Speaking about having a joyful life... Bracha dropped a golden nugget for life during our session. She told me what the secret to happiness is. And since you're part of this community, you get to learn about it too.

I can go on and on about this. But what you need to know is that gratitude is really an exercise in mindfulness. North American society tends to focus on all the things we don't have instead of all the things we do have. And that is why depression and anxiety are on the rise. The idea of Jazz for Peace began when DellaRatta realized through his travels that music is an important part of solving problems. Music has a knack of being able to cut through barriers. Rick also shared that he was an eyewitness to the 9/11 attacks in America, and that in that time he wrote a poem that has he has held on to as a mission statement. Rick strives to meet the expectations of his statement every day, Below is a powerful quote from his poem:

"The gift of giving is our greatest privilege. I hear jazz for peace."

DellaRatta believes that music is a stimulant of intellect -I'd say rightfully so. He believes that children should be exposed to all forms of music, and that they should have a chance to pick and learn an instrument. "I saw the system not serving the students." Carrie noted that even private schools promised to focus on the students when often, that was not truly the case.



And then of course, we dove into the topic of unschooling and what it means, particularly its' difference from homeschooling. Carrie explained that with unschooling, she does not do sit-down lessons or follow a certain curriculum. This type of education completely follows the child's interests. Learning experiences are on the child's terms and learning happens naturally.



As a teacher and mother, Carrie reminds parents to never treat their child's hobby as a waste of time. "All of their interests are valid."



As parents, teachers, and caregivers, we should never underestimate the power of the curious wonder with which children view the world.
