Today there are global rules that determine how those prisoners should be treated, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the conditions POWs are held in are far from comfortable. Even in the 1800s, the governments of North America agreed that prisoners should be treated humanely, meaning they would be protected from violence or unjust execution. Those objects are constantly used and have a purpose that makes them helpful to the people around them. Other inanimate objects are much more lonely. Something like the mailbox at an abandoned home, watching the mailman show up every day and drive right by, wishing that one day there would be some mail for them. Either way, the inanimate objects that we interact with shouldn’t affect us any longer once we put them down. Sometimes though, the things we touch have a way of holding on.
