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety with the third chapter. Kierkegaard introduces the term of "the moment," which describes our willful mediation between past actuality and future potential in reference to the eternal. In the moment, we are separated from the rest of earthly existence and are able to live authentically as humans, bringing together the eternal and temporal, bodily and soulish, and, ultimately, Heaven and Earth in all that we do. This is the life of true and enduring meaning. This is true humanity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mythicmind/support

08 - The Frog-King, or Iron Henry

Wed, 17 Nov 2021 05:00:00 +0000

In this episode, we take a break from Kierkegaard to examine the Grimm Tale of "The Frog-king, or Iron Henry" as we inaugurate a new series that, after this episode, will be a Patreon-exclusive journey through fairy-tales and folklore. At the moment, this series will be posted irregularly, but, once we hit the next goal of $400/month, they will be released every other week (on the off-weeks from Mythic Mind). This series will be available to all patrons at the $5/month tier or higher.

If you have questions or comments, please send me an e-mail at mythicmindpodcast@gmail.com and I will address your correspondence on the show!

07 - I'm Still Here

Fri, 29 Oct 2021 14:02:26 +0000

As we continue to enjoy parenthood with our newborn twins and make daily visits to the hospital to visit our son who is still in the NICU, our schedule has been a little heavy lately. In this episode, I just wanted to briefly check in with you, let you know that I'm still here, and update you on some changes I've made to my Patreon goals. 06 - The Dizziness of Freedom

Thu, 07 Oct 2021 21:17:50 +0000

In this episode, we discuss Chapter 2 of Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety. Kierkegaard describes anxiety as the dizziness of freedom which is inherent in human existence, but is consciously experienced as we become more or less conscious of our responsibility to properly relate to the worlds above, below, and within. Anxiety is a symptom of our yearning for fulfillment, but can result in corruption just as much as it can result in authentic human satisfaction in harmony with our ideal. 05 - The Concept of Anxiety (Finally)

Wed, 22 Sep 2021 22:52:00 +0000

In this episode, we finish our discussion of the first chapter of Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety. We discuss Kierkegaard's understanding of what it means to be human, truly human, and the role that anxiety plays in shaping our identity, for better or for worse. Additionally, we further discuss what it means to use a mythic perspective to consider what matters rather than, first and foremost, material things. 04 - We Need More Butter and Responsibility

Tue, 07 Sep 2021 15:07:22 +0000

In this episode, I provide some personal lessons I've learned during the gap since the last episode and we look at the first half of Chapter One of Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety. We discuss the ethical relationship between the individual human and the history of the human race. As far as we are, or should be, concerned, where does guilt reside, how is it passed through generations, and what is the individual's ethical task? Does shame have any positive value? Practically speaking, why does the individual's relation to guilt matter? 03 - The Concept of Anxiety, Introduction

Wed, 14 Jul 2021 19:50:10 +0000

In this episode, we look at the introduction to Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety and discuss the importance of making sure we're bringing the right tools to bear on the project at hand. Additionally, and on a related note, we discuss the difference between authenticity and ideological possession. We all have perspectives, but are we using them as tools to rightly engage with the world or are we attempting to bring world in submission to our tools?
