Why does everybody seem to read the Bible as either literally true or entirely false? Does nobody else think Jesus was an extraordinary man whose life was mythologised by people trying to spread his valuable message?

My answer:

I take the Bible to be words of God and Jesus to be God the Son second in the Trinity but there are some people with those beliefs which you state Thomas Jefferson had that belief ,he wrote what is known as the Jefferson Bible by cutting out the miracles from the life of Jesus in the Gospels . He call this book Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth

We also see in the earliest copy of Josephus Who was born around 30 AD and in 100AD, whose parents might of seen the miracles of Jesus, he states about Jesus

Antiquities.18.3.3 (“ (63) Now, there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works--a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. And for something to be mythologised about Jesus it would be very difficult in such a short span which the New Testament was written for there would of been many people who was alive during Jesus and Apostles life span that could of testified against it.

On Josephus, it’s likely he never mentioned Jesus at all. I forget all the details, but I’ve been well-convinced by scholars his section on Jesus was added later.

The only reason why some scholars believe it was added because the early church fathers qouted Josephus as a source but the earliest manuscripts of Josephus states the phrase I qouted on him. Josephus else where mentions James The brother of Jesus being killed and states he was the brother of Christ.

Antiquities.20.9.1 (“ (200) when, therefore, Ananus was of this disposition, he thought he had now a proper opportunity [TO EXERCISE HIS AUTHORITY]. Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others, [OR, SOME OF HIS COMPANIONS]; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned;”)

So in the way he mentioned James shows that before hand he had mentioned Jesus previously and spoke about him as to mention James as Jesus brother..

Yes they can. We have testimonies of those who have. James Bartley (1870–1909) in February, 1891, some two hundred miles east of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic was swallowed by a sperm whale and was in the Sperm whale for 36 hours and survive. He was found still living almost two days later in the stomach of the whale, which was dead from harpooning.

Deacon Chronicle In April 5 , 2016 states of Luigi Marquez a Spanish fisherman was in a whale for 3 days before being "flushed out" alive.

Other testimony of one who was in a whale is that of a Lobster diver named Michael Packàrd who on June 11, 2021 the ocean off the coast of Cape Cod was in the mouth of a Humpback Whale for 30 or 40 seconds before he was spit out.

A similar incident occurred off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 2019 when a Bryde’s whale scooped up a Rainer Schimpf a marine conservationist while documenting sardine run of mass migration. He was in the whale only 2 seconds before the whale let him free.

Also we have to look at the way the Hebrews saw day and night besides from evening to evening to them any part of the day would count as a would count as a whole day and the same in reference to the night .

He could of easily made a special fish who had oxygen inside so Jonah could survive. Among those that could of swallowed Jonah whole could of been the following Great White Shark, a whale Shark, Grouper, sperm whale and there are others.

How many of these Clergymen actually care for their congregations to provide for them each day what they need and they get a month. Yet God who provides for all both Good people and Evil people gets a day which is known more for the turkey than for God. Living in a Spanish home before coming to Christ, I remember them in the house not calling it Thanksgiving Day but Turkey day. And prayer was never mentioned since the thought was on the turkey rather than God and his goodness. Which the first Thanksgiving which was in June instead of November was for thanking God for his goodness and favour.

First Thanksgiving Proclamation ( June 20, 1676) which was proclaim by Edward Rawson

Then later on by George Washington it was to be changed to the month November. But the point of the matter was it was a day set to thank God for his goodness. For God is good even the Psalmist points that out time and time again.

In Psalms 34:8 we are told taste and see that the Lord is good. So we can see by the things around us and we can savor as if it was food is goodness which is all around us.

I remember a pastor from a church called Tabernacle of Love telling me when my wife was dieing of cancer that she would of been well if I didn't lack faith , that I was the reason why my wife was still with cancer. This also happened in one occasion when my grandma was dieing of cancer she was told by a lady from her pentecostal church she wasn't healed because she lacked faith. For God to perform a healing ones faith is not needed. These churches sees miracles and healings as a product of man and not God. Ultimately God is not sovereign in their minds but man is . Be honest with you I prayed for people who I thought would never be healed and they were healed like a man with AIDS who after the prayer brought me a documented report that he was Healed with no signs of it. and I prayed for people who I believe with all my heart was to be healed and they died a few days later. God is sovereign not us.

Many years ago I was in a church service and the Lord was showing me a lady who was in a wheelchair and had no legs moreover in the vision saw myself praying for her and I saw her with legs walking. The name of the church was called El Refugio at the time. So in the middle of the service I pray for her. But nothing happened. I prayed for her to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. She received the Holy Spirit. But I prayed for her to receive legs till I couldn't speak anymore. And nothing happened. Then I said to her receive your legs by faith. I was greatly disappointed. After 3 days she came to the church walking. And she had received her legs but it wasn't like I imagine they were wooden legs and not of flesh. Finally she was approved by her medicare card to receive her wooden legs by mail. She was seeking approval for more than 2 years when I prayed for her the Lord open that door. The prayer was answered but not the way I wanted it. Sometimes healing can come not by the ways we imagine.

How much faith did Lazarus exhibit to be raised from the dead or how much faith did Jarius daughter exhibited? None for both them was dead.

Before we continue I would like to address a Question. Is it God's will to heal everyone? No it is not. There was even a occasion where Jesus only healed one person from a multitude who needed to be healed in John 5.

John 5:1-9 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.

Elisha died of a illness

2 Kings 13:14 Elisha had become sick with the illness of which he would die. Then Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over his face, and said, “O my father, my father, the chariots of Israel and their horsemen!”

Did that illness mean he wasn't anointed or he lacked faith ? No for we see that even after he had died his anointing was so strong it raised the dead to life.

2 Kings 13:20-21 Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

Just because you are sick doesn't mean you can't be used by God to pray for a sick person and see that person healed. The power of the anointing doesn't come from you but God The Holy Spirit who dwells in you.

Timothy had a stomach illness , and was told by Paul to drink wine with water because of that illness.

1 Timothy 5:23 ]No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.

There are some occasions where God would have us use medical means for our Healings as we see in the case of Hezekiah.

Isaiah 38:4-5,21
And the word of the Lord came to Isaiah, saying, “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will add to your days fifteen years.
Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a lump of figs, and apply it as a poultice on the boil, and he shall recover.”

It is not a sin to see a doctor but it is a sin not to seek God first in prayer who gave wisdom to the doctor.

2 Chronicles 16:12 And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.

And we see Luke who stood a physician even after he saw the gifts of healings clearly played out before his eyes.

Colossians 4:14 Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.

Paul had a illness which he wasn't healed from. He even prayed to God to get rid of it.

2 Corinthians 12:7-9
And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Some say it was problems with his eye sight. Which we are hinted at in his Epistle to the Galatians.

Galatians 4:13
You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first.

Galatians 4:15 What then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.

Galatians 6:11 See with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand!

So if God's will was to heal everyone Paul would of been healed , Timothy would of been healed , Luke would of not stood as a physician.

Now was the Gifts of Healings a gift that was to leave the church after the apostolic age? And the Answer is No. We read the following in Mark 16:17-18

Mark 16:17-18
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Notice :

"And these signs will follow those who believe "
Are there still believers in our time yes there are. But some might state oh this passage doesn't belong in the Gospel of Mark but was added much later. They say that because it is missing in Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus but nearly all other manuscripts have them. Which by the way includes

EVIDENCE: A C 2 D(supp) K ,W ,X ,Theta, Pi, f 1, f 13, 28, 33 ,565 ,700, 892, 1010, 1241, Byz, Lect, most lat vg , syr(c,p,h,pal)

Now in that sermon by John Macarthur which he preached he mocks us who believes in these verses for us now by stating:

"Now, if today we are to assume that anyone still has all of this that is meant for then, then we must find ourselves agreeing with the Appalachian snake handlers and with those who would perhaps from the Church of the Firstborn, it’s called, drink poison and so forth and so on. It doesn’t work like they want it to work very often. "

As Christians we don't put God to the test. Or tempt him as other translation states.

I remember a pastor from a church called Tabernacle of Love telling me when my wife was dieing of cancer that she would of been well if I didn't lack faith , that I was the reason why my wife was still with cancer. This also happened in one occasion when my grandma was dieing of cancer she was told by a lady from her pentecostal church she wasn't healed because she lacked faith. For God to perform a healing ones faith is not needed. These churches sees miracles and healings as a product of man and not God. Ultimately God is not sovereign in their minds but man is . Be honest with you I prayed for people who I thought would never be healed and they were healed like a man with AIDS who after the prayer brought me a documented report that he was Healed with no signs of it. and I prayed for people who I believe with all my heart was to be healed and they died a few days later. God is sovereign not us.

Elkanah had problems among his wives getting along. For one made fun of the other for not being able to give birth.

1 Samuel 1:1-2,4-8 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb. And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb.So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

And in the New Testament Jesus narrows down marriage to one man and one woman.

Matthew 19:4-6
And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’
and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

And Bishops are told to be the husband of only one wife .

1 Timothy 3:1-2
This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;

Which by the way , how is a bishop to lead not by commanding as a king would do to his peasants but as an example to others which means them being the Husband of one wife should lead to others to do the same.

1 Peter 5:1-3
The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;

Jesus is said to have only one bride who is the church not multiple.

Revelation 21:9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”

Even among Rabbis the topic of polygamy was rejected among them because none of the ones who is named in Talmud had polygamous relationships and by the 4th and 5th Century it was spoken against.

Rabbi Gershom ben Yehuda banned the practice completely for Ashkenazi Jews in the 10th century.

One who loves his wife as he loves himself, and who esteems her by giving her clothing and jewelry more than he esteems himself, ....... Concerning him the verse states: “And you shall know that your tent is in peace; and you shall visit your habitation and shall miss nothing”

Look at what this passage states to love your wife as you love yourself, you can't be loving a person in that matter if you are loving more than one.

This reminds me of what Paul states in Ephesians and again we are told that the two will be one flesh.

As I was about to ask a pastor to have church service in his church for Saturdays I was struck with something I saw on the wall in big letters we hold the Stations of the Cross along with other Christians by which we could unite with the Roman Catholic Church. On seeing that I said I am not going to deal with this church. I don't bow down to Rome. so I decided to write on this topic and I'm also doing a podcast on this topic tonight.

The Bible gives us warnings not to add or take away from the word of God.

Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.

Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. I Am Coming Quickly

The Stations of the cross was invented between the years 1676–1751 by the Franciscan of the Riformella also known as the Convent of San Bonaventura in Italy. Originally there where more than 570 Stations erected by Leonard of Port Maurice but the church of Rome settled with 14. Now let's look at each one them to see if they have any Biblical Bases.

The series of stations is as follows: (1) Jesus is condemned to death, (2) he is made to bear his cross, (3) he falls the first time, (4) he meets his mother, (5) Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross, (6) Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, (7) he falls the second time, (8) the women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus, (9) he falls the third time, (10) he is stripped of his garments, (11) he is nailed to the cross, (12) he dies on the cross, (13) he is taken down from the cross, and (14) he is placed in the sepulchre.

Numbers 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 are not backup by the scripture

Number 4 assumes a meeting with Mary before getting to the cross which the scripture does not hint at that idea

Number 6 mentions a name of a woman which is not mentioned in the Bible Old or New Testament. Veronica placing a cloth to Jesus face and attaining Jesus image in it.

This so called cloth they say is now housed in the Monastery of the Holy Face (Monasterio de la Santa Faz), on the outskirts of Alicante, in a chapel built in 1611 and decorated between 1677 and 1680 by the sculptor José Vilanova, the gilder Pere Joan Valero and the painter Juan Conchillos.

Number 3, 7, 9 speaks of Jesus falling three times while carrying the cross. The Bible doesn't say he fell or didn't fall that is assumed. We are about to look at the records from his condemnation to the crucifixion .

Let's examine Matthew record first:

Matthew 27:31-35
And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.
And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”

By reading Matthew alone one sees no evidence of the following Stations 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 mentioned or backed in scripture. Now let's see the Gospel of Mark .

Mark 15:15-25 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. The Soldiers Mock Jesus.Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take. Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

Now again do we see any evidence of Jesus falling three times, a meeting with Mary, a Veronica holding a cloth with the face of Jesus? No we don't. Now let's look at Luke's gospel.

Luke 23:25-33
And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will. Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.

It is interesting we see evidence for station 8 woman of Jerusalem weeping for Jesus but not station 7 and 9 or 3, 4, 6 . Veronica Is still not mentioned in Scripture. Because such a woman never existed. We don't see a meeting between Jesus and his mother before getting to the cross and we don't definitely see Jesus falling three times on his way to the cross. Now let's go to the Gospel of John to see if he would fill these blanks.

John 19:16-18 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led Him away. And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.

Again like the other Gospels there is no mention of Jesus falling three times, a meeting with Mary on the way to the cross, and Veronica where are you but she is nowhere to be found. As I was about to ask a pastor to have church service in his church for Saturdays I was struck with something I saw on the wall in big letters we hold the Stations of the Cross along with other Christians by which we could unite with the Roman Catholic Church. On seeing that I said I am not going to deal with this church. I don't bow down to Rome. so I decided to write on this topic and I'm also doing a podcast on this topic tonight.

The Bible gives us warnings not to add or take away from the word of God.

Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.

Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. I Am Coming Quickly

The Stations of the cross was invented between the years 1676–1751 by the Franciscan of the Riformella also known as the Convent of San Bonaventura in Italy. Originally there where more than 570 Stations erected by Leonard of Port Maurice but the church of Rome settled with 14. Now let's look at each one them to see if they have any Biblical Bases.

The series of stations is as follows: (1) Jesus is condemned to death, (2) he is made to bear his cross, (3) he falls the first time, (4) he meets his mother, (5) Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross, (6) Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, (7) he falls the second time, (8) the women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus, (9) he falls the third time, (10) he is stripped of his garments, (11) he is nailed to the cross, (12) he dies on the cross, (13) he is taken down from the cross, and (14) he is placed in the sepulchre.

Numbers 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 are not backup by the scripture

Number 4 assumes a meeting with Mary before getting to the cross which the scripture does not hint at that idea

Number 6 mentions a name of a woman which is not mentioned in the Bible Old or New Testament. Veronica placing a cloth to Jesus face and attaining Jesus image in it.

This so called cloth they say is now housed in the Monastery of the Holy Face (Monasterio de la Santa Faz), on the outskirts of Alicante, in a chapel built in 1611 and decorated between 1677 and 1680 by the sculptor José Vilanova, the gilder Pere Joan Valero and the painter Juan Conchillos.

Number 3, 7, 9 speaks of Jesus falling three times while carrying the cross. The Bible doesn't say he fell or didn't fall that is assumed. We are about to look at the records from his condemnation to the crucifixion .

Let's examine Matthew record first:

Matthew 27:31-35
And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.
And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”

By reading Matthew alone one sees no evidence of the following Stations 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 mentioned or backed in scripture. Now let's see the Gospel of Mark .
