In my memory of it, a boy moved into a haunted house and fell in love with the ghost of a little girl who I think was trapped in a china doll? Also, I got to sit next to a boy I had a terrible crush on and the whole thing was just very romantic."

Chia was… not very right at all about the plot of this one. But don't worry, we spend almost as long as the length of the film explaining what she missed!

Here's Gwynne's summary of Zoom:

"ZOOM was a 1970s kids show on public television that was produced in Boston. A group of kids sang songs, performed skits, (I think) showed the audience how to make crafts etc., read letters that kids sent in, and (I think) had "rap sessions" about various topics. There were also documentary segments about other kids. (I remember one segment about a girl who broke her arm, had to get a cast, etc.) The cast changed from season to season; I think kids could only stay for a season or two. My favorite cast member was Bernadette, who did a trick with her arms that I can do to this day. The show also featured a language called Ubbi Dubbi, in which you add "ub" before every vowel. If you sent a SASE to the show, they would send you ZOOM cards (each card featured a cast member on one side and some ZOOM-related activity on the other side). I used to own a bunch of these. There was also a ZOOM book and an LP. I'm not sure how many times I wrote to the show before they read my letter on the air. It was definitely a memorable event in my young life, to the point that I remembered which cast member (Shawn) read my letter!

Julia's sister Kat joins us to talk about a weird Christian movie that she watched in school and later begged her mom to buy for her: The Buttercream Gang. There's so much to discuss about this movie that we had to break the show into two parts. This clip contains one of the montages we discuss in depth, including the part where teens pull small children off a see-saw and start using it themselves. Here's Kat's hazy summary:

My hazy blur at the moment is some kind of white boy soul redemption. Maybe there were bikes and a tree? And autumn was in there too. Pretty sure there were fallen leaves in the woods. My school had some weird program in which we watched the movie and then could buy it. I have no idea why that was a program for a lot of reasons. I was definitely peddled the white Christian savior message. Only a few years later I moved on to watching Welcome To the Dollhouse on repeat. Big leap 

Basically Kat had forgotten the entire plot…Anyway, one of the weird things about this one is it is supposed to be set in Illinois, but it was filmed in Utah, which looks nothing like Illinois. However, Utah is also where Troll 2 was filmed! Which led us to have some questions about the possible supernatural underpinnings of this … odd … small town. Julia's sister Kat joins us to talk about a weird Christian movie that she watched in school and later begged her mom to buy for her: The Buttercream Gang. There's so much to discuss about this movie that we had to break the show into two parts. My hazy blur at the moment is some kind of white boy soul redemption. Maybe there were bikes and a tree? And autumn was in there too. Pretty sure there were fallen leaves in the woods. My school had some weird program in which we watched the movie and then could buy it. I have no idea why that was a program for a lot of reasons. I was definitely peddled the white Christian savior message. Only a few years later I moved on to watching Welcome To the Dollhouse on repeat. Big leap 

Basically Kat had forgotten the entire plot…Anyway, one of the weird things about this one is it is supposed to be set in Illinois, but it was filmed in Utah, which looks nothing like Illinois. However, Utah is also where Troll 2 was filmed! Which led us to have some questions about the possible supernatural underpinnings of this … odd … small town. We watched a three minute … influencer video… we think??? This showed us what there was to do in Dinosaur World. Amma's experience was different in that she and her friends kidnapped one of her friends, blindfolded him, and drove him to Dinosaur World, where they played the Jurassic Park theme on an iPod, just out loud. Also they were wearing T-rex visors.

If this single anecdote doesn't make you want to be BFFs with Amma, we have no idea what will.

Of course since this was a Magical World of Disney movie, we had to watch the Michael Eisner intro. We also talked about the last time we watched one of these, which was when we watched The Richest Cat in the World, which was our very first for paid subscribers only episode.

Because this movie was a Disney movie about alien encounters, it was only natural that we also watch some things about a Disney World that attraction that scared younger Amma: ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. The first thing we found was actually a clip from a Disney Channel show called Walt Disney World Inside Out (but we didn't realize that at all during the day of the recording and we were mystified by it). We wondered a lot about this mysterious "Scott" doing Serious Theme Park Journalism. Well, we found him, and it turns out now he's a documentary filmmaker and Bigfoot enthusiast whose trail name is Squatch. And this right here is why we do research. Because you just never know how odd a thing is going to be! Were you interviewed by Scott at Disney World in the mid-nineties? Let us know!

Eventually we did find the official trailer for the attraction, which was very short and terrified a younger Amma. This attraction was later changed to a Lilo and Stitch theme and renamed Stitch's Great Escape. Now it is on a "seasonal schedule" which means it is basically permanently closed. We had a little discussion about Stitch and the case for nature vs. nurture, and Julia brought up Alien Resurrection as an instance of nurture winning over nature because of a xenomorph not killing Sigourney Weaver because it imprinted on her as its mother. This is not exactly what happened in that movie, but Julia's example really was from Alien Resurrection and not Alien 3 as Geoffrey wondered. … Not that Alien Resurrection is really a proponent of nurture over nature, though. That's pretty much all Lilo and Stitch's domain.

Geoffrey also brought up the documentary currently in production: Life After the Navigator. This is not out yet, but we will 100% be watching it when it is!

However, a thing that IS out right now is the music video for "Flight of the Navigator", a song by Childish Gambino, which was pretty depressing. We decided to end the commercial break by picking up the mood with a commercial Amma quotes every time she knows she's going on another Disney World vacation.And then Amma told us about how Barack Obama is a fan of the strawberry milkshakes the Parkesdale Market near Dinosaur World. So that's something we should all try sometime.

Here's Amma's to start:

"There are puppets or animatrons or something in this, that I know. I remember being freaked out that a kid is in a coma of sorts, and the rest of the world keeps going on around him. Maybe he went to space in that time? Maybe he thought he did? Either way, I'm pretty sure he goes back to space with the puppets/animatrons."

Here's how Geoffrey remembered it:

"It's the 1960s (the clean innocent part, not the drugs-war-sex part) and off-brand Elliot from ET is on vacation maybe with family and has a crush on a girl.  Then things happen and he's in the 1980's. He disappeared or was asleep? Anyway, he's at a NASA lab now and learning about Twisted Sister (doesn't like them) and the government's experimenting on him.  They also have a UFO. He sneaks off onto the UFO, and it turns out that the ship has a friendly wacky dentist lamp robot who runs it and goes around collecting things, including cute goo monsters. Not-Elliot for some reason has the navigation data the ship needs, so they go on a fun journey and turn the ship invisible and make it longer and more streamlined for advanced flight, and then go back in time so alter-Elliot can get killed in Vietnam or something and maybe almost he thinks it was all a dream except he still has a cute goo monster pet now?"

And finally, Julia's take:

"There's a boy who goes on a really cool spaceship when he's twelve in … I think the 70s because his mom drinks TAB?? and then several years pass on earth but for him it's really quick. When he gets back home, he's actually been missing and the entire world has changed. His little sister is now his big sister. His family is traumatized from having a missing child, and no one can explain why he didn't age, but they try to assimilate him back into their lives. There's also New Coke, which is a big deal. Eventually he goes back on the spaceship to have another adventure and try to go back in time so he won't actually have gone missing. I think it works? Also I think there are fireworks at one point? And I think the sister is a SUPER COOL eighties teen in the future part."

We were fascinated to see how all of us took away different things from this one! And we were all right! And also, all wrong! Nobody was in a coma, the kid was never on vacation and definitely never thinks it was all a dream, there's no TAB at all, and New Coke was mentioned literally once as part of a list of Coke options. Julia was also conflating the main character's little brother (who is a big brother in the future part) with a random intern at NASA played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But to be fair, Sarah Jessica Parker was a SUPER COOL eighties teen in this movie.

We talk about a bunch of stuff with this one, including whether this movie is more like Captain EO or Star Tours (or maybe… Soarin'???), and about how great an idea it is to use a 12-year-old as a USB drive despite the fact that the idea that we only use 10% of our brains is not true at all. Geoffrey also revealed that the dad used to be in a psychedelic band called Clear Light. After we got through our usual questions, we had a little verisimilitude Q&A with Amma about the realism of this movie's portrayal of Florida and NASA. Because if you have the chance to interrogate a Florida native who went to space camp, you don't wanna waste it!

"There's a boy who goes on a really cool spaceship when he's twelve in … I think the 70s because his mom drinks TAB?? and then several years pass on earth but for him it's really quick. When he gets back home, he's actually been missing and the entire world has changed. His little sister is now his big sister. His family is traumatized from having a missing child, and no one can explain why he didn't age, but they try to assimilate him back into their lives. There's also New Coke, which is a big deal. Eventually he goes back on the spaceship to have another adventure and try to go back in time so he won't actually have gone missing. I think it works? Also I think there are fireworks at one point? And I think the sister is a SUPER COOL eighties teen in the future part."

We were fascinated to see how all of us took away different things from this one! And we were all right! And also, all wrong! Nobody was in a coma, the kid was never on vacation and definitely never thinks it was all a dream, there's no TAB at all, and New Coke was mentioned literally once as part of a list of Coke options. Julia was also conflating the main character's little brother (who is a big brother in the future part) with a random intern at NASA played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But to be fair, Sarah Jessica Parker was a SUPER COOL eighties teen in this movie.

We talk about a bunch of stuff with this one, including whether this movie is more like Captain EO or Star Tours (or maybe… Soarin'???), and about how great an idea it is to use a 12-year-old as a USB drive despite the fact that the idea that we only use 10% of our brains is not true at all. Geoffrey also revealed that the dad used to be in a psychedelic band called Clear Light. After we got through our usual questions, we had a little verisimilitude Q&A with Amma about the realism of this movie's portrayal of Florida and NASA. Because if you have the chance to interrogate a Florida native who went to space camp, you don't wanna waste it!

This reached number 53 on the UK pop charts. After that, we checked out Sally Ann Marsh's newer music video, "Alien Hive Theme" by Brand Violet. This one got us into some interesting territory with regard to contract law and… butt stuff? Yeah, don't listen to this one with kids or at work. Though honestly, that's probably true most of the time of this podcast.

Then we moved on to the video store talk, and Max revealed that he'd once found Fritz the Cat (the first X-rated animated film) shelved next to Feivel Goes West in the children's section.

Of course, half of the kids are dressed in appropriative Native American costumes, which is a shame, but also ever pervasive. As Native visual artist Valerie Reynoso pointed out in an article about costumes, "…appropriation trivializes the brutal history of colonization of the Americas and its legacy today ... [and] sustains the Western idea that Native attire is only acceptable when worn by a white person and when viewed under a colonial gaze."

Anyway, this commercial was basically a bunch of cartoon Peanuts characters singing a Thanksgiving song … which Geoffrey actually knew! Geoffrey called it "Harvest Home" though "Come Ye Thankful People, Come" may be the actual title. Julia had no idea this song was a thing. But this did lead Julia to reminisce about a song from a middle school winter concert called "Feast of Lights"

This then led to Julia and Geoffrey arguing about whether "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is a gorgeous song (Julia) or just the worst (Geoffrey). Who do you stand with on this, the most important issue of 2019?

Okay, so to say we were not prepared for what we were going to see in this one is a major understatement. Here's Geoffrey's hazy summary:

"Did Garfield go to the farm from Green Acres? Or was there an old lady who died at the end?"

No. Green Acres is a totally different show that has nothing to do with Garfield. He did have friends on US Acres in the Saturday morning cartoon version, but that doesn't appear in this Thanksgiving special. And there is an old lady, but she does not die. What does happen? Basically a lot of really unfortunate toxic masculinity and harassment and dysfunctional relationship stuff. And also some weird fat shaming and bad cat diet advice. This one was rough. We honestly both remembered loving Garfield as kids, and by the time we'd finished watching this, we felt our souls had been rather crushed. However, the voice of Garfield, Lorenzo Music, was apparently a really nice guy.

Thanksgiving is a complicated holiday, too. We were both definitely raised with the happy pilgrims and Native Americans story, and while there was apparently a 3 day feast in 1621 (as John mentions while stalling for time so someone else can do the work he failed to do properly), that's not really a reflection of how European colonists interacted with the native population as a whole. Many Native Americans today think of Thanksgiving as a day for solemn remembrance. If you want to think about what a more compassionate celebration of Thanksgiving looks like, consider quote by Sean Sherman, a Lakota chef, who offers that instead of fixating on allegedly happy narratives that erase centuries of suffering, "… we can focus simply on values that apply to everybody: togetherness, generosity and gratitude."

That's definitely a better way to spend the day than harassing a veterinarian into dating you and then making your grandmother secretly cook the meal at the last minute and then leave so that you can take credit for cooking while your grandmother is exiled from the Thanksgiving feast!

Anyway, happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it! We hope you take some time to enjoy food you like with people you love, and that you also take a moment to reflect on the actual history of Native Americans who were living in what is now the United States before European colonists arrived. In our area, that includes the Massachusett and Wampanoag tribes.

We also, as promised, watched the "Girls of Rock and Roll" scene from Malibu Bikini Shop, a movie we would DEFINITELY NOT show to a child. We talk about many of the things that make this scene disturbing, including the bit where a child excitedly asks for a super sexualized bikini. Anyway, after that, we felt like we needed something to restore our faith in humanity, so we watched a charming video of some people in Colorado doing their own homage to the Chipmunks and Chipettes version of the song. From the choreography to the costumes, this group nailed it! Also, the chipmunk costumes definitely look like turtleneck druid robes, and Geoffrey really wants to see a D&D player character or monster guide for a Chipmunk character. Who will make this? And of course we did also watch some actual commercials, too. We started with a Chipmunks VHS box set commercial, including such classics as Batmunk and Funny We Shrunk the Adults. Has anyone ever seen these? Julia kind of wants to…

Namely Chipmunk Punk and The Chipmunks 35th Birthday Party, which alerted us to the fact that a Chipmunks version of Achy Breaky Heart exists. This made Julia and Geoffrey wish for a Chipmunks version of "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus. And… good news, everyone! Clearly we were not the only people who wished for this. The music in this movie is written by a bunch of talented songwriters, including Terry Shaddick, who wrote "Physical" (popularized by Olivia Newton John), Donna Weiss, who co-wrote "Bette Davis Eyes" along with Kim Carnes, Randy Goodrum, who wrote a bunch of hit songs, and Barry De Vorzon, who wrote a song for a different movie that later became a top hit as "Nadia's Theme" after it was used as a background for a montage of gymnast Nadia Comaneci's performances in a recap of the 1976 Olympics. The song was also used as the theme for The Young and the Restless.

Of course The Chipmunk Adventure also included songs originally written by the Chipmunks' creator, Ross Bagdasarian, father of the current Chipmunks IP owner (and successor as the voice of Dave, Alvin, and Simon). Fun Fact: he named his alter ego David Seville because he was stationed in Seville, Spain during World War II.

We also talk a bit about the egregiously racist stuff in this one, from the really horrible lecherous child sheikh and hostile jungle natives scenes to the Mexican festival with a Carmen Miranda number. Carmen Miranda was Brazilian and felt frustrated with the way she wasn't allowed to break out of a specific stereotype of "Latin culture" in her career. She's beloved and credited with paving the way for popular tropicalia artists of the 1960s, but it's complicated, and none of that is something The Chipmunk Adventure acknowledges or engages with when using one of her songs for a scene in a country that is definitely not Brazil. And then also we can't forget the sombrero shaped Taco Bell kind of establishment plopped in the middle of Mexico city, which Julia thought would fit right in at South of the Border, a roadside attraction in South Carolina with its own complicated race-related history.

Of course The Chipmunk Adventure also included songs originally written by the Chipmunks' creator, Ross Bagdasarian, father of the current Chipmunks IP owner (and successor as the voice of Dave, Alvin, and Simon). Fun Fact: he named his alter ego David Seville because he was stationed in Seville, Spain during World War II.

We also talk a bit about the egregiously racist stuff in this one, from the really horrible lecherous child sheikh and hostile jungle natives scenes to the Mexican festival with a Carmen Miranda number. Carmen Miranda was Brazilian and felt frustrated with the way she wasn't allowed to break out of a specific stereotype of "Latin culture" in her career. She's beloved and credited with paving the way for popular tropicalia artists of the 1960s, but it's complicated, and none of that is something The Chipmunk Adventure acknowledges or engages with when using one of her songs for a scene in a country that is definitely not Brazil. And then also we can't forget the sombrero shaped Taco Bell kind of establishment plopped in the middle of Mexico city, which Julia thought would fit right in at South of the Border, a roadside attraction in South Carolina with its own complicated race-related history.

Here's Tori's summary:

"There is a group of kids and something scary happens and one of them has all his hair fall out from fright, like happens in scary stories. They find this recipe for "The Peanut Butter Solution" that's supposed to regrow hair and they put it on his head. His hair starts growing super super fast, like overnight it's super long fast. He winds up getting kidnapped by an evil artist who keeps him asleep and uses his hair to make magic paint brushes, and I think maybe there are also kidnapped children making the paintbrushes? The friends have to find him, thwart the evil artist, and make it so his hair goes back to growing like a normal person."

This is all true, and yet leaves out a bunch of the more bewildering pieces of this movie's plot. One really notable thing that's cool, though, is that The Peanut Butter Solution featured the first songs that Celine Dion wrote and performed in English. She was only 16 at the time!

"Listen to the Magic Man" (aka "Dans la Main d'un Magicien") -- Honestly, this song is better in French, if only for the French pronunciation of Abracadabra, but it's still impressive either way. And "Michael's Song" (aka "La Ballade de Michel").

This gets one plot thread pretty closely, but completely leaves out another major one! Listen to find out what this movie is actually about. Also, fair warning: this episode is more sad and serious than usual. We talk about the supposed Poltergeist Curse, which is really just a bunch of sad deaths of cast members. One by domestic violence, and three by illness.

We also talk in more serious than funny ways about cinematic representation of minorities since this movie has both a little person and a Native American in the cast.

Zelda Rubinstein reprised her role as Tangina the psychic in this movie, but her character was mostly extraneous for some reason, despite being crucial to the first movie. Regardless, Zelda Rubinstein herself was an awesome activist who championed rights for little people, and was on the front wave of AIDS awareness. Zelda Rubinstein did this because someone she loved died of AIDS and she felt very strongly that gay men needed to be warned that it was a danger and that they needed to practice safe sex. She did it even though at the time AIDS was a taboo subject and advocating for gay mens' health did have a negative impact on her career. She was present for the very first L.A. AIDS walk, and was an activist for this cause even before Elizabeth Taylor and Madonna. What a hero!

Will Sampson was a Native American Muscogee (Creek) actor who played the part of Taylor in this movie. He was also an activist who spent his influence on advocating for better Native American representation in movies.

The Sampson Brothers are Will Sampson's sons, musicians and dancers who perform with a Lakota hip hop artist. They're also activists and promote a message of healing cultural trauma for Native peoples. Also, they do really cool dances with hoops.

We also talked about Marlon Brando declining his Oscar for The Godfather in 1973 and sending Sacheen Littlefeather (an Apache woman) to represent him at the ceremony. She gave a short and very composed speech (even despite being interrupted by booing!), in which she explained that Brando was refusing his award because of how Native Americans are treated in the film industry, and because of the events at Wounded Knee. Brando sent a much longer speech, which Littlefeather didn't read because the officials at the ceremony said she could only have 60 seconds. John Wayne had to be physically restrained from pulling her off stage, and this speech tanked her acting career entirely.

We also talk about the special effects and how Julia was scarred by the tequila scene as a kid.
